Trump used manipulation and race-baiting four years ago. He’s at it again. We are weary and worried but we shall persist.

Soup jokes Grin
Soup comes in bags in the US?

TheSparklyPussycat · 03/09/2020 17:09

Or did the Donald mean bags of tins of soup?

BruceAndNosh · 03/09/2020 17:12

Personally, I've always thought that Mulligatawny was dangerous stuff

Advertisers will be able to continue running ads they started running before the final week and adjust the targeting for those ads.

Facebook bans new political ads in week before election.
The measures also aim to prevent campaigns and their supporters from making premature claims of victory, a situation some Democrats have described as a doomsday scenario.

I see this as the same regulations that prevent the media from posting results or 'calling a race' before all the polls are closed. I think it's just another case of regulation catching up with the 'internet age'.

It's aimed to stop people who haven't voted from not voting because they think 'the race is already lost'.

I think it's bullshit that they'll still be able to run ads that are lies, though. Unless FB intends to up it's fact-checking and 'tagging' teams to put 'warnings' on them. But then again, all they have to do is focus on GOP ads. That'll capture 99% of the lies.

Or did the Donald mean bags of tins of soup?
I really can't tell at this point but I did want to take the opportunity to add this.

I am enjoying the soup superfluousness way too much.

Lweji · 03/09/2020 21:00

On proposing that people try to vote twice.

If a Republican, it will be innocent and if they succeed it will be proof that the system is rigged.

If a Democrat, then it will be proof that Democrats are conducting electoral fraud.

In reality, a President is encouraging people to commit electoral fraud.

The correct interpretation, he's planning to get his people to vote twice.

PerkingFaintly · 03/09/2020 21:21

Which once again works for Papa Putin's his "election wasn't valid" strategy.

He doesn't even need people to genuinely attempt to vote twice.

He's laid the groundwork for his supporters to claim they successfully voted twice.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/09/2020 22:01

Surely in America, as here, a record is kept of who has voted -- and don't give me "secret ballot": the ballot papers have a number on them, and the number is written beside your name by the teller who hands you the paper, and it has been that way at least since 1945 in the UK, so anyone who wants to (like, say, anyone who wanted to know in 1952 who had voted communist so they could keep an eye on them, hem hem) can find out who voted for whom if they want to badly enough.

America really doesn't keep a record? Seriously?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/09/2020 22:03

Actually, given the county whose name I forget where more people voted Republican a couple of elections ago than there were registered voters in the county, maybe no record is kept. Seems like asking for trouble, though.

lionheart · 03/09/2020 22:15

On the soup question: Oxtail.

Lweji · 03/09/2020 22:36

Just not Russian soup, although I'm sure it's perfectly safe. Like their tea, windows and stairs.

Really?

In Portugal all ballots are identical.

But postal votes should be inside two envelopes. The outside one should have the name of the person and/or some form of registry number, so that it can be crossed out on a list like for voters on the day, no?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/09/2020 22:51

It is really true that in England (don't know about Wales and Scotland) ballot papers and their counterfoil are numbered, and that number is recorded against your name when the paper is handed to you.

The reason given if a teller asks why that should be is "so we can prosecute people who write obscenities on their paper" -- and if you believe that, I have a bridge I'd love to sell you. I will just mention that I have never in over fifty years heard of anyone being prosecuted for that reason.

askingquestionsallthetime i am in scotland and when i go to vote at my polling station in any election i go in and give my name and address and my ballot paper is handed to me and my name scored out so that its recorded ive been there. 'When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.'

Not a happy bunny.

Trump Angrily Denies Report He Called Fallen Soldiers ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’
The report, in The Atlantic, could be problematic for the president because he is counting on strong support among the military for his re-election bid.
www.nytimes.com/2020/09/04/us/politics/trump-veterans-losers.html

...Marching over to reporters under the wing of Air Force One after returning from a campaign rally, a visibly angry Mr. Trump rebutted a magazine report that he decided against visiting a cemetery for American soldiers in France in 2018 because he feared the rain would mess up his hair and he did not believe it was important to honor the war dead.

“If people really exist that would have said that, they’re lowlifes and they’re liars,” Mr. Trump shouted above the noise of the plane’s engines. “And I would be willing to swear on anything that I never said that about our fallen heroes. There is nobody that respects them more.” He added, “What animal would say such a thing?”...

... Mr. Trump insisted on Thursday that it was the weather, not disrespect, that forced the visit to be scrapped. “It was raining about as hard as I’ve ever seen,” he said. “And on top of that, it was very, very foggy. And the helicopter was unable to fly.” To go by ground, he added, the motorcade would have had to wind its way through congested areas of Paris for more than two hours. “The Secret Service told me, ‘You can’t do it,’” he said. “I said, ‘I have to do it. I want to be there.’ They said, ‘You can’t do it.’”

A half-dozen current and former aides to Mr. Trump backed him up with Twitter messages disputing the Atlantic article. “I was actually there and one of the people part of the discussion — this never happened,” wrote Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was then the White House press secretary. “This is not even close to being factually accurate,” added Jordan Karem, the president’s personal aide at the time.

The reported comments about Mr. McCain, though, were consistent with Mr. Trump’s publicly expressed view of the senator. In 2015, while seeking the Republican nomination over Mr. McCain’s opposition, Mr. Trump famously mocked the senator’s military service and five and a half years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, “He’s not a war hero,” Mr. Trump said. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”...

The problem for Trump now is that he has a track record, rather than being an unknown.

It's not things he said or did before as a civilian. It's things while President.

VeryLittleOwl · 04/09/2020 08:28

What worries me is the bookmakers. The markets there are showing a Trump victory and they're often more accurate than the polls.

Check out a Scottish comedian called Janey Godley on YouTube , she gets ripped in to Trump on many occasions, the soup one is very funny.

Heffalooomia · 04/09/2020 11:12

There must be some footage or recording of him calling war heroes losers and suckers?

Roussette · 04/09/2020 11:26

The John McCain view by Trump is on record...

So I believe the rest too
