Summarise in maximum 3 words the performance of the current UK government

Coyocan politicians make the big political decisions with advice from civil servants on the likely consequences. In theory politicians should therefore carry the can if things go badly wrong. However the current crop prefer to scapegoat senior civil servants.

NotAKaren if Jeremy Corbyn had been in charge we would have had restrictions sooner, if only because he would bow down to requests from trade unions to do so.

More important is what would have happened if Jeremy Hunt had been chosen as Tory leader. I think restrictions would have happened on March 16th and thousands more would be alive today.

Restrictions did start then! look at all the headlines www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-51920427

Full lockdown was not started for another week, 23rd march? It was this delay that contributed to the very high death rate.

VinylDetective · 06/09/2020 19:42

Lockdown started on 23 March. Pubs and restaurants closed at midnight on 20 March which was also the last day schools were open. Non food shops were still open on 22 March. The government pissed about for a week after 16 March.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 06/09/2020 19:48

'Full lockdown was not started for another week, 23rd march? It was this delay that contributed to the very high death rate.'

Restrictions started on the 17th. Look how compliance became a problem with full lockdown, any earlier it wouldn't have lasted past the peak.

Don't get me wrong, questions need answering. Namely why PHE were an ineffective shambles and didn't use every private lab available to get testing massively expanded and rolled out quicker.

MistressMounthaven · 06/09/2020 19:54

Well obviously we'd have a vaccine and be back to normal, education fine, lots of jobs if Labour/ Lib Dems/ Greens had been in power. And Scotland, NI, Wales are so much better than England at the moHmm - it seems to be a British thing to constantly blame someone for your probs, whinge incessantly.

This is nonsense. Far more people were infected and died as a result of this delay.

The delay is indefensible.

We would have come out of lockdown earlier if we had gone in earlier, with more people alive.

Stop blaming PHE for political decisions. The government run the country and are directly responsible for PHE decisions.

The government are the government.

No. But I bet contracts and important jobs would have gone to qualified people, not friends.
Coyoacan · 06/09/2020 19:57

I'm not a Boris fan girl but the support for businesses and employees has been comprehensive

I just wonder about the national debt after all this and how it will be paid.

luckylavender · 06/09/2020 20:14

@KatherineJaneway - of all the defences of this government, this is the one I hate the most. Trying their best is an absolute minimum requirement. This isn't an U11s school football match.

NellyJames · 06/09/2020 20:14

Those surprised that people are still banging on about Corbyn should remember that right up until he left office in 2016, David Cameron was still blaming the Labour government that preceded him even though he was on his second term of office.

luckylavender · 06/09/2020 20:17

@bumblingbovine49 - how can you measure that? Labour haven't been in power for over 10 years.

Facelikearustytractor · 06/09/2020 20:18

Being anti Tory =/= necessarily labour voter!

Exactly. I have voted differently over the years - even Tory, although I am definitely not making that mistake again. My sister voted Conservative in the last election and really regrets it now.

luckylavender · 06/09/2020 20:19

@TulipsAndLilacs - especially as the odd shoes picture was photoshopped Hmm

Foobydoo · 06/09/2020 20:21

Bumbling, inept, corrupt.

luckylavender · 06/09/2020 20:24

@Coyoacan - because this government has such a high regard for the civil service

Yes quite! Maybe I would feel minded vote tory next time if they had handled a national crisis effectively!!
Foobydoo · 06/09/2020 20:30

@Coyoacan

My question is where is the civil service in all this?

Surely the civil service advises and makes most of the important decisions, having a wealth of experience behind it.

it's being slowly dismantled by Cummings.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 06/09/2020 20:31

'Stop blaming PHE for political decisions'

PHE seemed to be best suited to advising on nora virus outbreaks in schools or telling people to go on diets.

The biggest pandemic in decades showed up their woeful planning and lack of capability. So yes, I will blame them for the testing cock up. Anyway, they're being disbanded so hopefully the new organisation will ensure better preparedness.
