To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

Midlifelights · 23/09/2020 07:31

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

How the actual fuck is this vote not 100% YANBU?!

MagnoliaXYZ · 25/09/2020 23:02

Wear what you like!

SodaPerson · 26/09/2020 00:23

YANBU, west what you think looks good.

Although, I do think animal print should stay in the 1980's...regardless of anyone's age.

Bwlch · 26/09/2020 08:28

How the actual fuck is this vote not 100% YANBU?

Have you considered that the OP's (judgmental) mother and her friends might be on MN?

MrsZola · 26/09/2020 08:45

Wear what you like! I'm 58 - I wear dungarees, I wear a bikini, I wear Docs. Nobody is looking at me - it's fabulously liberating being an 'old' invisible woman 😁

granny24 · 26/09/2020 09:15

I wear dungarees and bikinis. I am 73. I look fabulous.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2020 11:16

I bet you do! Acquiring dungarees is now on my to do list. I didn't wear a bikini when I was young, however, and am not about to start. I usually lie on the beach fully dressed and go in the sea no further than my ankles.
Grilledaubergines · 26/09/2020 11:22

@VampireBill

To those struggling with the loo in a one-piece, just pull it to the side and wee.
Or wear the tankini that they want to wear?
StrangeLookingParasite · 26/09/2020 17:25

Michèle Lamy is 76. I don't think she cares about any of this stuff (though I'm not sure she'd wear dungarees).

Willow2017 · 26/09/2020 17:36

@MikeUniformMike

YABU. You should not criticise your mother for her opinion and M&S clothes are fine.

Of course you should wear what you like, but when your mother says it just nod nicely and do what you like.

So you can never tell your mother your point of view? You can never disagree with them? Show your true personality? Sod that.

M&S clothes may be ok for you but not for a huge majority of us.

Sounded like you think women should just pretend to agree with every one else while skulking around doing thier own thing in secret!
Not a chance.

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 19:28

@Willow2017, nowt wrong with M&S clothes.
The clothes we give each other are usually more Jigsaw, Hobbs, Boden and Toast (me to her) and Lucy&Yak type and Toast (her to me).

M0mmzee · 26/09/2020 20:02

I have been at the end of someone saying that over a certain age I shouldn’t have long hair! If you go back in time eg Edwardian or Victorian times every woman had long hair young and old alike!
On the bikini question. I have a photo of my 88 yr old Mum in a bikini when she was in her 50’s and she looked fabulous!
However, even if you don’t feel fabulous you can wear whatever you want, it’s no-one else’s business.

Ddot · 26/09/2020 20:33

Well this will shock ya, I'm 56 and wear dungarees, shortish shorts, mini skirts, dr martens and whatever I feel good in. I really dont care what people think or say. I do think following the rule of legs or boobs is wise, one or other, never both. Always legs for me as wasn't blessed with boobs Haha. As I grow older I realise, do what makes you happy. Look in the mirror if what's reflected back at ya, makes you smile, blow it a kiss and own it.

Ddot · 26/09/2020 20:37

Oversize dungarees are good pull in with chunky belt, thin jumper and boots

Mariola321 · 26/09/2020 21:09

I would not wear a bikini if I was very fat but it would be my decision to choose.

Ddot · 26/09/2020 21:57

I have hideous scar on my back, I hated it so much because it reminds me of something I went through. It was difficult because I also have scars on my tummy. Then one very hot sunny day I thought s** it. I put on my strappy tshirt and went out. I am me! scars or no scars, I am one hell of a stylish old lady when the mood takes me. Dont let other people tell you how to look. The world is full of sheeples x

Ddot · 26/09/2020 22:31

Didnt vote cos I don't know what the hell it means, sorry I'm sure its obvious to everyone else but not me

Ddot · 26/09/2020 22:43

Oh and I like a twin set and pearls, I wear mine with skinny jeans and 14 eye docs

Ddot · 27/09/2020 07:35

Oh my goodness just voted, I'm so old Haha just worked it out. Sorry for being dumb ass

Lillyhatesjaz · 27/09/2020 07:56

My mum always tried to tell me what to wear even in my teens she hated me wearing trousers, she would get me marks and spencer sets for Christmas that were like hers but a different colour. Some times clothes she didn't like would have an accident in the wash. In my 20s and early 30s she would sometimes refuse to go out with me unless I changed. I was a jeans and nice top wearer. I am in my 50s now and wear what I like, but it took me a long time to get confidence in my choices.

gubbbbbddaaaa · 27/09/2020 08:12

I'm 46 and wear what I want ! Tell her to go back to the 50's!!

SpeckledFrogsLog · 27/09/2020 08:42

I’ve had very short hair since my early 20s. At the grand old age of 48 I am now growing it. Am I doing it wrong?!

Ddot · 27/09/2020 09:23

Too short can age you as well as too long, so go with a medium length, see how your hair is coping, if its healthy and thick you can go a little longer. If your hair is in good conditionand, it suits your face who bloody cares

SoloMummy · 27/09/2020 09:38

I suppose that we all have our own idea of when choosing to wear what we would like to look good in can straddle into mutton dressed as lamb!

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/09/2020 09:52

mutton dressed as lamb!

I absolutely hate this expression. I am not trying to look young but I wear the clothes I like, that I think suit my body shape (others may disagree but I don't care) and that I feel comfortable in.
