to ask you how to stave off my cold?

Temp is normal but have the typical scratchy throat I get before I get a cold. Anything I can do now to prevent it from getting a lot worse? Single mum to a toddler and not sure I can cope with a mega cold right now!

Eat well. Lots of fresh fruit and veg. No processed food or sugar. And rest as much as you can (stick the TV on for toddler).

Have orange juice, peppers, sauerkraut. I always load up on stuff with lots of vitimin c in when I feel a cold coming on

BrigitsBigKnickers · 18/09/2020 13:30

Vitamin C and echinacea. Always seems to work for me.

AudTheDeepMinded · 18/09/2020 13:30

Fellow Mum at school this morning was saying how great bee propolis is for stopping colds. I have no direct evidence that this is the case though!

AudTheDeepMinded · 18/09/2020 13:31

@Lockheart your link does something weird!

Rassy · 18/09/2020 13:31

First Defence is great if used at first signs of cold. Many a cold I have managed to stave off

eurochick · 18/09/2020 13:31

Shove some First Defence up your nose and take a 1000mg vit c.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 18/09/2020 13:32

First Defence. Can buy it in most shops.

DressingGownofDoom · 18/09/2020 13:33

Can you really stave off a cold? Nothing has ever worked for me. Just sit back and feel the hurt Gin

Delatron · 18/09/2020 13:37

First Defence has worked twice for me over the past month. Scratchy throat over night, take this for two days and it disappeared very quickly with no other symptoms. You have to be quick though.
Then I gargle with echinacea! Take vitamin c and zinc lozenges but I think the jury is out on those. Can’t hurt though!

I actually heard an expert saying you can use First Defence preventatively if you’re going on a plane or public transport.

lasangoles · 18/09/2020 13:40

Never heard of first defence! Thank you! Meant to be going camping tonight! Car is packed. Just me and my son in a private field but would be gutted to feel shitty the whole time.

@audthedeepminded think it's a not so subtle dig telling me to use Google. However Google is a minefield and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to ask real people on here to see if anything actually works!

It does exactly what it is meant to do.

unimaginativeusernamehere · 18/09/2020 15:12

Vitamin C and echinacea, lots of water and rest if possible

rogueantimatter · 18/09/2020 15:15

Have as many hot drinks as possible.
Take 1000mg of vitamin C 3 or 4 times a day.
And a lot of zinc, but only with food.
Chew a raw clove of garlic if you can stand to.
Sambucol is good.
Keep your nose and neck warm.
Lemon and ginger are good too.
Spicy foods are good for colds.

yolio · 18/09/2020 15:18

Anti histamine tab. Stops the stuffy nose. Strepsils throat spray for the scratch throat.

If you take alcohol, a hot whiskey with honey and lemon before bed.

Paracetemol a couple of times a day.

I don't think there is anything that can stop the progression of a cold, but there are ways to make it a teeny bit more pleasant lol!

Auridon4life · 18/09/2020 15:49

Home made garlic bread the stronger the better !

jb2941 · 18/09/2020 15:57

My son has had a cold this week as had my daughter and partner. I bought vicks first defence. Hoping it will work. Meant to stop the cold virus before it gets worse!

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/09/2020 16:13

zinc

NameChange84 · 18/09/2020 16:20

First Defence is OUTSTANDING. I was sick as a dog at a Wedding Rehearsal that I couldn’t get out of, nipped straight to Boots and bought some and was absolutely fine at the wedding the next day. Unbelievable really!

If you aren’t veggie boil up some chicken bones and make a good old fashioned chicken soup aka Jewish Grandmother’s Penicillin (lots of recipes online) y- scientifically proven to boost your white blood cells and fight a cold. Zinc lozenges and/or Vitamin C and Zinc tablets too. Try and get as much sleep as you can tonight.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 18/09/2020 16:22
  • Night Nurse is the best (but may knock you out)
  • drink a Berocca once a day
  • gargle salt water
  • take a warm bath with Epsom salts
  • eat oranges, have vegetables for dinner in a fresh lemon, garlic and ginger dressing/sauce
  • rest!

Not all of those will be possible if you're camping, but hopefully something helps. Enjoy your trip, hope you feel better.

TwilightSkies · 18/09/2020 16:22

Hot water and fresh ginger.
SLEEP when possible.
Hot baths and fresh air.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 18/09/2020 16:32

I found using the antiseptic throat spray made my throat more dry and irritated. Sips of cold milk was way more soothing.

Twofurrycatsagain · 18/09/2020 17:00

Definitely, definitely first defence. Usually it will stop a cold in it's tracks. If it doesn't it seems to shorten it. Can't recommend it enough.

Ch0colatecake · 18/09/2020 17:16

lasangoles put some salt in warm water and gargle a few times a day and before bed. Half glass water and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
