Thanks to the fab PatricksRum for fighting against racism we've got our own board here

Look for black mumsnetters 👍🏿

OP posts:
Codexdivinchi · 16/09/2020 18:34

Well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I understand why other minorities want a safe space and I said so on one of the other threads.

However Patricksrum had to specifically start threads provoking this conversation about this and really got so much shit thrown at her. The threads were not easy to read and she was really brave poking the hornets nest by herself. It could have gone either way to be honest - a ban for being ‘goady’ which she was constantly accused off OR some one at MNHQ listened.

So instead of saying ‘well where are our minority boards’ on a thread specifically to let people know there is now a black Mumsnet section - start your own threads and do the same. You can’t expect one poster to fight for everybody. BAME people all have very different experiences. That’s the whole point.

If there is a need for what ever board it looks like MN will listen and many posters will support you.

GoGadgetGo · 16/09/2020 18:35

yep a space for idiots and a space for the non.

I'm jumping to the non.

Quaagars · 16/09/2020 18:35

Nope, not backwards - I think it's a huge step forward personally
Giving everyone an equal voice, their own space if they want it and nobody's forcing anyone anywhere, you don't have to post on it if you don't want to and can still post anywhere you like.

EDSGFC · 16/09/2020 18:36

But it seems op has won this weird new regressive section of the forum battle. With mainly support from white people judging by the responses.

This is what made me uncomfortable. There were other black posters on the threads saying they didn't want it being shouted down by white people - that's just wrong to me.

And I can't see anywhere where MN counted the fors and against and worked out how many black posters voted for it - there were certainly plenty of posters declaring they were white voting for it but I don't think their voices should have counteracted black people saying no.

Can i ask if you have read the threads by PatricksRum asking for a black mumsnetter forum?

I only ask because you seem to be relying on the word of LastTrainEast that this was said in the threads.

I've read through the threads and I can't see where it says white people are excluded.

Sorry, I don't mean this as goady.

Sanitisethat · 16/09/2020 18:38

Safe spaces are not segregation.

It isn’t segregation for women to want women-only spaces. It isn’t segregation for gay people to want gay bars. It isn’t segregation for welsh male voice choirs to only have male voices. It isn’t segregation to have a ‘ladies in finance’ networking organisation. It isn’t segregation to have BAME working groups in political parties.

Any group has a right to seek out spaces where they can share their experiences with other groups who share the same background as them. This is not a new, controversial or unusual thing. My work has twenty different committees - a women’s network, an LGBT network, a BAME network, a parents’ network. None of this is remotely comparable to segregation.

Segregation was a specific act of oppression forced upon Black people by white people for the specific purpose of limiting their power, reducing their opportunities, preventing them from accessing wealth and depriving them of a range of basic civil liberties. It was one of the most unjustifiable atrocities ever wrought on any group of people in the history of the world.

So please, just stop. Stop watering it down and claiming you’re a victim of segregation thanks to the mere existence of a board which doesn’t cater to your particular experience. Stop acting as if this board sets a new and dangerous precedent when mumsnet is filled with specific boards catering to different groups already, none of which are the cause of any controversy whatsoever. Stop with this painful ignorance and entitlement.

StormzyInaDCup · 16/09/2020 18:38

Why do we need our own white board?
The main boards are white by default, you wouldn't get much specifically tailored advice on black issues, just like Scotsnet.

How do you know the main users are white? Or are you assuming?

Just what exactly is it that everyone is so loudly against black people being able to talk freely amongst themselves like others do, Craicsnte/Scotsnet etc - so why can't they have a voice too? Fair point. Imo it is divisive to have a group for one ethnic minority only and not all.
The screenshot of yours too - I've been on the threads, it's absolutely rubbish to say that no white people allowed at all.
If that's how people are interpreting it, maybe think about why?
have you been on every thread? Or is that poster just lying then?

it was said no making it all about me me me, shouting down, minimising etc but it is a black person's group for black people. Judging by past discussions, the group may have been made to concede that they can't have everything they asked for.. Does that mean the ethos changed? No is your answer.

I don't need to ask myself why I feel like this. I am entitled to my opinion because I experience racism, I see it affect my family and friends.. I get to have a say because I can't just be dismissed as a racist troll as easily as white people on here are being. It's wrong to segregate, it's a step back and a woke reaction.

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 18:40

@Quaagars

This thread just proves we need a space space

It really does, highlights it beautifully Sad Flowers

Flowers

Ah well at least MNHQ have further evidence it was needed!

StormzyInaDCup · 16/09/2020 18:40

@minou123 thanks for that. I haven't and I was going by that one post. I will go and read them, objectively.

Absolutely.

So we now have a little section of mn where only ‘black experiences’ (like curry goat and curly hair Hmm) will be kept away from all the other people. Mainly voted for...by white people.

I’ve had a look on the board, and quite frankly I wouldn’t have even blinked at any of those topics being on the ‘feeding the world’ or ‘style and beauty’ sections. Completely pointless.

And as for needing a ‘safe space’ on bloody mn Hmm

Owlypants · 16/09/2020 18:45

Fuck me! Dropped in to offer a half dead house plant from B&Q(as you do when someone gets their own place) and this thread is turning nasty. There are plenty of sub groups on mumsnet why pick on this one? Anyway... @Marg33t Flowers take these to new board please and water them. There isn't a cheese plant emoji.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 16/09/2020 18:46

Ugh white people 🙄

I’m white. And glad there is a place for black Mumsnetters and therefore we can only benefit too because by understanding others’ experiences we better understand how we can cease to be part of the problem.

BusyEvenForBee · 16/09/2020 18:47

There would be massive 'racism' outcry if 'white middle class' section was created.

I always thought if somebody opened let's sat African Hair thread the responses would come from black people. When I read any topic I never wonder what race or colour are people there. Content is what important.

Sad that black ladies do not feel safe on the forum without having their own section. But do think it is extreme.

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 18:47

Why do you assume BMN has been created to spare your eyes from looking at topics like curry goat and curly hair? Why do you think this is about you?

BadBanana · 16/09/2020 18:47

‘Ugh white people 🙄

I’m white.’

Yeah, pretty much all of you cheering on this ‘othering’ of us are.

Funny that.

I've read through the threads and I can't see where it says white people are excluded.

Sorry, I don't mean this as goady.

I think some people might be getting confused.

PatricksRum started a thread asking for ideas for topics and tried to exclude white people from the thread, not the new topic.

The wording went something like

"Black people of Mumsnet - not white people. Ideas for a black topic".

The thread was deleted.

Jux · 16/09/2020 18:48

Oh you got it! Well done; that was quite a rough thread and you were so nice all the way through Star

FlatScreenTV01 · 16/09/2020 18:48

How do you know the people posting will be Black? 😂😂😂

Codexdivinchi · 16/09/2020 18:49

Tbh I think they should have stood to highlight how nasty they got but I suppose MN didn’t want to have evidence of the racism on the boards.

However - it you honestly ‘can’t get’ why black people want a space for them selves - just scroll over the threads because if you don’t get it now - you never will.

Every single post you make really does show you in a bad light. Your embarrassing yourself

OnceUponAThimble · 16/09/2020 18:49

The language you use such as 'safe' space implies that you don't view MN as a 'safe' space to post as a black person. Is that correct?

BadBanana · 16/09/2020 18:50

@Havaiana I’m black, can’t you read? I am saying I would think nothing of posting those topics on the normal mn sections, why not? Only people that are interested/knowledgable will mainly answer.

Don’t worry, all the black people objecting to this have been completely ignored.

Staffy1 · 16/09/2020 18:50

@Sexnotgender

Firstly how do you know what race people are? And secondly it just feels a bit like apartheid, ie blacks only and whites only and segregation, which of course was frowned upon massively, but now it's ok? . And thirdly, what about all the other races. It just feels a bit racist. Noone of any other race can join in? No other race can have their own area?

Apartheid? Are you for real?

Yes we’re forcing the black people on here into their own section and controlling what they do.

I’m off to build a township this afternoon for them too.

No, but you are excluding non-black people. It does work both ways you know.
FirstOfficerDouglas · 16/09/2020 18:50

Why do you assume BMN has been created to spare your eyes from looking at topics like curry goat and curly hair? Why do you think this is about you? - Was not the original comment meant to be ironic??

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 18:50

@OnceUponAThimble not going to answer if you're American then? So why parody an American accent here?
