To ask what fruit you eat

I'm trying to eat better which includes more fruit. I've always enjoyed eating veg even when I was young so I've got no problems there but I've never been a big fruit person. So I'm sat here having watermelon for a snack, I also buy bananas and grapes quite regularly but not much else. I buy strawberries and raspberries but they're quite expensive so not that often. What other fruit do you have regularly that I could incorporate into my day?

My local Tesco has greengages in at the moment - they are DELICIOUS

AllPlayedOut · 03/09/2020 14:26

Have people ever stopped to think that if you eat more fruit, that’s nutritionally better for you, that you’d actually stop craving the sugar of chocolate, cakes, and biscuits every day?

Tried it. It didn't work.

Sometimes you can get good pears, but I've never managed to get the hard ones to ripen at home.

Tinned in fresh juice can be a good option for pears. I agree it's really hard to get them at perfect ripeness.

JingsMahBucket · 03/09/2020 14:29

@2020iscancelled

I remember someone at work shouting across the kitchen at me eating a banana

“I don’t eat them, far too much sugar”

As she was rigorously tucking into a bag of salt and vinegar walkers - I kid you not.

@2020iscancelled tell me about it. The banana probably has less or the same amount of carbs as the bag of Walkers but has way more nutrition such as potassium. People don't know how to eat properly.
BrandyandBabycham · 03/09/2020 14:32

I’m rubbish at eating fruit but when I look down a list, there’s loads I like. Can recommend candy floss grapes. Bought a massive boxful from Tesco’s yesterday for £3 & they are so good!

CarolVordermansArse · 03/09/2020 14:33

You would need to eat truckloads of bananas to get a decent dose of potassium, they only contain a little bit.

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/09/2020 14:35

If you’ve got a garden, rhubarb is great, as it just does it’s own thing - the original low maintenance fruit - works well stewed with muesli and was my go to fruit during lockdown when I ran out of fresh fruit and veg and was putting off the shopping.

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/09/2020 14:38

Living alone during the lockdown, marks and Spencer fruit boxes were my new best friend. I loved them.

JadesRollerDisco · 03/09/2020 15:01

If you want to ripen pears put them in a bowl with some ripe bananas

PollyPelargonium52 · 03/09/2020 16:14

Think I will grow rhubarb it is v tasty plus easy to grow.

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/09/2020 16:17

Don’t eat the leaves - obviously! There was that wartime case of the couple who put them in a salad and nearly died...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 16:19

If you have spare rhubarb you can cook it and puree it and it's awesome in cocktailsGrin
I poached it and froze it in small pieces, now it's added into yogurt or oats when I fancy.

I rarely eat fruit but do have a lot of vegetables and salad. The only time I buy fruit is when the grandchildren are visiting; even they're not too keen!

London1066 · 03/09/2020 16:35

I love melon as it's really fresh, goes a long way and keeps ages.

Frozen fruit is great for porridge, cereal and smoothies. Buy berries, mango and pineapple for the freezer

Erm no. One medium banana has 12% of your potassium intake. More than a bag of freaking Walkers crisps, I can assure you. nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1846/2

This absolutism is such a problem on MN. Just because something isn't entirely 100% perfect and an all in one shot, people disregard it as a solution. (see: masking wearing) It's ridiculous.

damnthatanxiety · 03/09/2020 16:47

I see sad one people saying that dried fruit and tinned fruits count. Well they do and they don't. Tinned fruit in syrup is too full of sugar. Dried fruits are a problem because no one eats one dried apricot or 8 raisins. If you eat 6 dried apricots, you are eating the sugar of 6 apricots. If you eat a handful of raisins, that's a whole bunch of grapes. It is very easy to over eat sugars when you are eating dried fruit.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 16:50

Tbh I never eat less than 6 apricots anyway😂

People do have to use common sense there. It counts, but obviously you can't eat too much of dried fruit or canned in syrup.

PickAChew · 03/09/2020 16:52

I don't eat much fruit. I have a banana with my breakfast, most mornings. DS1 likes watermelon - I might have a bit if I'm preparing some but I don't always fancy it. If I have blueberries or raspberries, they're normally baked into something. I like strawberries but they give me the shits, sometimes, so don't bother. I had a couple of flat peaches, a few weeks ago and they were delicious but far too sweet and i felt like crap, afterwards.

Truzza · 03/09/2020 16:54

0 can't stand fruit
Not fussy in any other food groups, I don't like sugary foods like inc fruit 😬

PickAChew · 03/09/2020 16:55

I always struggle to think of rhubarb as a fruit. It's no more a fruit than spinach is! I do like a rhubarb crumble but wouldn't ever make it if it wasn't the only vegetable by stealth that my autistic boys will touch.

VettiyaIruken · 03/09/2020 16:56

I love most fruits and berries.
The less common ones that I love are mangosteen, guava, and custard apple
Jackfruit tastes nice but bloody stinks. Absolutely reeks. I tried it once. Never again!

I have to ask. No fruit? Really? There is so much variety with different textures, flavours, sweetness, I can't believe someone doesn't like any

You are right😂 It's a veg. I never think of it as veg. It's like the tomato issue, innit
SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 17:04

And isn't aubergine fruit too?🤔

lljkk · 03/09/2020 17:04

Savoury fruit: tomatoes, courgettes, avocados, squash, pumpkins. must be more I temporarily forget.

Isn't rhubarb technically a vegetable: a stalk, anyway is what people eat.
