I’m in the market for a second hand fridge! Some of the ones I’ve seen are DISGUSTINGLY dirty!

‘£50, full working, needs a clean’

AIBU to think even if you’re selling an appliance or even giving it away for free, it’s common decency to clean it a bit first?

Who is getting a fridge for free?

Did you miss this?

Yes absolutely. I bought a kids coat off ebay, it arrived with tomato seeds all in the collar from where the kid before had obviously been eating in it. I mean, how hard would it have been to stick it in a wash?!

RubyTheRockingHorse · 12/09/2020 16:29

Ah I see! Yes, I forgot about that part of the op.

OP isn't getting one for free though. I also think common decency does mean you wouldn't give away a filthy fridge. Because you actually could spend money having it taken away if you just want rid of it. Giving it to a private party who wants to use it, you wouldn't give them one which is really dirty. Or at least, I wouldn't.

@StillCoughingandLaughing

I think if you’re getting a fridge for free, you’ve got a damn cheek to moan that it isn’t clean. Are you one of those people who expects posters in Freecycle to deliver?

Nope! Those people annoys me as well! Looking for free items (enter sob story) *Must be grey sofa, specific coffee table’ etc. Cheeky!

Are you one of those people who lists a disgusting dirty fridge for £50? Wink

Puts me off buying 2nd hand tbh.
Recently bought something for my baby, soo dirty I would be embarrassed giving /selling something to someone in that condition. Especially to be used by a newborn.

This was a personal favourite of mine

To think you should clean things before you sell them?
CustardySergeant · 12/09/2020 16:40

I would always make sure anything I was selling or giving to someone was clean. I treat others as I would wish to be treated.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 12/09/2020 16:43

Cleaning a family fridge properly is a hard work that can take a couple of hours. If I went to that much trouble before disposing of it, I would definitely want some money for it i.e. would not offer it for free. Conversely, if I got a fridge for free I wouldn't mind cleaning it myself.

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/09/2020 16:58

Even if I’m giving something away for free I clean it first! My god why does giving something away for free mean that the thing has to be filthy? The two don’t have to go hand in hand 🙄

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/09/2020 17:00

Why would anyone let their fridge get that disgusting in the first place so that cleaning it would take hours? That alone speaks volumes about the people getting criticised.

gumball37 · 12/09/2020 17:26

I'm gonna say no.

Because no one is making you buy a dirty secondhand item. If someone wants rid of it but doesn't want to clean it... Why not sell as is. Someone might think the cleaning is worth the price.

That said... I wouldn't buy nor sell a dirty item

StillCoughingandLaughing · 12/09/2020 18:16

Nah... I’ll be using my disgusting dirty fridge until it conks out Wink

My god why does giving something away for free mean that the thing has to be filthy? The two don’t have to go hand in hand 🙄

Of course it doesn’t have to be. You’re being ridiculous. I just wouldn’t spend an hour scrubbing out a fridge for someone else to get the benefit.

seven201 · 12/09/2020 18:38

I think it's alright to just give a brief wipe and be upfront that it needs a proper clean as long as the price reflects that. I wouldn't buy anything that stated it needed cleaning personally though. I gave away a buggy recently and gave it a quick hoover and the hood a wipe but I definitely wasn't going to bother with scrubbing wheels etc.

HamRadio · 12/09/2020 18:57

My absolute favourite are the people who try to sell or give away their rubbish because they can’t be arsed disposing of it properly.

It’s a pile of broken boxes! Just take them to the dump!

You’re last paragraph is interesting. Do you would only clean your own filth off an item if you were gaining monetarily from it?
