To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

I am in my mid 50’s and my mother who is in her 80’s still comments on my hair and clothes and I don’t wear anything outrageous just jeans, t shirts and baggy jumpers. I have long hair that is Usually worn in a plaited ponytail and going grey and shock horror I don’t dye it Or use highlights to try to disguise it.
But then when my mother was my age she worn a lot of leggings Which I wouldn’t be seen dead in at any age.

Teesstar · 24/09/2020 20:01

I am about to hit 40. I have dungarees. I will hopefully still be wearing them at 80 🙂 wear what you like gorgeous!

Peppermintpatty24 · 24/09/2020 20:02

It's completely up to you what you where, when and why. Don't pay her no mind and just be you.

Kate139 · 24/09/2020 20:11

Maybe she is just jealous that you can still wear those things and look good. When people put other people down its often due to jealousy.

I'm in my early 70s, I mainly live in jeans as it's easier for walking the dog.

I do have some beautiful clothes that some people would probably judge are far too young for me though.

I'm happy to wear shorts and a bikini when the occasion calls for it.

I take care of myself and I'm buggered if I'm going to cover myself in some crimplene monstrosity because I've reached a certain age.

My DCs all dress in their own style, also probably what a lot of people would judge too young for their ages.

There'll be no transitioning to M&S stretchy wear in my family, thank you.

cheapskatemum · 24/09/2020 20:35

I’m 59 & have dungarees, animal print jacket & (high heeled) shoes & bikinis in my wardrobe. Have worn the dungarees this year & bikinis in the garden when it was hot. Would absolutely love to have the opportunity to wear the leopard print gear, because it would mean I was dressing up to go out, which I haven’t done for 6 months. My late mother was a great proponent of wearing what you dare & I’m glad I’ve inherited that aspect of her character. Ignore your mother OP.

Yep you can absolutely wear what makes you happy. Some will judge you by your appearance others couldn't give a monkies. I would only say that it's important to have a sense of propriety when it comes to clothes for certain occasions, otherwise live and let live.

OldYorkshirePud · 24/09/2020 20:46

@Margerine78 absolutely - I never went back and made sure everyone I knew/know didn’t go there either Grin

MammaHen · 24/09/2020 20:54

@FippertyGibbett PMSL 🤣

ALbigbump · 24/09/2020 20:59

OP I love your attitude and I’m with you. I’m 48, wear bikinis and give zero fucks too 👍

galaxybuttons · 24/09/2020 20:59

My Mothers's the same with personal criticism of my clothes and hair! Wear what you like , if nothing else you can have the pleasure of knowing it winds her up! 😆

Sunrainsnow · 24/09/2020 21:05

My Mum has a certain short haircut that is very popular with her generation. She has had a similar haircut since before I was born. She is very much obsessed with how you shouldn’t have long hair as you get older. I am knocking on 40 and have long hair. It is wavy and sticks out in all directions and very high maintenance in a bob. My round face does not suit short hair, hence I have no intention of cutting it.

We were recently having a conversation with a lady who I thought to be younger than my Mum. As the conversation went on I realised she was at least my Mums age from what she said. I thought to myself actually it’s probably just the hair. She had pretty mid length hair rather than my Mums very dated cut. We walked away and my Mum commented on her hair to me. ‘I don’t know why older women have long hair... it’s so ageing!’ I had to suppress a giggle. I did say that I thought her hair was nice. Too which I got the ‘I’ve just eaten a wasp’ expression.

P999 · 24/09/2020 21:09

I'm 47 and look fucking hot in my stringy leopard print bikini.

Curvy01 · 24/09/2020 21:12

I draw the line at a bikini but I certainly wear dunagrees coz they're comfy and I'm 61! Tell your Mum to wind her neck in Smile

Nat6999 · 24/09/2020 21:20

My mum tells me that at 54 I should have my hair cut short & accept that I am going grey, the usual comment is "what do you think at your age" I'm sure in her head she thinks I'm in my 80's like her.

WiserOlder · 24/09/2020 21:37

I think my Mum sees us as having grown up together as well, and therefore kind of the same age. I sort of get it. I look at a woman of 35 and I know she's younger than I am but I don't think of her as a young woman who wouldn't / couldn't be friendly or friends with me. Does that make sense. My mum had me quite young, she was 26, not that young 50 years ago though. So I do think she still sees herself as 50/

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2020 21:49

I've bought 3 pairs of dungarees in the last month - I do look like a mad toddler in them as I'm not tall but I like them 🤷‍♀️

Lisa82sim · 24/09/2020 22:42

I still remember this 80 year old woman walking into asda every week wearing fish net tights, black stilettos, black leather mini skirt and animal print tops, her hair was jet black... Looked dyed, plastered in make up and she looked about 90. It was basically mutt dressed as lamb. Sure, she can wear what she wants, but everyone dthoight she looked awful and I remember thinking that's someone's gran or mum.... That's embarrassing. If that was my mum, I'd neevr want to be seen in public with them. I'd say people can wear what they want but abit of class and dressed appropriately is still better than a trashy looking older woman...not that dungarees are trashy... I think your mum is bonkers there, but if you have kids I'd certainly think of them.

Singlenotsingle · 25/09/2020 00:50

I'm 68 and have been going round all summer in a vest top and shorts, with sandals or trainers. I really don't care what people think.

Celestine70 · 25/09/2020 01:17

I have an aunt who says no long hair or babies after 30.

EagleSqueak · 25/09/2020 02:08

My mum is almost 80 and still spends most of her life in jodhpurs or jeans. She’s fabulous and exactly how I want to be if I make it to her age.
I’m 57 and wear above knee skirts and dresses, baggy cut off jeans with converse, bikinis... I’m slimmer, fitter, in better shape and have more money than I had 20 years ago so I’m making the most of it. I hated my red hair when I was younger, but now I spend a fortune on keeping it the colour I was born with. It’s also shoulder length and straight with the help of straighteners which I didn’t have when I was 20.
One of the best things about getting older is that other people’s opinions matter less and less.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/09/2020 02:22

@Celestine70

I have an aunt who says no long hair or babies after 30.
Your aunt would hate me then! Plus that's a very strange attitude and cut off to have in this day and age, when more women are having babies after 30 than before.

Alright, Judge Rinder, sheesh.
JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 25/09/2020 07:31

That 80 year old with the fishnets sounds cool - stuff being invisible. Thing is I have had a lifetime of embarrassing people simply by existing so I'm not likely to stop soon.
