To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

Midlifelights · 23/09/2020 07:31

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

People can wear what they like but if i am asked for an opinion will answer honestly, I dont go up to random people and tell my opinion but if I go clothes shopping with someone and they hold something up as ask I will tell them what I think or if they are trying on clothes at home

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 28/09/2020 13:20

@MikeUniformMike. I’m sure you look fab in it!

MikeUniformMike · 28/09/2020 13:22

Thanks. I just think it's a bit of fun. I wear far too much black but the tartan brightens it.

Zenithbear · 28/09/2020 13:36

I've just sorted out my wardrobe and anything even a teensy bit frumpy mumsy or appropriately middle aged has gone. I don't try to look younger either, just want to look good. I'm early 50s with a good figure, hair and face so fuck it.

I like the sound of that.

No one over the age of 4 looks good in dungarees

MikeUniformMike · 28/09/2020 14:13

@Shortfeet, you've not seen me in mine.

That's your opinion which people are free to ignore. It's not a rule.

Agree...a ridiculous clothing item! Obviously wear what you want. I will think what I want.
Biddie191 · 01/10/2020 09:59

If we cant wear them now, then when? We are only going to get older, and will get no medals for only wearing shit clothes we don't even like that much
Absolutely this!
I'm fortunate that my Mum has always had her own style, and has never really tried to change mine (or sometimes my lack of!)
My cow print Sarsparilla's (sorry about spelling) are the best jeans I've ever had, starting to wear a bit thin, so I need to try to mend them sometime before they dissolve....

Janegrey333 · 01/10/2020 10:22

A small dash of leopard skin is stylish. 🙂

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:19

I think can Defoe be stylish when mature woman. But sometimes clothes for young people not looking so good. Old woman in leopard skin can look like shot leopard and stuffed like taxidermy lol.

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:19

Defo not Defoe. Not talking about Wilhelm. Am drinking too much wine tonight. 😂

mummypie17 · 02/10/2020 07:31

Sounds like my mum. She's not horrible or anything but thinks she's giving good advice. She says not to wear bikinis or shorts at my age (I'm mid-30s!!).

Alsonification · 02/10/2020 07:34

You should wear exactly what you want at any age. I say this as a 45 yr old currently wearing skinny black jeans, a Metallica T-shirt & biker boots with long dyed red hair. Lol.

Mariola321 · 03/10/2020 14:34

No bikini in 30s! I'm 30s and slimmer than most the teenagers nowadays! Many fat young girls in this country.

Lillyhatesjaz · 03/10/2020 15:22

I wouldn't wear dungarees myself as I am short and plump but I do like them. Nadia from the bake off was wearing some on her new show and looked really good.

Midlifelights · 04/10/2020 07:33

I listened to a podcast yesterday with Jo Whiley- who is 54 and looks utterly fabulous- saying that she gives no thought to what anyone else thinks about what she wears- she’s my new clothes hero!

Jo Whiley dresses like a goddess.

I still think about the blue maxi dress she wore at Glastonbury. And I’ve been searching for her blue and red stripy jumper for about two years. I could have bought one, balked at the price and have regretted it ever since.

What podcast was it please?

Midlifelights · 04/10/2020 08:05

@LunaNorth it’s the midlife one with Sam Baker- The Shift - it’s great

Dm never criticises what I wear. We did all that when I was a, teenage goth. She learned then that it wasn't worth the hassle and I wouldn't take any bloody notice 🤣

LunaNorth · 04/10/2020 08:30

Thank you!

Yeh, I think that's why my mum wouldn't say anything! If she was still trying to make comments when I was in my 20s she would have received a critique on her own outfit!
ChasingRainbows19 · 04/10/2020 08:52

My grandma wore shellsuits (90s) trackies and trainers when she was in her late sixties. Cos it was comfy!
Wear what you want... life’s too short and clothes can be an expression of who you are.

Craftycorvid · 04/10/2020 10:12

My lovely DM died this year and we’re clearing her house. I’ve found lots of photos that brought back memories, but it was a jolt to do the maths and realise mum was younger than I am now in some of those pictures. She adopted the ‘old lady’ look around the age of 40 and wore it like a uniform. It was actually very ageing and a far cry from the stylish things she wore in her youth. I love the fact that most women I know of my age and older just wear what makes them feel good.

As to men and their opinions. I have a lovely male friend who once asked me - in all innocence - why women wear clothes they know men don’t find sexy. He was genuinely puzzled, but as he’s generally a nice guy, I let him live. There is this idea that a man can strut about looking however he likes at whatever age.
