To think you should clean things before you sell them?

I’m in the market for a second hand fridge! Some of the ones I’ve seen are DISGUSTINGLY dirty!

‘£50, full working, needs a clean’

AIBU to think even if you’re selling an appliance or even giving it away for free, it’s common decency to clean it a bit first?

YANBU. People are so gross.

SwanShaped · 12/09/2020 15:26

Yes! When people sell something and says ‘needs a quick clean’ i never buy it. Because I think if you can’t be bothered to clean something to sell it then you probably haven’t looked after it properly

SideAfries · 12/09/2020 15:27

@RubyTheRockingHorse, yep! I’m no cleaning freak but I think if I was expecting someone to pay me for something I couldn’t live with myself if they opened the door to a years worth of grime! Grim!

Alloftheboys · 12/09/2020 15:27

It’s when they say “slide/bike/whatever just needs a quick wipe over”
Well give it a quick wipe over before you sell it you filth bucket!

Soubriquet · 12/09/2020 15:27

Depends. If it genuinely just needs a quick clean and it’s cheap, then yeah I don’t mind

If it’s filthy, or really expensive then no as I think this is cheeky.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 12/09/2020 15:28

Yes - you're not wrong. Reminds me of when I was first renting a flat after I started work. We asked the landlord for a new fridge. The one he bought us had clearly just been procured second hand place as it was filthy. He also didn't clean it before he gave it to us !

SideAfries · 12/09/2020 15:28

@SwanShaped Yes same! Or when it’s in on a grubby looking carpet (eg not been hoovered for 9 months) with loads of shit around it! 😂 no, thanks!

OP posts:
SideAfries · 12/09/2020 15:29

@Alloftheboys filth bucket 😂😂😂 absolutely. Takes 2 seconds & your much more likely to sell it!

SideAfries · 12/09/2020 15:31

In fact, after looking at some of them I think I’m just gonna get a new one on the argos card! 😂🤢

I don’t know how people have the nerve to be so disgusting. I expect it now, and am shocked if the toy I buy secondhand doesn’t need a 24 hour soak in disinfectant.

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/09/2020 15:35

I actually wrote something similar to someone on Facebook once. It didn’t go down well 🤣
SideAfries · 12/09/2020 15:36

@justanotherneighinparadise I bought DD a small character play house thing at the car boot a few weeks ago, when I got it home I was greeted with a thick layer of fluff every where inside, including all the small intricate parts! Angry Had to get a cotton bud... & she charged me a fiver, cheeky cow.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 12/09/2020 15:52

YANBU, some people are shameless and, as you say, if it just "needs a quick wipe over" then why don't they bloody well do it themselves before trying to sell it Confused

Alloftheboys · 12/09/2020 15:55

@justanotherneighinparadise I really have to bite my tongue when it comes to some of the shit that people try and flog on Facebook.

iklboo · 12/09/2020 16:02

With you all the way here, everyone. If it 'could do with a clean' just clean it before you sell it, manky person.

RubyTheRockingHorse · 12/09/2020 16:13

We got our pushchair for £50 from eBay. Was in great condition and came free with used tissues stuffed in the pockets 🤢. The cheeky git who sold it to me was all irked because he didn't get more for it, (I won it at auction and there wasn't much interest). I had to absolutely scrub and disinfect the thing, till I actually thought I'd rubbed off all the flame proof coating. We bought a new buggy recently as DS is too big for the pushchair now and I have to say I insisted on new this time.

Tiredmum100 · 12/09/2020 16:16

I hate it when I see things listed as needing a good clean. I mean how lazy are they. I Would never buy something that was stinking dirty. Nor would I sell it. I clean everything before I sell it.

LadyofTheManners · 12/09/2020 16:18

I bought a washing machine just before lockdown as mine went bang. It was to get me by, £50.
Picked it up and it was truly gross. Truly disgusting. The front looked fine. The soap draw was thick with black gunk. The rubber inside was just the most disgusting thing I've seen.
Washed it all out (took a whole bottle of bleach).
It then stopped working after a week. I was livid and it's a good job I don't drive or I would've dumped it back at the slobby scummy cows house. Never been so cross.
I text her and she denied all knowledge.

Emeraldshamrock · 12/09/2020 16:21

Yanbu. It is disgusting.

Splellow · 12/09/2020 16:21

I bought a pair of trousers on eBay a few years ago and they had clearly been worn for some time with no underwear 🤮

emelsie · 12/09/2020 16:21

Even if I'm giving stuff away free on Facebook market I give it a wipe over at the least with an antibacterial wipe or something , I would be embarrassed to hand over some of the stuff I see on there.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 12/09/2020 16:21

I think if you’re getting a fridge for free, you’ve got a damn cheek to moan that it isn’t clean. Are you one of those people who expects posters in Freecycle to deliver?

unimaginativeusernamehere · 12/09/2020 16:22

Yanbu. I was giving away a 3 piece leather suite to a friends dad and was mortified that I hadn't been able to clean it before he collected as I ended up going in for last minute surgery.
I asked my friend to apologise at least 3 times

RubyTheRockingHorse · 12/09/2020 16:23

Who is getting a fridge for free?
JeanneFrench · 12/09/2020 16:25

With COVID, the platforms selling these items like Wallapop or Vinted or whatever should not be allowing people to list uncleaned items, particularly something like a fridge. Something like garden furniture I can maybe understand. Anything that comes from inside a house, no.
