To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

@WhatInFreshHell

Dungarees are a fabulous outfit! At any age! Tell her to bugger off! I love dungarees, just cannot pull them off at all 😂 I just end up looking like a toddler 🤦🏼‍♀️
This made me laugh out loud! Smile
Hippiechick162 · 24/09/2020 18:12

You do you! ...maybe wear a bikini top 👙 under your dungarees and make sure one is animal print just to prove a point lol 😆

DagenhamRoundhouse · 24/09/2020 18:17

We must wear what we like at any age

tenlittlecygnets · 24/09/2020 18:20

Wear what you want! Bet you look great!

rachaelclaire1 · 24/09/2020 18:21

Utter bullshit, wear what you want. You will start to feel old if you conform. Personally I love to see women in their 60’s 70’s being trendy and wearing what they want and surprisingly these type of people always seem to have a lust for life.

stupidcow7 · 24/09/2020 18:28

So would anyone dare tell Jane Seymour that she can't have long hair or wear a leapoard print bikini, lol I bet she'd look hot in dungarees as well, granted we don't all look like Jane Seymour, but who cares wear what the heck you want. Stuff opinions, it's your life 😉.

Pebble17 · 24/09/2020 18:28

My mother will probably say the same when she sees me in my new dungarees. I’m 44 and they are my first ever pair and I will be buying mire. They are so comfortable and I e just read Caitlin Morans book and she says the same. So you are in good company. Sod your mother.

momtoboys · 24/09/2020 18:38

You are NOT being unreasonable. I spend a great deal of time and energy worrying about my clothing being too young for my age, but I think its because I work with a lot of young professionals.

maidsmum · 24/09/2020 18:39

Yep!!! Totally agree. Fuck that!

FelicisNox · 24/09/2020 18:43

YANBU.

You're only 5 years older than I am and if you can wear a bikini (I can't) then you wear one!

Just tell her it's not socially acceptable to be so judgemental, not even to your own family so pack it in.

YogiBearcub · 24/09/2020 18:48

Don't worry. Parents live in their own time warp. Mine left the UK in her late 20s and thought I was being a slut when I moved here for wearing skirts above the knee when I was over 30 as British women don't do that!

user1485851222 · 24/09/2020 18:50

I'm 57 and wear dungarees.... I know I'm probably judged for it, but they are comfy, so I will continue to....

FazeleysRoyale · 24/09/2020 18:57

I thought I was too old for bikinis. Then I went to the south of France. There were ancient German women there letting it all hang out in bikinis, no matter what size their body. It was wonderful, they were enjoying life. I actually stood out for wearing a one piece so I got me down to the supermarket to buy a cheap bikini.

user1498572889 · 24/09/2020 19:00

I agree with you op. I wear what I like and I am 55. I still wear a bikini. I pay a lot for my holidays and I want to get all of my fat brown. 😂

OldYorkshirePud · 24/09/2020 19:01

When I was a sprightly 47 Grin I had an awful experience at a new hairdresser’s salon when the stylist asked me “how old are we?” Well, I thought “I am 47 but I don’t know about you...” and told her my age. At that she said, “don’t you think WE are too old for long straight hair?” Err, no, actually!! I was too taken aback to respond appropriately (and too polite, unfortunately!) so she cut it to shoulder length!! I hated it and grew it again. It is still mid back length now, in good condition, highlighted and keeps me feeling young. Smile
Nobody should be defined by age, wear what you like, enjoy life!!

salsah · 24/09/2020 19:03

Tell your mum that leopard print is actually NEUTRAL. It’s a well known fact. If she doesn’t believe you, she can google it. Grin

MikeUniformMike · 24/09/2020 19:05

I'm 25 and wear clothes from the adverts is the Mail on Sunday You magazine.
I wear the fuck I like.

GreySkyClouds · 24/09/2020 19:13

You can wear what you like.

Sounds like you’re lucky to still have your mother at 47, and this be the thing you’re worried about.

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 24/09/2020 19:17

I'm 48, nearly 49. I wear dungarees and animal print. But don't tell your mother, but I wore a bikini last year for the first time since I was 23. Who gives a shit. Wear what you like. You're paying for it and wearing it. If people don't like it, then don't look.

nyorks1503 · 24/09/2020 19:21

I hope that mother of yours washes out your potty mouth with carbolic! Grin
Wear what you want! Not like anyone goes anywhere anymore to see it and I also echo what someone else said - be glad you are fortunate enough to have her around still.

Harvestsquirrel1 · 24/09/2020 19:23

I agree with you. I am 50, lost 61 pounds, and damn straight I’m wearing a bikini. I also wear jeans. Enjoy your youthful beautiful self❤️

MikeUniformMike · 24/09/2020 19:27

My last post was a bit of a fib, but all the 'I'm 50 something...' as if it was ancient.

Diva66 · 24/09/2020 19:46

Personally I hate leopard print but if you love it then wear it. Your body, your clothes.

CountFosco · 24/09/2020 19:49

I'm a few years older than you and still get criticised by DM for my clothing choices. I rather enjoy the fact that at 50 I can still rebel against my Mum Grin. Feel sorry for my DDs who will not be able to rebel against by the clothes they wear.

Excuse my language but f**k your hairdresser! What a miserable judgey small-minded witch!
