FACE VISORS DON'T WORK - obviously

So today a study shows that face visors don't work. You don't say - wasn't it pretty obvious given the minuscule size of virus particles! It's just a virtue signalling - look at us/me aren't we great for saving lives blah blah.....
I mean SD, hand washing naturally but even masks (which I wear to protect others) really isn't going to protect ourselves. The virus particles are very very very small - but it does stop SOME of the aerosols.... but again virtue signalling in the main.

Basically tract and trace and isolate all infected. Isolate after foreign travel too.

YABU - we thoughT visors worked and wear them (hairdressers/shops etc, we still think they work

Lead author Professor Siddhartha Verma added: 'Face shields have noticeable gaps along the bottom and the sides, and masks with exhalation ports include a one-way valve which restricts airflow when breathing in, but allows free outflow of air.

'The inhaled air gets filtered through the mask material, but exhaled breath passes through the valve unfiltered.'

The research concluded that face shields are not as effective as regular face masks. '

Of all the visual things people do visors do seem pretty stupid...

Visors are fine so long as they are in addition to a mask, but not instead of one. The visor may help the wearer a little - less likely to get a droplet in they eye, perhaps - but are no use in protecting other people (which is the whole reason we are having to wear masks).

Masks don't really work either, as you say, it's all just virtue signalling.

I see quite a few people wearing both on restaurants. I don't think they are stupid but I think you have a superiority complex.

I wear a visor because I can't wear a mask. I know it's not as protective as a mask, but I figure some protection is better than no protection. It definitely stops some of the aerosol effect because I can see the evidence of it on the visor when I take it off.

Masks don’t block everything. But just like I would prefer it if someone who pissed themselves when standing in front of me was wearing pants, I would much prefer someone sneezing in my vicinity to be wearing a mask.

Visors have only ever reduced the chances of aerosols produced by others entering via the eyes. That is all. They offer no protection to those around you.

Nothing is a guarantee - it's just putting some sort of barrier system in place and hope it stops some exposure

I'm seriously considering putting a plastic bag over my head and just getting it all over with ...... if nothing works we're all DOOOOOOMMMMMEEEDDDDDDDD.......

They help

They reduce the amount of virus in the air

They help to stop you getting a direct face full of slobber/virus.

There's not much value at all if the person is also wearing a mask.

I've just been to visit dh in hospital. They had me fully togged up in mask (which of course I had anyway), visor, gloves and apron. Happy to wear it if it means I get to see him and I would hope they know more about ppe than I do!

I presume the visor was to protect my eyes but I agree, they shouldn't be used as mask replacements.

Curious about the apron tbh. It covered so little that I wasn't sure what good it would do...

I'm confused about the results of the study. I understand that visors on their own offer limited protection, but how about visors worn with masks?

This is why Dr. Joy Henningsen, clinical assistant professor, VAMC Section, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, noted that plastic face shields work best to “protect the wearer from an infected person when used with a mask.”

This is why she says that face shields are a good supplement to face coverings, but should not be used in their place.

“There’s no such thing as too many weapons against the novel coronavirus,” said Henningsen. “The more protection, the better.”

“Face coverings, regular hand washing, physical distancing, and staying home as much as possible are very good tools. Add a face shield to all of those requisite practices and you go from ‘good’ to ‘great,'” she said.

We know they don't work. But they are surprisingly good at protecting those of us with exemptions from judgey arseholes who have appointed themselves as Mask Monitors.

I think for close contact work, like hairdressing or beauty or healthcare, then a visor doesn't do much.

I would expect that they work to a greater extent for activities done at a greater distance.

As for the bit about exhalation valves, that is true if the valve goes through the fabric, but I have a mask with valves were the filter goes between the person and the valve so actually the exhaled air is well-filtered before leaving the mask and is safer than those one-layer stretchy masks that some people are wearing.

You are a little behind on this OP. The Govt changed the rules so that hairdressers' have to wear a mask under visors from 15th August precisely because visors had been proven to be useless.

Of course mask work , people are just sounding really ignorant and stupid now!

So, you're saying they do stop some of the aerosol transmission? But that they don't stop aerosol transmission? Nobody has ever claimed that they are 100% aerosol-tight.

I don't see it as virtue signalling at all. All the teachers at DSs school wear a mask and visor. As do the school transport staff (minibus with 3 kids and one adult in the back). It's not perfect but it's better than nothing, given that we already are taking the calculated risk of sending him school, its all about minimising where you can.
