To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

Midlifelights · 23/09/2020 07:31

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

You are free to wear whatever you like but there really isn't any need to be such a foul mouth about it. Just put it on and stop swearing about it.

There are many countries around the world where you'd be arrested for dressing like that. My friend's 18 year old was arrested in Tehran because even though she was entirely covered, including head scarf, she was wearing a belt which provided body definition. We oughtn't to take our freedoms for granted.

msflibble · 23/09/2020 08:15

wear whatever the fuck you like OP. your body is for you, not your mum or society or anyone else laying claim to it!

CeaseAndDesist · 23/09/2020 08:15

lol what the actual fuck @KaptainKaveman?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 23/09/2020 08:16

I'm 40 and have fibro, so comfort is my top priority with clothing. I still have long hair. It's been almost bum length since my teens and I like it. Nowadays it isn't quite as long, but it's still healthy. Also it costs £0 at the hairdressers. My mum was paying £30+ a month for her "sensible" short hair.
Dungarees sound ace. Are they easy to manage if your thumbs hurt all the time? Buttons are not my thing any more!

@LunaNorth I love that website, brilliant!

LunaNorth · 23/09/2020 08:17

They’re marvellous, thank you, @NeedToKnow101.

And yours?

Midlifelights · 23/09/2020 08:19

@KaptainKaveman right 😳 I’ll curb my language and thank my blessings.

So fucking what, Kaptain. We don't live in bloody Tehran, it's not a race to the bottom, you know. Hmm We can be as 'foul-mouthed' as we like.

Pebblexox · 23/09/2020 08:20

Wear what you want, and wear it with pride!!

Ihatefish · 23/09/2020 08:20

Wear whatever makes you feel good (this also applies at 74

Pebblexox · 23/09/2020 08:21

Also my mum is in her 50's and looks better in dungarees than I do so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Angelina82 · 23/09/2020 08:22

YANBU to wear whatever you like, but YABU,as a 47 year old woman, to let your mum’s opinion affect you so much.

Grin love this!
mylittlesandwich · 23/09/2020 08:23

Of course you should wear what makes you happy! I'm younger but I'm really quite overweight. I've been hiding out in baggy tops and leggings for a long time. This year I bought dungarees and dresses. My life doesn't need to be ok hold until I manage to loose enough weight!

Your sweary, aggressive post suggests this thread is exactly that Smile.

You just get on with your hate and enjoy it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 08:24

I'm 65 and if I can't wear what I want now when can I? I would definitely wear dungarees and will be getting some.

No its not a 'generational thing '.

I'm of the mind you should wear what you feel good in

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 08:25

Today, my natural red hair is half natural, half peacock coloured - green merging to purple. I probably won't go grey - more stripy blond. I plan to have pale colours on top with darker ones on the bottom - the lighter the hair - the more degrees of freedom! I'm 41 btw and still wear some clothes I had since my undergrad.

As a STEM person, people are more interested in my output not my hair colour.

gingercat02 · 23/09/2020 08:25

DM thinks "women of your age" shouldn't have ponytails. Im 51

MaxNormal · 23/09/2020 08:26

@KaptainKaveman are you new here? Mumnset is notoriously fucking swear, we even chuck cunts around Grin

TartanDMs · 23/09/2020 08:28

I wear what I like in my 40s. It leads to some teasing from my parents sometimes but nothing that would make me wisdom my choices. The only bone of contention is my hair. I hate having it in my face, and like it being tied back, which i can't do with shorter hair, and i don't suit a really short hairstyle. My mum and nan both tell me i am too old for long hair. Also I went grey early in my teens and have dyed it ever since. I like it bright red but my mum stopped doing it for me when i got to 40 because she is trying to convince me to go blonde. Nope.

cobblers123 · 23/09/2020 08:29

My mum used to think women over 30 shouldn't have long hair, it should be short.

I am about to turn 66 and thanks to Covid and being in and out of hospital, I couldn't get to a hairdresser so my shortish stacked bob is now almost on my shoulders. She would have probably commented on it by now if she was still around.

Guess what! I like it like this and I've had more compliments about my hair being longer than I ever got when it was styled and short.

Mums eh! Grin

Mintjulia · 23/09/2020 08:29

Ignore your mother. How is it any of her business? And what does she imagine will happen Grin

I'm 57 and I was wearing shorts on Sunday. I wear running leggings and trainers a lot. And I still have several bikinis.

Nanny0gg · 23/09/2020 08:30

@Midlifelights

She’s also really horrorstruck if I have a grey hair (she still dyes hers at 73) and really comments a lot if I show any grey! It’s SO weird!!! I quite like the odd grey hair to be honest
Why shouldn't she dye her her hair at 73? I expect i will too. Iron grey hair is a horrible texture and a very unflattering colour for me
CeaseAndDesist · 23/09/2020 08:31

Some people are really fucking odd aren't they?

Interestingly there's a lot of pearl-clutching about swearing in the comments under @LunaNorth's link too. The subject matter must attract them.

No mention of Tehran and how we should just be grateful we don't live in a violent, patriarchal theocracy though. That is definitely a new twist on a thread about dungarees.
