We drove past Lockerbie recently and I got more upset than I ever though I would. Strange how some things never leave you.

I was in my 30s when Jill Dando died but it stands out as the first big news story I heard via the Internet.

The execution of Ruth Ellis. I was a toddler and I didn't know what was going on but I remember my mother and grandmother and a couple of other women talking about what was happening. It was years later when I mentioned it to my mother and said what was going on and she told me. Don't know it that counts as I suppose I remembered their reaction not the story.

The first one where I really remember was the crisis in the Congo, I think it was 1959 or 1960. We were really aware of it as the nuns who taught at my school had a school in the Congo and were obviously worried about their Sisters and the children. A happy story about the same time was Princess Margaret's wedding. She really looked like a fairytale princess and it was all very glamorous. Two strange things that don't really go together. Actually the other thing I remember that year (1960) was Kennedy getting elected. My mother thought he was wonderful and my father thought the Kennedys were a family of crooks.

1960 was obviously a big year for me.

I was in bed ill, I caught flu the same week I had my second baby. They brought a TV up to my bedroom and I got very upset as the days ticked by and they still didn't find Lesley Whittle and then I saw Jonathan Dimbleby in a story about the Biafra famine. I got very depressed and was in bed for about 2 weeks. My mother confiscated the TV in the end as she said it was damaging my mental health.

I was a kid during the Vietnam war. I remember one day watching horrible violent fighting on the tv and my mum was like what are you watching?? “the gorillas” I said. “I’ve been waiting for hours to see the gorillas”. She then had to explain to me they were war guerrillas, not hairy gorillas.
