To ask what fruit you eat

I'm trying to eat better which includes more fruit. I've always enjoyed eating veg even when I was young so I've got no problems there but I've never been a big fruit person. So I'm sat here having watermelon for a snack, I also buy bananas and grapes quite regularly but not much else. I buy strawberries and raspberries but they're quite expensive so not that often. What other fruit do you have regularly that I could incorporate into my day?

Everything! I now have a riverford fruit box and I love the variety. They include apple, pear, oranges and bananas in every box, so there are safe choices. But there are also different ones every week. DH is a bit boring as he must have apples and oranges every day. So we top up with whichever isn't in the fruit box each week.

This is the one

Those ‘candy floss’ grapes and ‘strawberry’ grapes are delicious! I tend to buy those ready ripe pears a lot I can’t stand waiting for fruit to go ripe. I love sitting down of an evening with a pomegranate, it takes ages to eat so you won’t feel like you need a snack afterwards.

millymae · 03/09/2020 09:18

Mrs Chatterbox -how can you think plums are cheap and nasty? They might not be very pleasant out of season but try some English Victoria’s or Marjorie Seedling - In all the shops now, even Aldi. They are absolutely delicious and not expensive at the moment.
We go through lots of fruit in our house and try to buy UK grown wherever possible. We always have oranges, apples, easy peelers, bananas, kiwi fruit and passion fruit though which all the children love and In the last few weeks we’ve gone through a fair few limelons.
I never eat the apples other than cooked and I’m not that fond of nectarines or peaches unless they are at their very best. I love an English conference pear when it’s ripe and juicy and a proper satsuma.
.i do shop in Marks and Spencer for fruit but have honestly found that Aldi and Lidl’s UK grown fruit compares really well for almost half the price. Their cherries, strawberries and raspberries have been just as good and often better. Tesco has had a few punnets of English apricots this year and they’ve been tasty too. I haven’t bought any grapes for ages but they are a staple when there’s not much else to buy.

Enjoying apples just now with some peanut butter and also love peaches, pears and nectarines but sometimes struggle to get them just right for eating usually hard when I buy them ? Where does everyone think is the best supermarket for fruit ?

WhyIsItSoHardToPickAUsername · 03/09/2020 09:52

@luckylady22 M&S or Morrison's I think.

CorianderLord · 03/09/2020 10:20

Lots of watermelon and mango, occasional banana with breakfast, sometimes an apple in the afternoon. Love a pear if we have them in.

I eat a lot of f + v because we eat mostly vegan

PollyPelargonium52 · 03/09/2020 10:38

Blueberries. Apple. Also eating strawberries daily of late.

About fruit sugars and the story that there is too much sugar in fruit:

ChanceEncounter · 03/09/2020 12:54

Watermelons are a disgrace imo. They look so good but taste of nothing!

JadesRollerDisco · 03/09/2020 13:27

I tend to always have a bag of frozen berries in the freezer. I add them to porridge, or stew them, add to muffin mix and cake mix things like that. Also in smoothies. Sometimes I have another fruit in the freezer too, usually mango which I add to salad (I am a big fan of salad with a little fruit in it, it's my favourite way to eat fruit).
Tend to get fresh berries or cherries which the kids eat very quickly and some exotic fruits as a treat when I can afford it, especially in summer. In winter I'll get some cooking apples or rhubarb or plums and make crumble.
Apples, pears, satsumas/ clementines, plums, peaches, apricots, kiwis, all in some combination. Usually I just get a bag or two of whatever's on offer.
We always have bananas, and used to have grapes but not so much recently.
I tend to buy some watermelon pieces on the way back from school run or the park because it's hydrating, and sweet enough that I'm not tempted to buy a box of ice lollies instead (although we do that sometimes too).
We have tinned peaches, pineapple, and pears which are nice with custard or ice cream as a dessert, or yoghurt for breakfast . Also tinned mandarin segments which I add to jelly or Make ambrosia salad.
Always fresh lemons and limes I use them for everything. Sometimes I freeze some slices for drinks, too.

I probably would hardly buy fruit at all if I didn't have kids. I would just have lemons and limes for cooking and buy what I needed occasionally for specific meals or desserts. I absolutely love my veg which is much more important to me.

JingsMahBucket · 03/09/2020 13:29

@80sMum

It's best to limit fruit consumption because it has a high sugar content. So don't worry about trying to eat more fruit, OP, eat more vegetables instead!
I always find it funny whenever I read this opinion on MN. For the amount of times people talk about being addicted to chocolate, biscuits or cake, you would think they would be okay with fruit. But oh no, fruit is the devil sugar source.

Have people ever stopped to think that if you eat more fruit, that’s nutritionally better for you, that you’d actually stop craving the sugar of chocolate, cakes, and biscuits every day?

littlepeas · 03/09/2020 13:34

Mainly apples and berries at home. An occasional banana if they are just right.

I’m very unbothered by tropical fruit.

I like apples with cheese!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 14:03

I love watermelon, no other melons though. Hate mango. Bluegh.

Apples, pears, citruses, frozen berries (including cherries etc), plums, grapes, figs, nectarines, peaches, lychee, pineapple, kiwis, cacti fruit thing.

There are so many different kinds of pears, plums and apples one cannot get bored even just with them.

Visit local foreign food markets. I always find something tasty there. Keep to season where possible. Tinned and frozen is absolutely ok too so don't miss out on them.

amicissimma · 03/09/2020 14:05

Apples, plums and figs are good at the moment. Sometimes you can get good pears, but I've never managed to get the hard ones to ripen at home.

Frozen fruit is lovely to snack on still frozen. Dried mango is wonderful, but in small quantities as the sugar is more concentrated in dried fruit.

Take no notice of the 'high sugar content' nonsense. The sugar is mostly fructose, which takes time to break down in the body to glucose. The presence of fibre in the fruit also slows down the rate that sugar hits the bloodstream. Unlike sweet processed carbs that shoot your blood sugar up leading to a crash down, wanting more. Fruit will leave you feeling fuller for longer.

2020iscancelled · 03/09/2020 14:06

Mmmm ALL the fruit.

I’m not a fan of grapefruit but everything else yes.

I have blueberries and strawberries most mornings with my yoghurt and I do like a banana mid morning. I love pineapple, mango, nectarines, plums, apricots. Meh basically any of the fruit.

Aldi and lidl very cheap for fruit, doesn’t always have the best shelf life so don’t buy tons at a time but def cheaper than all the other supermarkets

2020iscancelled · 03/09/2020 14:07

Lol at limiting fruit bc of sugar.

No.

It’s not the same thing as eating cookies and cake.

Eat your fruit!

2020iscancelled · 03/09/2020 14:09

I remember someone at work shouting across the kitchen at me eating a banana

“I don’t eat them, far too much sugar”

As she was rigorously tucking into a bag of salt and vinegar walkers - I kid you not.

ChanceEncounter · 03/09/2020 14:09

Sometimes you can get good pears, but I've never managed to get the hard ones to ripen at home.

Oooh,poached pears are good Smile

bengalcat · 03/09/2020 14:10

I love strawberries , mango , banana and passion fruit .

WellTidy · 03/09/2020 14:11

I spend an absolute fortune on fruit - probably £25 or so a week. At the moment, we are eating masses of plums and mandarins.

PhilSwagielka · 03/09/2020 14:12

Apples, raisins, satsumas, raspberries (they're great with ice cream), grapes. Sometimes I buy those little packs of mango or melon bits you get in supermarkets.

WhyIsItSoHardToPickAUsername · 03/09/2020 14:22

@littlepeas my favourite snack is chopped up apple with little cubes of cheddar.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 14:24

God yeah. Apple (or pear) and manchego here. Great snack.
