They are currently everywhere. Out backyard is full of them and they sneak into the house every time someone opens a door or window. I know they don't do anything to humans, but they're bloody annoying!

Fleabagster · 23/09/2020 21:19

They’re everywhere in our house!!

flowerycurtain · 23/09/2020 21:20

I've never seen so many as this year. It must be the weather

Boobissue · 23/09/2020 21:22

I had 6 tonight in the kitchen whilst I was preparing dinner!!

DS &DH rescued me!

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/09/2020 21:23

Just had to dodge 2 to switch off my lamp. We are also over run with them here

GunsAndShips · 23/09/2020 21:24

Depends which creature you mean...

"The phrase 'daddy long legs' illustrates one of the biggest problems in biology. That is, people in different parts of the world use the same name to refer to more than one species or even groups of species.

In the case of 'daddy long legs' this name is used to refer to one of three different invertebrates:

A true fly belonging to the family Tipulidae. These flies are also sometimes called Crane flies.
A type of arachnid related to spiders known as an Opilione or sometimes as a harvestman.
A species of spider called Pholcus phalangioides which is found in cellars, basements and dark corners of houses. It's also called the Daddy Long Legs spider or Cellar spider."

SpeedofaSloth · 23/09/2020 21:25

I like them, they fly like their legs belong to someone else and if you look at their tiny faces through a window, you can see their funny long noses.

SpeedofaSloth · 23/09/2020 21:25

I am talking about crane flies.

SpeedofaSloth · 23/09/2020 21:26

The enormous meaty spiders can fuck off, though.

FayKnights · 23/09/2020 21:27

My SIL in Scotland calls them Jenny Longlegs, she is terrified of them!
We are seeing loads here in SE London!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 23/09/2020 21:27

They're everywhere! Never known a year like it! Thought is was just us - gals to see it isn't!!

TorkTorkBam · 23/09/2020 21:27

Seven crane flies came in tonight. What is going on?

Oysterbabe · 23/09/2020 21:28

We saw some in the garden earlier. DD must have never noticed one before because she was fascinated. They freak me out a bit.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 23/09/2020 21:28

*glad even. For reference we are in Essex.

SingingSands · 23/09/2020 21:30

You need cellar spiders. This is what they do to daddy long legs...

BOAK.

It's September. Tis the season/month for them unfortunately. They only seem to hang around for this month weirdly so they'll be gone by October. Hang in there. I must say they're not as abundant as they were say 30 years ago thank God!

Alarae · 23/09/2020 21:30

It's why I hate September. Crane fly month.

(Six legged) Spiders with wings. What could be worse?!

magicstar1 · 23/09/2020 21:31

Crane flies are the only insects that terrify me. We have false widows etc but I don’t care...if a crane fly comes near me I turn into a squealing three year old.
I’ve been catching them in a big container and letting them out in the garden. DH hits them with a tea towel ... which means hurting it and leaving legs and bits everywhere.

VeraPink · 23/09/2020 21:31

YES!! They are bloody EVERYWHERE this year and they are the one insect I truly can’t tolerate. I hate to kill anything myself, but I turn a blind eye to my cat hunting the fuckers.

Throughabushbackwards · 23/09/2020 21:33

Yes. The floppy nitwits are everywhere here (SE).

Emmelina · 23/09/2020 21:33

They’re everywhere, I’ve evicted so many the last few nights.
Seem to have broken the kids fear of them though by having them look them up on the internet; there were some hilarious (to them) descriptions of how they fly and why they’re so clumsy which seems to have put them at ease!

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 23/09/2020 21:33

We've only seen one so far (unless you count the unfortunate dead one that got caught in a web near our front door). They're annoying but I'd rather that any day than the massive house spiders. Thankfully the conkers and spider spray and cat seem to be keeping them at bay.

Although I've probably jinxed it now Sad

TheBeesKnee · 23/09/2020 21:34

Those little bastards keep getting into my house somewhere. I can't stand them and screech for my DP to remove them.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 23/09/2020 21:36

I'm not clicking on that photo *singingsands". Even the thumbnail looks horrifying. What the heck is going on?Shock

SpeedofaSloth · 23/09/2020 21:37

floppy nitwits

Perfect, I shall call them this from now on.
