amatsip · 23/09/2020 21:14

We have after much screaming from 8 year dd released 6 daddy long legs in the last 36 hours.

YABU- just daddy long legs doing their thing.

YANBU- daddy long legs uprising to take over the world.

How do you get them out? I caught one in my hands and put it outside but always want to be reassured they don’t bite or anything !! Same with spiders although even if I knew they didn’t I would still struggle too much and can only hold tiny ones

Deadringer · 23/09/2020 21:38

We have loads of them in our porch recently, (Dublin) i haven't seen one in years!

Limeavocado · 23/09/2020 21:41

We've been totally invaded by crane flies too, I've spent the last few days running around the house closing all the windows each early evening before the sun drops. I loathe them and even with the windows closed I found 4 in our upstairs hallway when I was putting my youngest to bed - reckon my OH let them in when opening the back door briefly. I confess to us older ones in the house being cold blooded crane fly murderers to allow me and my youngest to sleep at night as we both suffer from 'spider' wakeful nightmares. About a week ago we counted 16 upstairs alone Shock

SingingSands · 23/09/2020 21:43

Hoof I've shared my shower with that cellar spider for months, watching her grow gradually bigger but with she definitely caught more than she could chew with that one!!

megletthesecond · 23/09/2020 21:44

The dc's hate them so yours truly is responsible for chasing and evicting them.
I've deliberately left spiders webs up to try and catch them, they don't kill them but it slows them down for a minute so I can grab them.

megletthesecond · 23/09/2020 21:45

loose they don't bite or sting. I always catch them with my hands.

jackfruitz · 23/09/2020 21:46

We’ve had loads too! It’s the season and we’re treating our lawn for leatherjackets as it was particularly patchy this year. We dug up a section of the lawn and it was crawling with hundreds of leatherjackets so no wonder there are so many crane flies about in our garden!

ladybird69 · 23/09/2020 21:48

When I mentioned this to my mum years ago she told me that there’s a short period in the autumn when all the eggs hatch that’s why we get them all at once. I’m off to google the life span of a crane fly now.

Poppiesway1 · 23/09/2020 21:49

OMG.. I have literally just got into bed, lights off about to have a game of candy crush and I was suddenly bombarded daddy long legs!!! It made me jump and I threw my phone across my bedroom Grin
Thankfully my phone is fine. I have to say I’m not bothered by daddy long legs.. it just made me jump! There’s been loads here the past few days

AriettyHomily · 23/09/2020 21:50

We've got loads and I remember having loads when I was a kid, haven't seen them for years

AyDeeAitchDee · 23/09/2020 21:52

Yup.

I'm not scared of bugs at all.

But one in our bathroom made me jump just now. Came at me as I reached for my toothbrush.

I'm SE so I mean crane fly. X

I have an Ikea bag behind my armchair - a couple of days ago I could hear rustling and thought there was a very large rodent, when I was brave enough I saw that t was a daddy long legs in the Ikea bag. F knows how something so small and light can make such a noise!

peakygal · 23/09/2020 21:55

This year for me (Ireland) I have been swarmed by earwigs, daddy long legs, and spiders that are so big Im sure I hear them laugh when my heart almost stops on sight 😫

They give me the heebeegeebees. How long till the daddy long legs (and spiders) season is over!

mineofuselessinformation · 23/09/2020 22:00

It's the season for them. I don't like them either, but in around a week or so they will all be gone.

motherofdxughters · 23/09/2020 22:02

They are invading us too. Thank God it's not spiders!

torthecatlady · 23/09/2020 22:10

None in our house so far... thankfully, as I am terrified of the little bastards. Certainly is the season for them though!

WitchWand · 23/09/2020 22:14

Poor little creatures !
How about looking at things from their perspective...

"We don't harm you. If possible we'd like to live outside.

The trouble is that when we get lost, you ginormous humans (who have taken over the whole world) , instead showing us the way back towards the fresh air, squash us or squirt us with poison.

Please have a heart. Don't harm us anymore. Be like us. We're scared of you too. But we don't hurt you."

This thread is going to give me nightmares.

HeartshapedFox · 23/09/2020 22:18

I hate these so much. At least a spider isn’t going to fly into your face, shudder.

AramintaLee · 23/09/2020 22:32

Crane flies make me scream like a little girl. More so than spiders. They also seem to sense my fear and fly directly at me. THEY KNOW.

Elephantday82 · 23/09/2020 22:38

Hate them and they’ve absolutely destroyed my lawn. They follow the light so we try to keep the doors and windows shut when all the lights are on.

user1536853684 · 23/09/2020 22:39

At least a spider isn’t going to fly into your face, shudder.

No, a spider just sits patiently by your face waiting to greet you when you wake up in the morning.
