To wonder what the ‘sweeping new measures’ will be?

As covered widely in the media, Boris Johnson is now said to be considering ‘sweeping new measures’ for the whole UK, sooner rather than later. What do people think these will be? No mixing between households? Pubs closed at 10pm?

@Hobsnobswantshernameback
Just to say I don't think I know something oh so top secret as you put it.
I was just saying what I've heard in my trust and that they are obviously more concerned re Winter than normal for obvious reasons.
I'm not a dementor but a realist and you need to calm the fuck down.

Bulblasagne · 19/09/2020 22:33

Forgive me but what on earth difference does 10pm mean!!

Personally I think they just need to thin us all out again, people who can work from home do, staggered school, sd is not possible with the full cohort in, go back to smaller house holds mixing.. Etc etc.

Thin things out but keep shops open, restaurants etc.

PercyPotato · 19/09/2020 22:45

The issue is the amount of families who plan on travelling and staying away from home during half term within the UK potentially taking the virus from hotspots of regional infection and spreading it wider. The lockdown needs to be stay at home, no overnight stays or mini breaks to second homes, hotels or other etc . How the hell you police that I don’t know.

Aren’t the preparations for e learning because it’s fairly likely that individual bubbles will need to close for two weeks at a time? Not for full closure? That’s what our school has told us

Maisiecow · 20/09/2020 06:08

@Piggywaspushed

There's no SD in secondary either!
And no SD in further education either! No ‘bubbles’ since offering a large range of subject options makes this impossible. Minimal mask wearing, unless you include the wearing of masks on foreheads, chins or dangling from one ear! Many classes have nearly 30 students crammed into a small, stuffy classroom. Students in FE are between 16-20 years old (adults as far as the virus is concerned). To posters who think blended learning is an option, how do you think teachers can simultaneously teach live classes and Zoom lessons? In any case, there will always be some (usually the most disadvantaged students) who will not/cannot access virtual learning. We carried on with online lessons during the last lockdown, but only 70% regularly attended them. I don’t have any solutions, just stating fact. With schools open (I don’t want them to close btw - I hated delivering online lessons), any other imposed measures are pissing in the wind!

Sweeping new measures sounds ominous.

SqidgeBum · 20/09/2020 07:58

I think 'sweeping' is simply popped in there to prepare us for BoJo to basically say and do something drastic, like tell us not to interact outside of work, for a month. It's all mental preparation for the masses. It has been the entire way through. They give a small bit of information through the news outlets, let us digest it, and then hit us hard and fast.

The annoying thing is people will fall for it all, thinking that not seeing their mother for a month will help, when in reality kids are still going to school in bubbles of 250, offices will still be encouraged to be open (because those sandwiches on the high street need buying), and spending will be encouraged. Ratting your neighbour out for having a cuppa with her 80 year old mother wont fix this.

MandyGalbandi · 20/09/2020 09:06

Travel restrictions would be good I think. No travel out of your own county.

Hercwasonaroll · 20/09/2020 15:52

I can't get to work then Mandy. Or childcare.

Howslifenow · 20/09/2020 15:54

Nothing new. Our guy is useless

demelza82 · 20/09/2020 16:13

Look, let's be honest. Virtually every bit of speculation that has been commonly shared in the media or assumed prior to official government announcements at every stage in this shitstorm has been incorrect - I've had suspicions that misleading info has been deliberately leaked prior to official announcements because it's happened too frequently. I really don't see what the point in speculating on these things is as it will most likely be something completely different to what you expect. There is nothing we can do but wait.

NewAutumnName · 20/09/2020 16:22

Anything but shutting schools.

It would appear that many of the outbreaks are from people gathering in large groups for social functions (adults not children!) so perhaps then big fines for any social groups of over 6 ... no matter what the purpose eg funerals where large numbers appear to turn up despite the rules saying otherwise.

Track the infections in the North East and West etc and when it is known where they started shut down similar gatherings.... some are from parties!

ONLY do a full lockdown in the muppet areas of the country and leave the sensible bits alone with just SD, hand washing etc.

squeekyclean · 20/09/2020 16:51

The problem with this is that people will travel between areas even more if their own is restricted. I say this as someone who lives in a tourist area fairly close to one of the areas with high cases/additional restrictions. I've noticed far more tourists/day visitors than we usually have at this time of year (police have even been involved in trying to disperse crowds in our local park, which is usually fairly empty in September). And unsurprisingly we have gone from having well below the national average number of cases per 100,000 to more than double national average. Half term will only make things worse for us.

BikeTyson · 20/09/2020 17:26

“Muppet” areas? Well that’s just fucking charming isn’t it.

cherish123 · 20/09/2020 17:28

@vanillandhoney - I agree with you.

Vynalbob · 20/09/2020 17:34

No social distancing in most English schools. Also no wearing masks other than buses or just recently in corridors. Full classes spread easily. That's why the numbers are rising. They won't close schools until its too late like everything else.... If done now a mix of pt and home learning would work but not holding my breath. I can't say to school he's got Covid because although he's had a bit of a temperature for a week it hasn't met the threshold for getting a test.

Crystalknobs · 20/09/2020 17:36

Bulblasagne I was just going to ask the same question- what difference will shutting places at 10pm make ? Is the virus inactive after 10pm ? What time does it become active again?

payens · 20/09/2020 17:45

Well, madame blobby, seems you think it's ok for people to die, tell that to my daughter a front line NHS doctor trying to save people. 2nd lock down inevitable.

Hushhush89 · 20/09/2020 17:48

It's good that Wales have done that, but where my 2 girls go there is no social distancing going on in year groups. 60 kids can mix together at break times and the all sit next to each other in class.

lockeddownandcrazy · 20/09/2020 17:51

Enforce masks and social distancing would be a good start - like no excuses. No mask no entry. That is what happens else where. Real enforcement for not socially distancing.

lyralalala · 20/09/2020 17:51

Surely it's obviously about the amount of time people spend out mixing?

Yes the virus is still active after 10pm, but 2 hours less mingling means 2 hours less exposure. Also less hours drinking will likely mean less breaking of social distancing by drunk people.

It's thinning people out without bluntly closing pubs

A local restaurant, that gives people 2 hours with their table, will lose their 9pm sitting if they have to close at 10pm. That's potentially 25-40 less people in their place per evening.

I'm really not looking forward to the prospect losing the school holidays to lockdown Sad.

lockeddownandcrazy · 20/09/2020 17:58

@MandyGalbandi what if you live a mile from a county border and work and the kids school are the other side? a friend of mine lives less than a mile from a county join but she could go 50 miles the other way and still be in the county
