Just a bit of fun. I always end up buying similar food items in my weekly shop. Occasionally I’ll try something new and it’s really nice and I’ll continue to buy it. For example last week I bought some balsamic chutney from Morrison’s- it was so good I’ve added it to most sandwich fillings yum 😋

Have you bought anything new recently which you’ve been really impressed with?

@TheClitterati - Morrison's 'The Best' Brinjal Pickle (aubergine) will blow your mind as a chutney, sadly only comes in small jars.

Lee Kum Kee "Chiu Chow Chilli Oil" is rather messy stuff but you could eat an old shoe slathered in it. Amazing on eggs / rice dishes and packs quite a punch.

Morrison's own Laksa Paste is also great, real depth of flavour - fry it off a bit, add chicken or veg stock, throw in noodles to cook and then add bean sprouts/ sugar snaps/ chicken or prawns/ tofu, whatever takes your fancy. In fact I'm hugely impressed by all of their own brand world food stuff.

All of the Portuguese Tart fiends, if you can get to Costco or someone can go on your behalf may I strongly suggest that you try their frozen ones.

BigSpringy · 13/09/2020 19:40

Where do I get the frozen almond croissants 🥐 from please?

I'm hiding this thread. It's best that I never know the answer to this Grin

demhalluk · 13/09/2020 19:55

Terry's white chocolate orange.

Apparently, they're rarer than hens' teeth. My daughter works in Morrisons and said they put 3 full boxes out for the shop opening today. All were sold by 10.30am. She was gutted.

VinylDetective · 13/09/2020 20:04

They sound vile. Any my Morrisons get in are completely safe from me.

PerditaNitt · 13/09/2020 20:20

This is a super thread.

I would add the Carlo’s sourdough pizza base in Aldi. This is not the one you roll out (which is a bit stodgy) but a ready rolled one in the refrigerated section. It is brilliant for a thin crust pizza and comes out super crispy. Fingers crossed they don’t discontinue it.

I also rate their milk chocolate with the pretzels. I can’t trust myself with it so rarely buy it!

I also prefer their light fever free knock-off (ridge valley) to really fever tree.

For anyone venturing into the world food aisles after reading this thread i would recommend the Maggis hot and sweet sauce. It has a really good kick and a touch of sweetness (without being super sweet like this sweet chilli sauce).

Waitrose extra thick Greek yoghurt. Not the low fat one. Unbelievably good. Have it daily with fruit for brekky. It beats the Yeo valley/collective hands down

RedPanda17 · 13/09/2020 20:36

Well, I've just eaten a whole packet of Jezykl classic biscuits, so thanks whoever recommended them 😁

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 13/09/2020 20:45

The gluten, and therefore wheat free Kikkoman tamari on the Free From shelf in Asda. The best soy sauce money can buy.

SunshineCake · 13/09/2020 21:17

I've also put a list in my phone of things to try when I make it out. Thanks all.

My newest discovery is M & S cucumber and mint salad dressing. Comes in a cute bottle for £1.50.

FenellaVelour · 14/09/2020 00:27

Oooh, Tiptree Hot Gooseberry Chutney is bloody marvellous, goes great with strong cheese in particular.

FenellaVelour · 14/09/2020 00:29

@sueelleker

Tesco frozen Portuguese tarts. Bloody lovely.*
I saw those, but the bag gave cooking instructions; I like mine cold, so do I cook and cool them, or can they just be thawed out?

I’d say cook and cool, otherwise I think they’ll just be soggy.
Haworthia · 14/09/2020 00:31

Sainsbury’s do a chickpea dhal in a tin, £1.00. It’s fantastic. I add a bit of water when heating it in the pan because it comes out of the tin looking dry and unappetising. But it’s honestly really tasty!

mellicauli · 14/09/2020 00:36

Waitrose No1 Lemon and Lime Drizzle cake is really nice

user32723 · 14/09/2020 07:28

Lidl bakery aisle. They have Portuguese custard tarts too, my kids love the giant fresh salted pretzels, and I usually warm them in the oven for a few minutes to make them even better. At the moment they have them on special in big frozen packs to bake at home and they are even nicer than the ready made.

Lidl cheap bar of milk chocolate with hazelnuts. It has so many whole hazelnuts.

Lidl sweet potato fries, and regular potato fries, cheap and crispy.

Lidl pickled anchovies.

Lidl chunky tinned soups, they are more like a casserole than a soup. My favourite is the minted lamb, I put it in the kids thermos flasks for school over winter.

Lidl sliced beef us cheap and the nicest, in fact all the sandwich meat except their pastrami which I don't rate. I always get a pack of prosciutto ham.

Lidl smokey barbecue fajita seasoning mix, much cheaper than Old El Paso.

Namechangeforthis88 · 14/09/2020 10:15

On Friday afternoon I cycled round town going to supermarkets I never normally go to, queuing up and coming out with two things each time. I have demolished all the Polish chocolates I gathered in, the chocolate cherry liqueurs went like snow off a dyke, as my mother would say.

@Haworthia Sainsbury's chickpea dhal is going on our camping shopping list.

Sexnotgender · 14/09/2020 10:46

Just had a cook from frozen maple pecan danish. Oh my... might have been the best thing I’ve had in a while, just need to be careful you don’t take the skin off your mouth shovelling in the molten centre.

RobikandLexik · 14/09/2020 11:39

Chipotle Chilli flakes; great with all sorts and adds interest and depth of smokey flavour

That and Stoke's Sticky Pickle, from an ex-Branston eater, so much better

cooliebrown · 14/09/2020 11:44

TL:DR so apologies if someone has already mentioned spices. You can usually get a big bag of cumin/ginger/turmeric etc. from the 'ethnic' aisle for the same price as a small jar on the 'schwarz' aisle

MadameBlobby · 14/09/2020 11:57

Sorry I haven’t read all the thread but definitely adding some of these to my lists!

My faves are (sorry if any duplication)

Aldi fish burgers (frozen) amazing in a ciabatta roll
Aldi “croll” - is croissant rolls
In Aldi in Bristol we got pains au raisin in the baked goods aisle but can’t get them here yet :(
Lidl lentil curls
Lidl peppermint chocolate (like Aero but nicer)
Lidl hortus gin with the green label

MadameBlobby · 14/09/2020 11:58

At the moment they have them on special in big frozen packs to bake at home and they are even nicer than the ready made

OMG!

I have to make a special trip to Lidl as I don’t work near one now (made redundant :( and now wfh) but I know where I am going tonight !

PerditaNitt · 14/09/2020 14:55

madame blobby I’ve been eyeing up those Aldi croissant rolls for a while. Wasn’t sure if they would be a bit stodgy rather than crispy. That said, might as well give them a go!

ChicCroissant · 14/09/2020 16:52

Sorry, I got mine in Tesco CoffeeandCroissant I like your username btw Grin

Lidl's fresh bakery croissants are gorgeous (and a bargain price for a huge croissant) but as they are loose I am avoiding them in the covid era. I wish they'd bag them up, I used to be able to go in after the school run and get one warm from the oven and a freebie McD's coffee to go with it

AquaBaba · 14/09/2020 19:49

Whenever I visit Tesco in Oxford, I buy a sweet cheese bun from The Polish bakery. Sadly, I can't order it online for some reason.
Waitrose tuna pate is the best. My elder son lives on tuna pate sandwiches, we've tried all supermarket own pates, and Waitrose is excellent. M&S did a similar pate until recently, when they started to add dill, which my son doesn't like.
Waitrose Essentials pasta (fusilli etc) is the one I buy most often. It's good quality.
Waitrose own fresh green pesto tastes just like homemade.
Someone already mentioned Crosta & Millica Pane Pugliese toasting bread. It's fantastic, toasted and spread with butter, which is dripping through the holes on your fingers. :)
Thanks for all the suggestions! I've just placed an order for Tesco and added seedy bites, frozen Danish pastries and meatballs with carrot and onion. Will report later.
M&S All Butter Stem Ginger cookies are lush.

chunkyrun · 14/09/2020 19:55

These tasty little things! I was eating them once a week so started making my own from scratch. Think I've got recipe nailed now

Chunkyrun can you share your recipe - I love it and eat far too many bags!!
