I think for me it was the 1999 champions league final

OP posts:
CeibaTree · 24/09/2020 21:37

Mine was the Gladbeck hostage crisis.

MamaGothel · 24/09/2020 21:45

The earliest I can remember was the murder of Victoria Climbiè. I was only 8 but it was local to us and the detail about the bath really stayed with me. I must have heard adults talking about it or watching the news. I think it was the first time I had heard of child abuse so very upsetting.

nildesparandum · 24/09/2020 21:45

The first news item that I can remember is the death King George VI, yes I am that old.
I was 8 years old and the radio, no telly then, kept announcing it and playing mournful funeral dirges all day.

Cupcakey · 24/09/2020 21:47

Lockerbie

Thneedville · 24/09/2020 21:49

Margaret Thatcher becoming pm. I was 5.

QueenofmyPrinces · 24/09/2020 21:52

Princess Diana’s death and the abduction/murder of Sarah Payne.

Timeandtune · 24/09/2020 21:55

I can remember Aberfan. The Moors Murderers and the Profumo scandal. Can’t remember any shoot news stories from my childhood.

Chickenwing · 24/09/2020 21:55

LemonDrizzles · 24/09/2020 21:56

El Al Flight 1862 crashing into residential tower blocks in Amsterdam in 1992 must be one of the first, I was 7

This.

I was a year than him, but I remember hearing about it and being really upset.

I also remember (because R4 was on all the time at home) a lot about the Sandinista rebels - around 1979/80 ish. No idea about any of it, but I liked the word.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 24/09/2020 22:04

@GarlicSoup

I watched Princess Anne marry Mark Phillips Grin
That’s mine too! I think I had started school in the September and they married in November. I’m convinced we had a day off school too.

Second memory is the stand pipes in the 1976 drought.

Third would be the death of Elvis in 1977.

Janleverton · 24/09/2020 22:05

@LemonDrizzles - snap with child caught down hole. Mine didn’t have a happy ending though. I’m still freaked out about that sort of thing - morbidly fascinated but repelled at same time.

Ding123 · 24/09/2020 22:05

Dunblane. I also remember going swimming with school the next day and my teacher and TA discussing it.

takethegirloutofwales · 24/09/2020 22:06

The first gulf war I think.

InMyOwnParticularIdiom · 24/09/2020 22:07

Fall of the Berlin Wall, Thatcher leaving Downing Street and images of the horrific conditions in Romanian orphanages following the end of communism. The last had by far the biggest impact on me, perhaps because I could empathise with the children trapped there.

All of these were in 1989/90, so I would have been about six or seven.

Nellodee · 24/09/2020 22:17

Elvis Presley dying.

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/09/2020 22:19

Berlin Wall coming down.

ChibiTotoro · 24/09/2020 22:20

The Aids crisis. The terrifying TV advert and Princess Diana meeting patients and shaking a man's hand.

BishopBrennansArse · 24/09/2020 22:21

Charles and Diana's wedding
Raising of the Mary Rose

MissDollyMix · 24/09/2020 22:23

I remember my parents making me watch the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was about 6. They just said “watch this! This is history in the making!” But I didn’t have a clue what was actually happening.

Itsnotalwaysme · 24/09/2020 22:23

Either princess Diana dying or the foot and mouth outbreak

Tartyflette · 24/09/2020 22:26

The first news story i remember hearing about as a child was the Profumo affair and asking my parents about it and not getting any answer (or one that made sense) . I think it was 1960.
They certainly didn't say the defence minister and a Russian embassy er, 'attaché' were sleeping with the same girl, who was only about 19 at the time (so still a minor) and who was basically being pimped out by a society doctor who was also treating Royalty....
I remember bring very puzzled as to why it was such a huge scandal and all over the papers, (which we got a week late as we lived abroad and didn't have British TV.)

TartanDMs · 24/09/2020 22:37

I just asked my younger sister and she said Bill Clinton not having sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky. She would have been 6 Shock

locketpol · 24/09/2020 22:37

Death of princess Dianna . I was playing on my typewriter and my mother told me to remember what I was doing at the time when this news was announced
