So we say
Ay.
Bee
Sea
Dee
Ee
Eff
Jee
Aitch. Except we don't. We say 'Haitch'.
Why?
We make the aitch have its own letter as the sound of the word for it
We don't do that with any other letter. Why H?
We don't say 'wubbleyew' do we, It's 'doubleyew'?
I don't understand it.

Hold on. You said JEE I say Jy/Ji

SummerSummerSummertime · 01/09/2020 23:27

Sounds fine to say Haitch if you're Irish. It's a regional thing.

But it sounds really awful in a London accent though. Because it's just WRONG!!!

peakygal · 01/09/2020 23:27

I say H 😂 also is it Zee or Zed?

ulanbatorismynextstop · 01/09/2020 23:28

It's zed, zee is very American.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 01/09/2020 23:29

Aitch sounds cockney. I always thought Haitch sounded more proper.

crunchypeanutbutterontoast · 01/09/2020 23:30

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say ‘NHS’ with a haitch. Rolls off the tongue easier as an aitch surely? Could be wrong though.

safariboot · 01/09/2020 23:31

The letter name is originally aitch. Haitch is a hypercorrection.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 01/09/2020 23:32

It’s aitch in England. The examples you gave are bonkers though and don’t really support your argument! W starts with a D and the W is pronounced at the end, like the H in aitcH.

Etinox · 01/09/2020 23:33

We have this battle in my family. DD1 aitch posh, Anglican
DD2 haitch tattooed and trendy, cultural Catholic
DS will say whatever will wind up whichever sister needs a prod.

Pluckedpencil · 01/09/2020 23:34

The Italians call It "acca" (pronounced ak-ka). The Latin was accha, hence our name, aitch.
Catullus 84 is actually a Latin joke about this very phenomenon. Even the ancient Romans affected being more worldly and "Greek" by hyperusing the letter "h"!!
I'm sure aitch is a victim of this hyperuse!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 01/09/2020 23:34

The one that gets me is when people say GBHaitch or ABHaitch for causing a person injury. That’s just really wrong! (Obviously so is assaulting people!)

HalloBrian · 01/09/2020 23:35

I'm really confusing myself now. I sing haitch in ABC song,

But I say N Aitch S.

And now I've said both versions too many times trying to figure it out and neither sound right. 😕

Pluckedpencil · 01/09/2020 23:36

Apologies, hypercorrection, not hyperuse!

Duemarch2021 · 01/09/2020 23:37

Is it not meant to be Haitch!??? I always thought it was!?

Chloemol · 01/09/2020 23:38

Who cares, both are ok

HellsAngel81 · 01/09/2020 23:39

I say haitch. I'm Devonian though, so could be a regional thing?

Cam2020 · 01/09/2020 23:41

I don't say haitch.

Whitneylilyrose · 01/09/2020 23:41

Haycha

TwinkleRocks · 01/09/2020 23:42

@Chloemol

Who cares, both are ok

Apart from Haitch of course.

Very witty article on this very subject if you have five minutes to kill!

Tunnocks34 · 01/09/2020 23:43

I say aitch, but I have a thick Manc accent and I don’t pronounce H as a general rule so...

Tigger03 · 01/09/2020 23:44

I’ve thought about it too much now and think I do both?! N - aitch - S, GB-aitch but would spell hat haitch-at.

Catholic NW background!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/09/2020 23:46

It's definitely aitch.

Aitch is one of only two 5-letter words in the English language from which you can remove 4 of the letters and they are still pronounced exactly the same.

I know the other one. Smile
