To be a 40 year old woman that plays Fortnite

Givemestrengthorgin · 03/09/2020 11:03

I've started playing Fortnite on my DS's switch. Downloaded it for him but realised it's too old for him (I initially thought it was about dancing!) But found that I am actually really enjoy playing it and I think I'm quite good. My DH thinks it's an unusual thing to do for someone from my 'demographic'! Does anyone else on here play Fortnite?

I play, have a whole group of friends on there and enter Fortnite tournaments for money. I’m a 44 year old mother of 2 Grin

Givemestrengthorgin · 03/09/2020 11:12

@Worriedmum999, that's amazing! I had no idea you could compete for money. I'm really enjoying it. I love playing in a squad and find it amazing that it's other actual people I am playing alongside. I'm not too good at combat yet but I really like rescuing my team members...makes me feel good Smile

While I think fortnite isn't a game I think is worth the time because I feel it's a bit hyped and there are loads of way better games out there but I think there is nothing wrong with adults using game consoles!

It's no different to spending time reading or watching a tv series.

All of them engage the brain and open up new worlds in your imagination.

Rebuildingconfidence · 03/09/2020 11:27

I play. I am almost 40, mother of 2. I play solo because I enjoy the challenges and I don't think I am good enough to play in a squad. I am getting better at eliminations but I can't build which limits me.

Ginkypig · 03/09/2020 11:27

I should have said though. That if you are enjoying it then that's all that matters! It doesn't matter if someone else wouldn't like that game or another person looks down completely at playing at all, you enjoy it!

I'm crap at combat too so I like healing but actually I don't play games with lots of fighting or team combat because it makes me feel crap at playing Blush

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2020 11:27

Wasn't it Fortnite where a 15 YO boy won nearly a million dollars and bought his DM a house?

OP YANBU, if you enjoy it, that's fine. Maybe your DH is worried that you're going to be having your own leisure time instead of doing all the parenting and housework while he sits around?

Givemestrengthorgin · 03/09/2020 11:41

@Ginkypig I feel the pressure to perform when part of a squad and usually don't deliver. But saying that, I did manage to take my squad to a victory last night by harpooning someone and I felt like an absolute hero! Bit disappointed that I can't celebrate with my team when we win though, I just stand still and can't do anything or see anyone. Given the theatrics of the game I expected a big celebration.

@Rebuildingconfidence I can't build either, just can't get to grips with it.

@BarbaraofSeville to be fair to my DH he isn't critical of me playing it, just thinks it's probably quite unusual. He might even be slightly in awe of me Wink.

Ah, I know what you mean. DP is like that with me when I go cold water scuba diving, which he hates or mountain biking, especially when it's night riding in the forest with a small group of other women.

YABU to be over 12 and playing Fortnite. Get GTA or Read Dead Redemption, something more suitable for adults.

’YABU to be over 12 and playing Fortnite. Get GTA or Read Dead Redemption, something more suitable for adults.’

Yawn.

Givemestrengthorgin · 03/09/2020 12:16

@contrmary I may well do, I feel like I'm discovering a whole new world!

Muggly · 03/09/2020 12:20

something more suitable for adults.
How is it not suitable for adults?

I used to play it regularly but I've started to get a bit bored of it lately, my new favourite game is Minecraft, I'm addicted!

Pompoko · 03/09/2020 12:29

I’m 30 and have started to play with my son and love it!
The new taxi game is brilliant fun! Well worth it.
It’s rather rewarding to get a victory royale and have a dance 😂

PlateTectonics · 03/09/2020 12:31

I'm 46, my sons play and I have got into it during lockdown. It's fun!

Givemestrengthorgin · 03/09/2020 12:32

@Pompoko I don't get to dance when I win. I wonder if that is a fault as it definitely feels like I should be able to dance. Hmm...

If you're enjoying gaming get the Witcher on Switch. Fabulous game, you can sink hours into it.

Pompoko · 03/09/2020 12:50

You need to press the emote button and pick one like if you where in game. But if you haven’t selected any from the locker then it will be empty. You can get more with the battle pass as you level up, it’s about £8 at the minute for it. Adds a bit more fun

TheHighestSardine · 03/09/2020 13:09

I play it, on sufferance because it's not a very good game, but it's the only ones that I and my friends can play across the random assembly of PCs, Playstations and Xboxes we have.

I'd much prefer to get everyone together on a decent tactical shooter like Ghost Recon Wildlands or something silly but fun like Borderlands, or something with gameplay depth like Monster Hunter World, or something with story like The Elder Scrolls online...

TheHighestSardine · 03/09/2020 13:09

... but that would require everyone to have the same console or a PC and all the kit to go with it. Most of us play on the kid's kit... not me, I've got one of each.

SamsMumsCateracts · 03/09/2020 14:14

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. I'm a minecrafter and simmer myself. Large thirties. My DCs' friends think I'm the cool mum since I know what they're talking about and can give them tips Grin

RaspberryToupee · 03/09/2020 14:25

Not fortnite but got quite into playing Lego. DH and I spent the bank holiday playing Lego DC villains.

And it’s so much more fun than Red Dead Redemption or GTA. Grin

DeeTractor · 03/09/2020 14:30

YABU, because as everyone on MN knows if you have ever even held a control pad you are a pathetic immature (wo)man child who is destined to be forever alone languishing in your stinking dark cave hunched over screen.

There, now that's out of the way... I've played a bit of Fortnite myself and I'm shit at it. I can see why it's popular though! I can't really play FPS games for any length of time at all because they give me motion sickness.

Shantotto · 03/09/2020 15:07

I’m 40 and I play games all the time but I don’t play Fortnite as I think it’s total rubbish - you have a Switch there are countless more games infinitely better than Fortnite! Play those instead!

feistyoneyouare · 03/09/2020 15:21

Speaking as a 52-year-old who recently started playing The Sims again, you are definitely not BU. Grin

InTheCludgie · 03/09/2020 15:44

I dont play Fortnite, 10 year old DS does but I love World of Warcraft- first started playing at age 27 and am now 40. I have lost many hours to the game but do not regret it - have met people IRL via the game and meet up with them every year when we go on holiday
