Just in case, spoiler alert!

Sirius Black.

OP posts:

Wheel of Time series. Book 14. A Memory of Light.
Bella the pony got killed on the battlefield.

Floored me. Did not see it coming. All the miles she trotted, bags she carried, people she saved and she didn't get to retire in a nice meadow with a companion and an apple tree.

Soubriquet · 06/09/2020 12:55

Oh and Lincoln from The 100.

zippityzip · 06/09/2020 12:56

@iamtheoneandonlyyy

When Opie died I literally couldn't watch it for weeks afterwards. It was like a period of grief 😭

Never have I ever felt my blood run cold I literally jumped off the sofa and held my hands over my face. I was genuinely gutted.

Bearing in mind I've been a police officer for years there's literally nothing that can shock me in real life but I really really loved Opie 🙁

gggrrrargh · 06/09/2020 12:56

Joe Dubois in the last episode of Medium. Why!!!!!! It added nothing to the story, it wasn’t a continuation of an illness it was a ridiculous accident off screen. Why couldn’t Allison and Joe just have a happy ending!! I can’t get over the unfairness.

SconNotScone · 06/09/2020 12:56

@Fiftysixthnamechange Yes!! In complete agreement. I saw it coming time and time again, and then when it finally happened I felt like I’d been punched in the chest! I think it’s because when it eventually happened, it was written almost casually, so it felt like a bolt out the blue.

I felt entirely gutted about Willem’s death as well, I just felt so shocked. That book will stay with me forever!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 06/09/2020 12:56

Catherine in A Farewell To Arms

George O’Malley in Greys

The toddler in Sleepy Hollow

Lots of the others already mentioned above too.
Hate it when I don’t see it coming and/or it was not necessary.

NotBadConsidering · 06/09/2020 12:57

I always reconciled Goose’s “death” by believing he actually faked his own death to retrain as a doctor in Chicago with a new name, Mark Greene. Then Mark died and it all fell apart.

I can’t listen to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” without thinking of him, especially that ukulele version.

Lucy’s stabbing and death was probably the most tense traumatic hour of tv I’ve experienced. Never forgotten it.

toomanyspiderplants · 06/09/2020 12:57

johnny from the outsiders by s e hinton. ..I was in love with him!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 06/09/2020 12:57

Yondu....

Jin and Sun..seperated..reunited.. seperated..reunited..seperated..have a daughter..reunited and then to die together.

harriethoyle · 06/09/2020 12:58

Morse

And Stringer Bell. He was too handsome to die.

Tartyflette · 06/09/2020 12:58

Insp Lyndsey Denton in Line of Duty. Completely shocking,
Mind you, Jed Mercurio has a habit of killing off important characters, - - Steven Graham bought it in a later series of LoD.
(Not lead characters as it's an ensemble series if lots of ways)
He also killed off Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) in The Bodyguard.
So i try to be a bit more detached these days when i watch anything he's done!

UnfinishedSymphon · 06/09/2020 13:00

Doctors Pratt & Greene

Shelby in Steel Magnolias

Thomas Malone in Shetland - treated like shit as everyone thought he was guilty, proven innocent and then dies of a heart attack. Awful

SomewhereEast · 06/09/2020 13:02

I read Lord of the Rings for the first time when I was nine & burst out crying when Gandalf 'died'. My aunt had to take me aside & promise me he came back so I'd finish the trilogy Grin. Boxer also ended me around the same age.

More recently, the "Look at the flowers" death in The Walking Dead has really stuck with me. Also as a lifelong fan of dark angsty fictional bad boys Star Wars I was pretty pissed off about The Rise of Skywalker where no Slywalkers actually rose. Luke Skywalker's death in The Last Jedi felt right & had me properly welling up though.

GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 06/09/2020 13:04

Zac in Goodnight Mister Tom

Tartyflette · 06/09/2020 13:04

Mercurio also killed off Lenny James' character in the first series of LoD! Forgot about that one. Also very shocking. As intended, i suppose!

LazyDaisy22 · 06/09/2020 13:04

Henry in the Time Traveller’s Wife. Cried my eyes out.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/09/2020 13:04

Bella the pony got killed on the battlefield. I forgot about her! Yep, add her to my list. The creatures/people that did survive, but not Bella!

SomewhereEast · 06/09/2020 13:04

Argh I'd forgotten Rue in the Hunger Games till someone mentioned it! Katniss's stylist (Cana?) being dragged away to his end in front of her was rough too.

Poppadumpony · 06/09/2020 13:05

I opened your thread specifically to say Sirius Black. It was so cruel.

LittleMissNaice · 06/09/2020 13:05

Lots of the ones already mentioned. I'd add Mrs Landingham and Leo from The West Wing

OfaFrenchmind2 · 06/09/2020 13:05

All the Jedis. At the hands of their beloved clones Sad

Greenteandchives · 06/09/2020 13:05

Mog.
Sad

honeylulu · 06/09/2020 13:05

A more recent one but Denny from Eastenders. He was an annoying gobshite but it was such a cruel loss for Sharon - him being the miracle baby after thinking she couldn't have any, his father dying before he was born, and in the throes of labour as it happened.

YY to Cedric Diggory. I was really shocked as I think it was the first child- death in the HP series.

Matthew Crawley, yes I remember that well. Ruined Christmas day for a lot of people!

LadyH846 · 06/09/2020 13:06

Lady Sybill off Downton Abbey. Hit me like a ton of bricks!

MillicentMartha · 06/09/2020 13:06

FitzChivalry from the Assassin and Fool books by Robin Hobb.

Dobby and the girl from Bridge to Terebithia.

Siuan Sanche from Wheel of Time, she never got to marry Gareth Byrne.
