To ask if there's something I'm missing about the allegedly "controversial" Diversity performance

GlummyMcGlummerson · 10/09/2020 22:42

Diversity performed on Britain's Got Talent, a performance which incorporated a message about BLM. Their performance, as usual, was incredible and sent out some great messages. The video is below.

It's had 10,000 complaints. Why?! am I missing something? Did someone's nipple pop out or something? What is the basis of people's complaints? The only reason I can think is that some people (probably because they're part of the problem) don't like it when others point out that there's racism in the world? Boo hoo to them

I thought it was great. #TeamDiversity

Same. I was completely unaware of it until just now. I watched it and I thought it was really powerful. I can’t see anything to complain about, and it’s in no way unsuitable for children.

I also wondered at first whether the complainers actually watched it, although I suspect that racism would easily account for the spurious concern for children’s sensitivities etc.

steemtranes · 11/09/2020 00:58

@HardStare

Straven my links were for those who claim it never happens here, not how regularly it happens. In the last 10 years 13 who died in custody were black.
Just out of curiosity, how many who died in custody were white?
Straven123 · 11/09/2020 01:03

I think I read there are 3 guns for every us citizen. I've lived there it's a different world. Our racism stems from colonialism , no better, but without guns quite different.

MeridaTheBold · 11/09/2020 01:05

Oh please, not a soul would admit to that
This place only works if we trust to a certain extent exception being obvious gfs and trolls posters are who they say they are, they're posting in good faith and their opinions are genuine. You seem to think the people who complained are liars and on here. I'd find it unlikely they were both.
The flurry of complaints had all the hallmarks of a right-wing social media campaign.

FrenchOrGreek · 11/09/2020 01:06

It's up to me to give direction to my children, not Ashley Banjo. If I want my kids to be informed about issues, I will arrange that. If I want my kids to be entertained then I will arrange that as well. It's my decision to inform my children about race or political issues at my time at a pace of my choosing, not Ashley Banjo's.
That's why it's inappropriate. Not the message itself.

Yes I'm sure Ashley Banjo set out this routine to personally target your kids.

If you're THAT passionate about controlling every aspect of what your children take in (BTW I can assure you that is a terrible approach to parenting) I suggest watching everything before you let your kids watch it. Because you don't know what is going to be on the likes of BGT really do you? Wether it's a comedian making sexist jokes, dancers prancing round in thongs or a statement against one of the world's biggest problems. Same goes for anything on CBBC, CBeebies, Blue Peter etc. Often they bring up important issues. I also suggest you go to school and sit in the classrooms with them, just in case someone like me pops along and tells them about endangered animals or birds getting caught in rubbish that's in the sea. Or, if they're older, homophobia or ableism, or even drug addiction.

I don't get what's offensive either
I thought it was beautiful and powerful
It's not even wholly about black lives matter. It's about how coronavirus has changed things. There is comment on materialism and lack of social connection as well as racism in there.
It isn't a gratuitous shocking representation of George Floyd's murder it's an artistic one. It's very stylised not like watching the actual footage.
I don't see it as unsuitable for prime time TV at all. I'm happy to show it to my kids but then again we have already had a lot of discussion about racism and BLM. Y8 DD had a lockdown learning module on it.
The message is a good one and the medium is beautiful.

People who think racism and police brutality is a US issue are completely deluded. Black people in the UK die in custody twice as often as white people or any other ethnic minority. That is a fact. Sheku Bayoh, Sean Rigg, Mike Powell, Leon Briggs, Christopher alder, Kingsley Burrell, Olaseni Lewis, Joy Gardner just off the top of my head.
Read the Angiolini review if you don't believe this is true of the Uk today.

You're clearly incapable of thinking for yourself. You're so locked into a way of thinking that I'm wasting my time.
You didn't even bother to consider another point of view before posting.
I'm not wasting my time or energy on someone so one-track minded.

I literally can't see "another viewpoint" hence my post.

I've yet to see a decent reason to complain about this. "won't someone think of the children" is not a good reason. Diversity aren't to know that there are ridiculously over protective parents out there who's kids must only ever be subjected to the fluff and the trivial on TV

HardStare · 11/09/2020 02:09

steem 141. Black people are more than twice as likely to die in police custody if you look at how much of the population is black but white people are 25% more likely to die in custody based on number of arrests. Only 3% of UK is black.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/09/2020 02:10

YANBU OP. Racism, as uncomfortable as it is, is alive and well kicking in our society.Sad. That is what is really controversial. Dance is well, just dance.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 11/09/2020 02:11

Just a bunch of always offended snowflakes complaining, I thought it was a beautiful performance.

FrenchOrGreek · 11/09/2020 02:20

"there are ridiculously over protective parents out there who's kids must only ever be subjected to the fluff and the trivial on TV"

You're doing it again! Yet you don't see it.
Your predilections, assumptions and unconscious (maybe conscious in your case) bias is astounding.

Why oh why am I wasting my time? Your biases are set and won't change.

bettsbattenburg · 11/09/2020 02:42

So people complain about this kind of thing disrupting their cosy evenings viewing but then watch soaps which also bring hard hitting social issues into their homes ? Racism and double standards, who'd have thought there would be people like that.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 11/09/2020 02:53

Wow that performance is incredible!! Genius. What's not to love???❤️

liverbird10 · 11/09/2020 02:55

10,000 idiots.

Me not agreeing with you isn't a "bias". I simply pointed out that it's not your god given right to dictate what is on TV based on YOUR personal choices and it's impossible to police what our children are exposed to. I'm beginning to think I've touched a nerve

I usually am a ‘white snowflake’ but thought this was pretty good.

It was not saying anything controversial.

FrenchOrGreek · 11/09/2020 03:24

You're just not getting it. You really need to check your privilege.

RedRumTheHorse · 11/09/2020 03:31

@SpecialWGM a toddler wouldn't understand the dance even if they watched it.

AfolMummy · 11/09/2020 03:44

No one forced viewers to watch. You could have just switched channels to make a point. Its a shame as I thought the outstanding performance would make us British folk proud that we have such creative & talented performers. I have a feeling they're going to tread the same path many British ethnic minority actors have had to follow and find more success in the US. So much fine talent lost to our nation.

I also laughed at some of the bigoted commentary on SM saying that they are not diverse as "only have 5 white people in it" yet I remember the days when the same type of folks objected to having 3 black footballers in the England Team as it made it "too diverse". 🙄

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 11/09/2020 05:22

Although I didn’t watch the programme I’m very much into freedom of expression in the arts. I think as soon as you try and stifle an artist to say what their creativity can express you are on a slippery slope.

I think people are seeing a creative performance in the wrong light, Creativity is about expressing an artist’s feelings about a point. But art is a two way thing, the viewer or listener to a piece of art is just as entitled as the artist to have their own feelings about a piece of art that reaction is an integral part of the art.

As soon as we try an sensor someone’s reaction to a piece of art we are censoring art itself.

If some people felt “got at” by the piece then surely that is important to understand for anyone hoping the routine was going to educate. If someone feels treated unfairly then you are going to alienate them.

Unfortunately, the way the very important issue of racism has been portrayed by the media has come across as All black people have it really bad, they have no educational chances, all white people hate them, all white people have it so much better.

Every night in Itv there’s been a piece about racism. Where are their pieces on sexism, anti Semitism? All these issues are just as important, but I wonder if a dance troupe who were Jewish did a piece showing a German dragging a child and pretending to gas them live on stage, whether there would be a similar outcry over complaints.

It is important to educate people about racism but very careful consideration needs to be made on how not to alienate the people you are trying to educate. At the moment It seems there’s too much anger flying around to do this.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 11/09/2020 05:23

Censor not sensor!!! Fucking hell

3billboardsoutsidebarnsley · 11/09/2020 05:33

BGT is light entertainment. Soaps are also light entertainment and shown at times when young children are often still up yet they all regularly cover important and difficult issues such as DV, murder, terminal illness etc. Not all light entertainment needs to be light and fluffy 100% of the time imo. Sometimes it can go deeper.

Hyperfish101 · 11/09/2020 05:36

Good grief. Poor souls having their light entertainment tarnished and feeling ‘got at’. Get over yourselves.
