So we say
Ay.
Bee
Sea
Dee
Ee
Eff
Jee
Aitch. Except we don't. We say 'Haitch'.
Why?
We make the aitch have its own letter as the sound of the word for it
We don't do that with any other letter. Why H?
We don't say 'wubbleyew' do we, It's 'doubleyew'?
I don't understand it.

I judge people who say haitch. It is like nails down a blackboard.

formerbabe · 01/09/2020 22:52

I say Aitch not Haitch

I also have no idea what you're on about really

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2020 22:52

I don't say 'haitch', I say 'aitch'.

Batfinklestein · 01/09/2020 22:52

I don’t, I say Aitch. Because that’s how it’s supposed to be pronounced.
Haitch really winds me up!

RiseoftheSeahorse · 01/09/2020 22:53

Speak for yourself. I say aitch.

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/09/2020 22:53

I also said aitch.

Merryoldgoat · 01/09/2020 22:54

What?

heartonastring · 01/09/2020 22:55

Is it a regional dialect thing? Some people say aitch, others say Haitch. I think this is why it's important to teach our children phonics.

AliTheMinx · 01/09/2020 22:55

It's definitely "aitch". I visibly cringe when people say "haitch". Awful.

Miriel · 01/09/2020 22:56

I say haitch.

Someone once told me that the way you say it is a Catholic/Protestant shibboleth, although I don't know how true that actually is.

PiratePetespajamas · 01/09/2020 22:56

Aitch, sorry.

CareBear50 · 01/09/2020 22:56

Huge connotations in NI. Generally speaking, Catholics say Haitch, protestants day Aitch.

If you want to know someone's background, ask them to spell "hat" lol

tiredanddangerous · 01/09/2020 22:57

It's aitch

Miriel · 01/09/2020 22:58

That's it, CareBear50! Makes sense now - it was a Donegal relative who told me.

felineflutter · 01/09/2020 22:58

Aitch

Thatbliddywoman · 01/09/2020 22:58

I say aitch! I've just noticed most humans don't!

OP posts:
HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/09/2020 22:59

Haitchh is a legitimate variation. I tend to err toward haitch, aitch sounds weird to me.

chitofftheshovel · 01/09/2020 22:59

I say haitch with a silent aitch.

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/09/2020 23:00

People are dreadful about ‘Haitch’-sayers on Mumsnet. It’s tantamount to murder!

kursaalflyer · 01/09/2020 23:01

I say 'feff' for F, doesn't everyone?

ChocoholicMama · 01/09/2020 23:01

It's aitch... Got that drummed into me as a kid so pronouncing it haitch drives me nuts.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 01/09/2020 23:01

I say “aitch”. I know it’s snobby but I also find “haitch” like nails down a blackboard.

I’m Catholic though! (not from NI, so probably not significant).

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/09/2020 23:02

W looked like two Us put together. In French it translates as "double V".

QuentinWinters · 01/09/2020 23:02

I have no idea what the op means. What do you mean we make H have its own sound? ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

HopeClearwater · 01/09/2020 23:03

We don't do that with any other letter

Yes we do.
H, W (your own example) and Y ... that’s just off the top of my head.
What’s your issue, anyway? The name of the letter H is pronounced ‘aitch’. Haitch may seem correct to you - but you’d just be wrong.
