Cuban missile crisis, that was very scary.

Oddly we were talking about that today in reference to the Corona virus. I clearly recall going to school, I was about 15, on the day of the ultimatum, the US had told Russia that unless their ships carrying missiles to Cuba they, the US, would take retaliatory action, probably a nuclear strike. There was a very real fear that it could be our last day on earth yet no parents even considered not sending their children to school!

Israel - Lebanon conflict and Lebanese civil war.

Was a big Smurfs' fan and thought that they were talking about Azrael, Gargamel's cat.

I remember the SAS storming the Iranian Embassy. It was filmed live if I remember correctly which is very bizzare. I was about 11ish. I also remember the Yorkshire Ripper killing women. My mum had to walk home down a snicket after work and I remember her being scared.

Russia invading Afganistan.

God yes... I recall that too. I remember my mum crying. But we still had to go to school. The teachers were petrified and we were on edge all day. We hugged each other a lot.

*Nixon ... there will be no whitewash in the whitehouse

I couldn't understand how the magician David Nixon could also be the POTUS....*

I remember Nixon resigning, and Gerald Ford being sworn in as president. Of all random things to remember, I remember that the Supreme Court judge who swore him in was called Warren Earl Burger, and my friend and I thought that sounded more like a hamburger than a judge!

Freddy Mercury dying in 1991. When I was six..

Mammyloveswine · 26/09/2020 00:13

I had chicken pox aged 7 and there was a flesh eating bug reported on the 9 o. Clock news!

I remember me and my mam checking for symptoms!

Mammyloveswine · 26/09/2020 00:15

Proof I never made it up!

SaltyAndFresh · 26/09/2020 00:17

Great question. 1984 miners' strike (I know because I recall the name Arthur Scargill).

PastaPins · 26/09/2020 00:19

Sadam Hussein being a "bad man"

SaltyAndFresh · 26/09/2020 00:20

@BertieBotts

I'm surprised an 8yo would understand enough of the footage of 9/11 to be scared off watching the news. I was 13 when it happened but it didn't really affect me until 10 years later. I couldn't grasp the scale of it when I first saw it. It just seemed like any other bomb/plane crash/disaster.
My year 7 form were certainly affected by it.
Sweetpea84 · 26/09/2020 00:21

Freddie Mercury’s death

Mammyloveswine · 26/09/2020 00:29

@OhTheRoses

It annoys me tremendously when I hear about teachers taking their politics to work. It's wholly inappropriate.
But why? Politics massively affects teachers?
fairfat40 · 26/09/2020 00:31

The Jim Jones massacre. I was terrified by the adults forcing the children to drink the koolaid.

Nannyamc · 26/09/2020 00:39

June 1963 the death of Pope John..a few days later the pure joy of JFKs visit to Dublin and the style of Jackie O..the devastation at his death in november that year..I was 4 and have had a fascination at it all since.

Spudface75 · 26/09/2020 00:47

The murder of Yvonne Fletcher. I was too young to really understand what had happened and why, but I do remember it was the only time I ever heard my dad swear.

MrsJasonIsbell · 26/09/2020 00:54

Armenian earthquake, 1988

blueshoes · 26/09/2020 00:55

A panther on the loose. I did not know what a panther was. I was terrified as I thought it was the bogeyman.

40somethingJBJ · 26/09/2020 01:52

Charles and Diana’s wedding. I was 3 and remember watching it on tv at my grandma’s.

OverItAndTired · 26/09/2020 08:29

@Jocasta2018
I'm so sorry to hear that. Such a tragedy!

MrsZola · 26/09/2020 08:53

The Vietnam War.
