To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

Now, now listen to your mother! Get yourself to M&S and choose your colour in the perfunctory twin-set and pearls you must buy in your 40's😂.

FrankskinnerscRoc · 25/09/2020 07:46

I’ve seen them in the shops but never actually seen anyone wearing dungarees in years, not even a 2 year old. I only ever remember painters & kids entertainers wearing them. So why all of a sudden does everyone on MN wear them 🤔. I rather fancy a boiler suit myself but sadly I piss far too much for it.

WiserOlder · 25/09/2020 08:05

I dont get dungarees. Each to their own i know, but being 50 and 5'1" im not looking for assistance on how to look short and shapeless. I have a waist and covering that up is a bad look. I guess if you are tall and carrying around the middle, they might not make you look bigger. Might be flattering on a tall over weight person.

On a shorter woman, bad idea. Team them with ugg boots just to make sure you look 4 foot 8 😁🍷

WiserOlder · 25/09/2020 08:08

@Lisa82sim i dont think EVERYBODY looked at her and thought "embarrassing"
Maybe some people thought she was still feeling her old self.

ladyvimes · 25/09/2020 08:15

I give no fucks! I have just hit mid thirties and had a revelation! No one who matters actually cares!
And I have just invested I two pairs of dungarees. Don’t care what I look like but they are the comfiest and easily wearable item of clothing I have ever owned! Absolutely love them and totally get why we put toddlers in them! So glad they are making a comeback!

WiserOlder · 25/09/2020 08:17

Invested in dungarees 🍷🍷😂🤔

formerbabe · 25/09/2020 08:17

Aren't dungarees an absolute pain when you need the loo? I never put my DC in them...I found them a right pain for nappy changes

Roselilly36 · 25/09/2020 08:25

Wear & do as you please OP. That’s a mother problem, I expect she has strong opinions on other aspects of your life too. My mum was like this, I couldn’t do a thing right, an absolute classic of hers was telling me I was too old to have a baby, I was 29 at the time!

Feefsie · 25/09/2020 08:30

I’m 52 and have a lovely pair of dungarees from Seasalt.

LunaNorth · 25/09/2020 08:36

I love my dungarees.

They are comfy and warm.

They are also excellent twat-detectors. If someone laughs and makes Andy Pandy jokes, I instantly know I’m dealing with a rude twat.

Perfect.

Lisa82sim · 25/09/2020 09:01

@WiserOlder I worked there... Believe me, she was the talk of every member of staff. 300 store staff would Nod and laugh with colleagues when she came in and laugh at her in the canteen. Customers would frown, watch her and comment to us. You weren't there... You didn't see how bad it was. Grow old gracefully, an old woman hanging on to look like someone alot younger isn't a good look.

blagaaw99 · 25/09/2020 09:04

@Mysa74

Wear what makes you happy Op. I'm 46 and have just treated myself to my first pair of dungarees after wanting some for years... After catching sight of myself in the mirror I do start singing Mamma Mia on occasion but that film makes me happy too Grin
Love this vision Grin

What a toxic place to work. When colleagues are unkind and judgemental about other people don't expect them to be nice about you.

MakeOfThatWhatYouWill · 25/09/2020 09:12

I'm short, fat, a few days from being 50, have short hair and I would love a pair of dungarees! I would totally wear them with a stripy top and converse and probably a tasty devine necklace, just to piss of the general population even more (and everyone on the "stylish" S and B threads) Grin

LongHotSummerJustPassedMeBy · 25/09/2020 09:36

Maybe the 80 year old was a former rock chick who had been to Woodstock and just wanted to bring some of that vibe to the canteen. Smile

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2020 09:43

And maybe she wasn't 'trying to look younger' but was trying to be herself.

IntermittentParps · 25/09/2020 10:01

Lisa82sim, you and your colleagues all sound awful TBH.

SchmooobyDoo · 25/09/2020 10:14

LunaNorth, I enjoyed that 😂

Wore dungarees during my pregnancy (aged 44).
Have another pair, for post-baby weight. Levi’s Lovely!

SchmooobyDoo · 25/09/2020 10:17

Although, if I don’t quit the cake, I will be checking out the M&S stretchy waists department...

Get a Lucy & Yak pair, they’re very forgiving Wink
HMBB · 25/09/2020 10:48

@nosswith

You can wear whatever you choose. Hopefully you are also one of the very few people in the UK with some sense of style.
Haha thanks a bunch for that sweeping statement. We all look like shit then!

I personally am not stylish but I have a lot of friends who are, so I am taking offence in their behalf.

LovelyIssues · 25/09/2020 10:53

Good for you OP!!

PhoebeSnow · 25/09/2020 11:25

Love her glittery boots! Wear what you want op, dungarees or not.

Cam2020 · 25/09/2020 12:28

The fantastic thing about getting older is giving zero fucks what other people think! Please yourself and damn well enjoy it!

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2020 13:28

To the pp who mentioned not wanting to disguise her waist and those who said women in dungarees look like toddlers I recommend Land girl dungarees. I'm thinking of wearing nothing but these and a fair Isle jumper from now on.
