To ask if there's something I'm missing about the allegedly "controversial" Diversity performance

Diversity performed on Britain's Got Talent, a performance which incorporated a message about BLM. Their performance, as usual, was incredible and sent out some great messages. The video is below.

It's had 10,000 complaints. Why?! am I missing something? Did someone's nipple pop out or something? What is the basis of people's complaints? The only reason I can think is that some people (probably because they're part of the problem) don't like it when others point out that there's racism in the world? Boo hoo to them

@AfolMummy this is so true. People need to just admit they don't want to hear it because they don't Care and they're racist

Or, a similar relevant situation and tragic death at the hands of the US police but it unfortunately doesn't fit your agenda. Got it

I wish you had, but you really haven’t. You’ve picked one piece of a dance performance to whinge about, you really don’t get it all. Not to worry though, most of us have the measure of you.

areyoubeingserviced · 16/09/2020 21:45

There are certain posters that it’s just not worth engaging with.
They are racists and when pulled up on their racist views they then engage in ‘whataboutery’. Little point in wasting time with them. Their racism is entrenched .

The whole Diversity dance story is simply a cynical attempt by elements of the right wing media to deflect attention from Covid, the breaking of international law etc.
The ‘baddies’are the BLM movement . If the public focus on Diversity’s dance, we won’t focus on the fuck ups by Johnson , Cummings , Gove et al.
Divide and rule

Ethelfleda · 16/09/2020 22:10

What’s worrying is that racist people don’t actually realise that they’re racist anymore.
So much harder to get through the heads of these people when they won’t believe they’re even racist in the first place!

LolaSmiles · 17/09/2020 17:44

Ofcom have dismissed the complaints and pointed out that only 4% of complaints were immediately after the broadcast, with the rest later and some up to a fortnight later after the Mail had ran over 20 pieces about it and other tabloids had been whipping up the gammons.

The best bit?
'It also noted that other performers on Britain’s Got Talent made reference to current affairs topics, such as the importance of environmentalism and responding to climate change, the impact of plastic waste on sea life and to animal welfare. These did not attract a similar number of complaints'

It's almost like those who claimed they just didn't like the dance and didn't think politics/social issues should interrupt their evening telly might just be full of shit.

Well, Lola, I am sure GOYHH and Jilly will be along soon to explain how they said all along that all those other performers should have made reference to George Floyd and BLM and stabbings and not just focussed on what was important to them Hmm

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/09/2020 19:15

'am sure GOYHH and Jilly will be along soon to explain how they said all along that all those other performers should have made reference to George Floyd and BLM and stabbings'

No no, I dont agree that climate change is comparable to a violent act. Luckily we live in a free country so I'm allowed a different opinion to 'ofcom'.

Oh lola, racial slurs are never OK. I'd have thought you'd know better the amount of times you've accused others of racism.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 17/09/2020 19:32

Good decision by Ofcom

Yep racists have turned very clever in 2020 and woven it into the system so that people can't even see when they're being racist!!

Why I don't actually think racism will ever end sadly

thedancingbear · 17/09/2020 20:04

Luckily we live in a free country so I'm allowed a different opinion to 'ofcom'.

Sigh. Round in circles all over again.

No-one is saying you can't harbour racist views. This isn't north Korea. What you don't have is an inalienable right not to be called out on them.

Also your 'free country' rhetoric doesn't appear to extend to black people complaining about racism. You have gone to enormous lengths to challenge their right to do this.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/09/2020 20:10

'No-one is saying you can't harbour racist views. This isn't north Korea. What you don't have is an inalienable right not to be called out on them.'

Oh pipe down Bear, your constant goading is ridiculous. I don't 'harbour racist views' but you carry on making shit up if it makes you feel good.

God, no my 'free country rhetoric' absolutely extends to black people! It absolutely doesn't extend to anyone using racial insults regardless of their skin colour. HTH.

HairyToity · 17/09/2020 20:13

I thought it was a great performance. I don't see what the fuss is about.

Merrymumoftwo · 17/09/2020 20:26

I thought the dance was brilliant. A way to raise a serious issue in a way children can connect to for those of us who do not experience this but want desperately for things to change. It told a story and began in a place I hope we get to explaining serious events in a way that was thought provoking and highly emotive. I am not black or BAME, I have witnessed and spoken up in situations but I have not lived with this day after day. I want my child to have a different world, one where people don’t live in fear because of hate

LolaSmiles · 17/09/2020 20:48

thedancingbear
I agree with you

I've asked MN what got me the deletion as I'm intrigued at the claim I'm using racial slurs in a post where I quoted a guardian article saying:

'It also noted that other performers on Britain’s Got Talent made reference to current affairs topics, such as the importance of environmentalism and responding to climate change, the impact of plastic waste on sea life and to animal welfare. These did not attract a similar number of complaints'

www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/sep/17/ofcom-dismisses-complaints-over-blm-dance-on-britains-got-talent

Then commented that Ofcom noted that 4% of the complaints were imemdiately after broadcast, the rest were up to a fortnight later and after the Mail ran 20 articles about it and others tabloids did the same and then musing over how it's highly likely that those claiming they only objected to the dance and the fact they didn't want their evening telly interrupted were probably full of sh!t (better not use a naughty word in case that gets some posters' backs up).

Its the same people who believe "all lives matter" but cant grasp the concept that all lives cant matter until black lives matter. The UK is racist whether you like it or not. (That doesn't mean everyone in the UK is racist), but if you think white privilege doesn't exist, you're ignoring it :)

Oh Waffle why are you so bothered if it's not true.

LolaSmiles · 17/09/2020 21:13

Waffle
You're making very little sense.

Many posters on this thread already acknowledge society is structured in a way that creates barriers to specific groups of society. Discussing systemic racism doesn't make it lose its meaning

I remember as a child some terms were used by adults that, rightly, are not considered acceptable. The beauty of life is we have a choice about whether to learn and reflect and aim for a better society, or whether we sit around reading the Daily Mail and firing off complaints to Ofcom because a group of BAME dancers had the audacity to produce a piece of art that interrupted our teatime telly.

Flower3411 · 17/09/2020 21:16

@wafflehartsnet why have you taken the time to comment on two threads about racism if you're not bothered about it? Strange really..
