AIBU to think Lauren Goodger needs help and filters are dangerous

As above, there have been new pics of LG today looking different, possibly new surgery or possibly backgrid have gone too far with their tweeks. I'm not interested in her life before anyone starts that and she can have as much surgery as she likes as long as she can mentally cope with it.

..and thats where my AIBU sits. Do you think girls like LG are promoting unacceptable physical attainment by constantly filtering and messing with their pics? I'm really wary of filters and not because I don't need them (see username) but because I think they mess with your head.

I don't think filters are dangerous. Magazines and newspapers have been airbrushing for, well, at least my entire lifetime. There are always unattainable messages circulating if you care to follow them or be moved by them. In a free world, which I think we live in (though I admit I have doubts from time to time), we can turn the page, scroll on by. No one is forced to consume these images. I actually have no idea who Lauren Goodger is (and I do watch TV/follow the news).

RozHuntleysStump · 03/09/2020 16:41

She was so bonny years ago. I watched the first couple of series of the Essex program. Such a shame.

Sorry, I dont mean to sound combative but I think that's really niave. Just because you can turn a page or not look doesnt mean it's not a problem.

Yes I think filters are harmful and create an unattainable and unnatural standard that many young girls will feel they need to match up to.

However the same applies to surgery, botox, fillers and Photoshop. Maybe even professional make up and photography techniques that make someone look completely different and “airbrushed”.

If we are going to ban one thing that creates an unrealistic and unattainable image, perhaps we need to ban it all.

BlueJava · 03/09/2020 16:47

I actually feel sorry for her, I'm not a fan anyway but just as another human I feel she has gone far too far with the surgery and changes. I can't understand how on earth she believes she looks better with the surgery. Sad, but I hope she can find happiness.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/09/2020 16:52

I think she has huge issues and I hope that one day she gets some help. It isn’t just the way she looks it’s the weird sexual images and videos she puts out.

I really dislike filters etc, I get the appeal but making yourself look different in a photo isn’t going to solve whatever you feel insecure about. Some people change photos so much that they almost unrecognisable.

SallyMullally · 03/09/2020 16:57

I don’t understand filter culture these days,

It was much more subtle (and, one would think, insidious) years ago, when subtle tweaks were made to photos of models and celebrities so we thought they really were perfect goddesses and we could never hope to achieve that level of perfection.

Nowadays the filtering is everywhere and it’s SO obvious. Does anyone really think the likes of Lauren Goodge look like her very obviously filtered pics? She shaves off about 2 stone in weight and ten inches off her waist in her staged shots. Khloe Kardashian completely alters her face shape. Kylie Jenner looks like a Barbie in her pics, and a fairly plain girl with a lot of filler when she isn’t filtered.

Surely the whole thing has gone so far, and the filtering is now so extreme and obvious, we should all be seeing it for what it is? It’s not real. I think even young teenagers must be cottoning on to that nowadays. You’d hope so!

AllWashedOut · 03/09/2020 17:01

@Fatworthlesscow No need to apologise for having a different opinion. There is no 'right' answer per se. I would say that in my experience with working with teens, and indeed as a mother of under-10s, that the most important influences upon a developing child are people, real people. If mum is a dieter, a worrier, or obsessive about makeup/appearance, that is easily transmitted. I would say much more so than photos in Closer or the DM. Youtube et al are of course much more intimate and arguably more influential on teens. Only my opinion though.

SoManyActivities · 03/09/2020 17:06

I'm not sure that most teenagers would even look to Lauren Goodger as an example now though, she has gone so far with the facial surgery and I think she is still only about 30? I feel sorry for her too, she was alright on TOWIE and Mark treated her like shite.

Mind you, in her latest Insta photo her minge is literally being held in by a single thread of elastic. One false move (or any move) and we would be able to see what she had for breakfast!

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/09/2020 17:15

Kylie Jenner looks like a Barbie in her pics, and a fairly plain girl with a lot of filler when she isn’t filtered.

See, I don't think this is helpful. I've just googled 'Kylie Jenner unfiltered' and in some photos, presumably a few years ago before surgery - she looks pretty. Why dismiss her as 'fairly plain'?

That's adding to the tsunami of messages that the looks of a perfectly nice looking teenage girl aren't good enough.

Feminist10101 · 03/09/2020 17:17

The filters are popular, most people use them

Most?! Confused

Chickychickydodah · 03/09/2020 17:20

She is a desperate wanna be , if you see her photos and then paps there is a BIG difference. sad really ..

SoManyActivities · 03/09/2020 17:21

Yes, I think it might be true that the filtering is now so ridiculous and obvious that it is less damaging that a few years ago when it was much more subtle.

Hangingover · 03/09/2020 17:25

Oof. These girls look so....swollen Sad

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/09/2020 17:28

@VacMan

Try googling Aubrey O'Day, she has photoshopped herself a whole new person.

She has even dyed her DOGS in multi-primary colours!

This woman takes filters to the max 🤦‍♀️

MrsMayo · 03/09/2020 17:34

If people are filtering their pics on dating apps to this extent then what happens when they meet up?

Magicbabywaves · 03/09/2020 17:41

Those lips just look sore

VacMan · 03/09/2020 17:43

She has even dyed her DOGS in multi-primary colours!

I feel sorry for LG. In pap pics she looks about a size 14/16 and there is nothing wrong with that yet she edits her pictures so much and claims to be a 10. It's so sad. She seems to lead a very lonely life from what I've seen.

And yes I agree that the comparisons between her and michelle must have been hard for her but..years after her split with mark she'd still talk about him

I'm loving helen flanagan atm, didnt used to be a big fan but shes stopped editing her pictures and I think it's great

xoxogossipgirl2020 · 03/09/2020 17:47

Wow....the edit of the childhood photo has actually shocked me!

Hellishcrusade · 03/09/2020 17:48

I feel very sorry for her. I think she has horrifically low self esteem, I think she's desperate for fame and fortune and she saw Mark Wright as her ticket to that, he was quite cruel to her- he made it clear he felt he was better looking and she was 'punching' and then he left her and went off being successful and got himself an absolutely beautiful wife and a combination of that and her self esteem issues have destroyed her. She's a bit like Katie Price- one more surgery and I'll be perfect (when each surgery makes things worse), Constantly comparing themselves to other women etc. But Katie seems to have a good support network who stop her spiralling into a hole and it seems Lauren doesn't. She seems to only attract the lowest of the low men too, I think she's so needy she drives anyone remotely decent away. Which is so sad because she badly needs someone to love her unconditionally. To be honest I think Lauren Goodger is doing herself far more damage than she is anyone else and it makes me sad because there are so many young women just like her, doing the exact same things and no-one steps in to help. Although maybe people have tried, I knew a similar young woman in my late teens/ early 20's, her only aim in life was to frequent the footballer's hangouts in the hope of bagging one and becoming a wag on the pages of the gossip magazines. She dedicated all her time and effort to it and she was used and discarded, disrespected all the time. So many young women aspire to the Z-list lifestyle in the hopes of making it big and I think THAT is the problem, Lauren is not the cause, she's one of the victims in my eyes.
