Hi all

So my friend Was texting the other day & really wanted to watch a documentary that’s only available on Netflix. I offered my log in details so she could watch it.
Now found out via texting back n forth that she’s been on it every night since, it doesn’t stop me watching it but I just thinking how cheeky! When I only offered it her to watch 1 thing.

AIBU?

By the way I know there’s more pressing things going on in life just wanted another opinion.

I would’ve shared my login details with my parents if my sister living in Australia hadn’t got there first. With the different time zones it’s unlikely they’d be watching at the same time. My brother in law shares his with my in-laws, again because my husband didn’t offer first, but we absolutely would have done. I see no problem with it as long as it hasn’t interrupted your viewing it. As it is a small amount per month it wouldn’t be big issue to me but I can understand if you think it’s a bit cheeky. Presumably you wouldn’t have really noticed otherwise unless you’d checked or she told you though, so does it really matter?

I'm amazed by all these people just sharing their Netflix with others outside their household. You have all signed up to T&C which say they are only for use by members of the same household or some such wording. So you are breaking the contract you have with Netflix. Maybe you don't feel guilty as they are a big company but as a PP pointed out, if everyone did this your subscription price would go up.

So OP, I would just say to your friend that as a one-off you didn't mind but as it's against the contract you aren't comfortable with her using it regularly so to stop. If she doesn't, you change the password.

Yanbu its cheeky and Netflix may suspend your account for breaking the t&cs. If she likes it that much she should get her own account

This thread is an eye opener.

YANBU, she should get her own account. It’s more expensive for the people who pay because of freeloaders like her (and lots of pps).

Personally I havent for years watched live TV or recorded live TV just watch on demand stuff through Netflix and Prime.

Together they cost me just a little bit more than the TV licence. So I no longer pay my TV licence because I dont fit the criteria for needing one. Yet I get so much more, better content and with prime next day delivery pays for itself really

@minipie

I think this is really cheeky! It doesn’t harm you directly but if loads of people did this then Netflix subscribers would go down and the subscription costs would go up. (or content would get worse).

Netflix is worth 225 billion dollars and you are allowed to have more than one user if you are not on the basic plan. They are well aware that people share logins and could easily prevent this by not allowing more than 1 or 2 IP addresses to use an account, but they don't so probably aren't that bothered as probably not huge numbers of people giving their log ins to all and sundry.

Tell her you're downgrading it to save money and now can only have one screen. I stuck with one in my house because I just know DD will let her mates on it!

I think it's CFer territory. Giving something for one time use doesnt not mean it's an open invitation to use whenever they feel like it. Especially without asking.

Snoringferret · 16/09/2020 23:52

I honestly don't understand why you would stop her? It doesn't cost you anymore and I'm sure she'd share something with you.

I wouldn't think twice if a friend used mine. Why would you have one just sitting there and not let her use it.

So weird.

Netflix know this happens and they could easily stop it if it didn't work for them.

I dont think it's rude at all. I have two others that use my Netflix. Doesn't bother me, I can still watch what I want, I don't even notice them using it. Just change your password if it bothers you so much, or say you have someone else wanting to use it and there's no space left.

I hardly ever watch tv..... it is not worth having the licence, really. But the TV license people are such bullying bastards.. They harass and hound people. The sooner BBC is self funded, the better.

I give my mate my log in for anything she wants, because she's my mate and I'm already paying so she can get the benefit too.

But that's our friendship, it's based on kindness and generosity, I cook for her and her kids, she has a daughter a couple years older than mine she passes on clothes, I bake and drop stuff off (Aunty craving makes the best chocolate muffins apparently).

If I could change one thing about the world it would be for people to be more generous to others. The world would be so much better for it.

What @cravingthelook said.
Just be nice to people.
If you have 4 log ins, what is the point in 3 of them not being used ? Confused
If Netflix weren't happy with the situation, they'd have found a way of preventing it / making it difficult a long time ago, but no, they sell the package to you as a '4 person log in', so why wouldn't you share the love and let 4 people use it ?

It is cheeky of her, you offered for her to use it once, then she kept using it. Kind of like the people you offer the bag of crisps to, expecting them to take one, but they take a huge handful instead. That being said, I keep thinking but it's her friend! So I myself would probably leave it and enjoy chatting Netflix stuff with her!

How long has your 'friend' been doing this? Netflix offers the first 3 months free so you should do the same. If she refuses to pay half of your bill after that, cut her off and take her to the small claims court.

I give my details away all the time,
I share my netflix account with my auntie and nice (different houses) and my britbox account with a friend and my Disney+ with two other friends ... Who cares, I pay anyway, so whats the difference

Yes, she’s being cheeky. You offered as a one off, not to give her unlimited free access. If she’d asked to watch a couple of other extra things you might have said yes, but just carry on regardless is cheeky. She’s not offering to go halves with you, is she? Log her out and change the password.

Yes I think it is cheeky but if it did not effect us watching it then no I would not actually be bothered really.

What harm is she doing? My DD as a teen used her friend's account for ages but then it impinged in what her family could watch so we got our own. Share and share alike, I say!

You can tell the people in the comments who use other people’s log ins. As someone who pays for Netflix and Disney plus this is something that would bother me. Why should I pay for something and let other people use it for free? Even if I have a spare profile I would be inclined to let my mum use it over CF who just assumes it’s ok to keep using it without asking.

Honestly she’s being cheeky. She asked for the log in to watch one program and now assumes she is free to keep using it whenever she likes. If she had asked or you had offered it would be different. It’s hardly an expensive service and unless she’s struggling financially then she can pay if she really wants it.

My advice would be to change the password and if she asks just say you were having issues so had to change the password. If she asks for the new password either tell her no or give her the wrong password and feign Ignorance when she can’t log in.

What sort of cheapskate can't be bothered to pay for their own Netflix account? The cheapest is like £6 a month. I'd change the password and say you decided you don't need it anymore

Report
AlwaysLatte · 17/09/2020 00:41

Let her finish watching the series then change the password - it she's really tight for money (and you've got more sign in options than you usually use) and she's a good friend, let her carry on, but with her own profile.

Similar thing happened to me but I was a teenager. A friend who I hadn’t had contact for ages (moved to another sixth form) messaged me out of the blue asking me if I had sky movies. I was excited as I thought she wanted to come round to watch a movie with me. I was feeling very low in sixth form, no friends, nan just died etc. So I said yes I have sky movies. She’s then like oh that’s so great, there’s this movie I really want to see, can I use your sky? I’m like I don’t think so, not sure. She was practically begging me saying, oh it will only take a few minutes to make an account. I really have to see this movie. It has to be today as they’re only showing it today. I’m still hesitant. She said she will make the account herself so I agreed Blush. She was asking me for all my family’s personal details to apply and made me give her the sky card number. I sort of realise it was wrong as it was happening. I kept saying please don’t tell my parents and she said don’t worry they won’t find out. As soon as she created the account I knew immediately it was wrong. I said you’re getting this for free and she’s like thank you so much and I’ll pay you in chocolate. I never did receive the chocolate.
Then later that year she returned back to my school after leaving her old sixth form. I asked her about the sky and she tells me that she’s been using it all this time watching wrestling and other shows!! I bet even her family was using it. I told her can you stop using my sky and she’s like no I’m using it to watch all these shows...don’t worry your parents won’t find out. Anyway, they did as they got an email about someone using our sky and asked me about it. They went ballistic and I had to message her to cancel it and give her password so we could change it. My brother told me to message her that we will contact the police if she didn’t as it was stealing. She said to me I stopped watching it ages ago because you told me to stop using it, it would be pretty rude not to. I highly doubt that was true.

I was really stupid for giving it to her in the first place I admit. But she shouldn’t have taken advantage of me and I would never in my wildest dreams asked people for their account. I don’t have Netflix but a few of my friends do. Not one have I asked them to use their account. I just think that’s cheeky...they’re paying all this money every month whilst you’re getting it for free and not contributing!
