Just a bit of fun. I always end up buying similar food items in my weekly shop. Occasionally I’ll try something new and it’s really nice and I’ll continue to buy it. For example last week I bought some balsamic chutney from Morrison’s- it was so good I’ve added it to most sandwich fillings yum 😋

Have you bought anything new recently which you’ve been really impressed with?

I buy Milka chocolate from Farmfoods, 49p a bar - bought a large bar of Milka hazlenut choc recently which was more expensive and disappeared very quickly. Farmfoods also have Seabrooks crisps which are my DD's favourite.

Sainsburys taste the difference beer battered onion rings

THE best you’ll ever have.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/09/2020 22:11

@VinylDetective

They are very tiny, but sooo delicious that they almost make you cry tears of pure, unadulterated joy

Are you the one who screamed at the Sistine Chapel?

No, but give me a chance- I haven't visited there yet.

I love this thread so much. So many great suggestions!

Titsywoo · 12/09/2020 22:47

@TheClitterati

I bought so many chutneys and I'm always disappointed as they tend to be so sweet. I'd like a really flavourful spicy chutney that's not ridiculously sweet. if anyone knows of one.

I really like the jars of sliced jalapeño peppers. Yum

Try Sainburys Taste the Difference spiced apple and pear chutney - not too sweet at all and very moreish

Aldi Animus wine from Portugal is gorgeous.. Project Sauvignon white is lovely and the rose ( French, can’t remember name) is fab.....another one for frozen onions , peppers and mushrooms From Aldi and jars of garlic and chilli fr Lidl.
I don’t know if they’re always there but the frozen lamb shanks in rosemary jus from Aldi which you boil for 40 mins and reveals an amazing melt in the mouth, meat falling off the bone dish! Serve with Potato Gratin for a stunning meal! Aldi also do a duck leg/ confit in the chilled food section that heats up in 40 mins that is delicious.. serve with roast potatoes and greens! Their steaks ( here in Ireland ) are excellent too.

@Lemonsaretheonlyfruit

Itsu gyoza in the Sainsbury's freezer section. I cane across them in lockdown and have now developed something of a habit. Also I notice they are doing itsu Raman broth as a base for soups/ stirfrys too.
Waitrose have got £1 off of frozen Itsu gyoza right now @Lemonsaretheonlyfruit

Have stocked up. Also doing Itsu Bao Buns for £3 too.

My SIL says Lidl does the most gorgeous bread very cheap - I think it's a focaccia? Apparently it is so popular that it flies off the shelf as the staff put it out, and you have to be there at the right time of morning to be in with a chance. She has excellent taste.

I've never even seen it because I don't shop that early.

Saracen · 13/09/2020 00:35

Vegan shawarma kebab. Is just like the meaty version. My DH, a dyed-in-the-wool carnivore who turns his nose up at vegan food, nibbled a bit which was left in the kitchen. He thought it was the real thing.

Saracen · 13/09/2020 00:41

Cofresh frozen Punjabi samosas. (Only tried the vegetarian ones.) I never thought Cofresh was a good brand: I associate them with uninspired bombay mix.

But these samosas are something else. I couldn't say whether they are "authentic", but the spices are wonderfully complex and remind me of homemade food. The pastry is lovely too.

Saracen · 13/09/2020 00:49

Vegan chorizo sausages are great in a paella or any other dish which needs a smoky hit. Again, they fooled my DH who won't touch anything that hasn't looked over a hedge.

I've tried several brands and liked them all. Sainsbury's Love Your Veg chorizo style Shroomdogs is one example.

Erdinger Pikantus beer from Waitrose. It’s a weizenbock, a strong, dark, rich, sweet wheat beer and it’s absolutely delicious.

Graphista · 13/09/2020 01:04

Vegan shawarma kebab. where’s that from?! I’ve tried making my own veggie version to no avail

froggygoneacourting · 13/09/2020 01:12

Haven’t RTFT but I recently discovered that frozen sweet potato oven chips taste exactly like restaurant sweet potato chips, and not at all like regular frozen oven chips (which are horrible).

This is only good news if you like sweet potato chips.

Not heard this saying before. What does it mean?

Have you tried Asian pickles? May give you more sieve than a chutney? Smile

Anyone ever used Luchito Chipotke paste? Tempted but worries I’ll use it once and it’s not cheap at £4.

We like Vivera's Shawarma Kebab best, but Vegan Butcher "Good Karma Shawarma" is also nice. Both are in Tesco chilled section. They freeze well. I think I've seen the Vivera one in Sainsbury also.

Today I noticed a new Vivera Greek kebab in Tesco also. Haven't tried it yet.

LH1987 · 13/09/2020 05:24

Ocado - truffle and artichoke pesto, on pasta it is delicious!

Sexnotgender · 13/09/2020 07:03

@honeygirlz I’ve used that paste, it’s lovely!

Quite spicy. I use it to flavour my halloumi fajitas.

Branleuse · 13/09/2020 08:04

Bonne maman lemon tarts are better than the strawberry ones. Even more moving than the sistine chapel imo

Branleuse · 13/09/2020 08:05

and i cant believe someone has suggested flying goose sriracha. The flying cock brand is FAR superior, but harder to find.
Flying goose sriracha mayo is good tho
