Am just watching an old Masterchef episode and one of the contestants is doing Greek food that I’ve never heard of.
It also got me thinking about when a friend cooked me something called pinacculty (if that’s how it’s spelled)?

Tell me about your lesser known local food specialities.

@sashh I remember polony but S Wales not Yorkshire and it's still in supermarkets I think ?

Very pink

DarkMintChocolate · 03/09/2020 14:36

We used to eat polony in Derbyshire.

thenaughtyone · 03/09/2020 21:24

@30not13 don't count on it! I reckon by the time you're getting married you're sick to death of pork pie Grin

thenaughtyone · 03/09/2020 21:25

@MulticolourMophead now that I can believe. Lovely place, amazing food.

millymoo1202 · 03/09/2020 21:28

Stovies! Delicious

Hippee · 03/09/2020 21:35

Calic0 - I have a great recipe for Fat Rascals - my husband likes them better than the Betty's one. Would you like it?

Calic0 · 03/09/2020 21:37

@Hippee - that would be AMAZING!

Vilanelle · 03/09/2020 21:39

Faggots, peas, chips and gravy

Lincslady53 · 03/09/2020 21:41

Haslet, proper Lincolnshire sausages and proper Melton Mowbray Pork pies- despite my user name, I was born in Melton and moved over the border to Lincs when I was 4, so I am allowed delicacies from both counties.

ScarMatty · 03/09/2020 21:44

Stottie

Lincslady53 · 03/09/2020 21:45

My first job in the 70s was with Sainsburys in London. 2 things I loved but cant find in any of our local stores outside of the SE are Liver Sausage, the basic grey stuff, not the continental version, and plain, cooked pork loin, like ham but sweeter. Can anyone in London let me know if either are still available? Thank you.

@ThursdayLastWeek

This thread is basically a list of regional dishes.
Yes. That's what op asked for Confused.
Hippee · 03/09/2020 21:46

Calic0 Here's the Fat Rascal recipe:

8oz SR flour
4 oz butter/marg
4oz demerara sugar
4oz mixed fruit
1 tsp mixed spice
1 beaten egg plus a little milk to mix

Pre-heat oven to Gas 4/180
Rub in butter and flour.
Mix other ingredients in
Form into balls (I do about 12 small ones) and decorate with cherries (and almonds, if wanted)

Cook on baking paper on a tray for around 20 mins until golden brown. Sprinkle with more demerara sugar while still hot.

Lincslady53 · 03/09/2020 21:49

Now I have read the thread I see others like haslet. There is a pork butchers in Grantham, Watkins, that does brilliant haslet with a nice hard crust, good sausage and OK pork pies if you can't get to Melton.

Hippee · 03/09/2020 21:54

@thecatsatonthewall

Does England really do regional dishes? sure a few types of cake or sausage (usually widely available) but its hardly France/Italy

Regional Cheeses definately..

Chicchicchicchiclana - I think ThursdayLastWeek was responding to this comment.
Calic0 · 03/09/2020 22:07

@Hippee thank you! And hope others on the thread not familiar with the delights of Fat Rascals will be tempted to give them a go Grin

Hippee · 03/09/2020 22:20

Calic0 - they aren't quite as dense as the Betty's ones - more like a rock cake - but the spice flavours are quite similar (I use the Schwartz mixed spice - I used a supermarket one once and it wasn't as good a flavour). Might have to make some tomorrow. Also, saves me a fortune because we live in a town that has Betty's Grin

SingleHandSue · 03/09/2020 22:20

Butter buns 🤤

Shrewsbury biscuits - but the proper ones, thin, light and lemony not the awful thick ones with fruit you get in hotel rooms.

ThatDamnScientist · 03/09/2020 22:22

Butter pie

MadamShazam · 03/09/2020 22:25

A haggis roll with loads of butter, scotch pies, and proper soft, crumbly scottish tablet ❤

MadamShazam · 03/09/2020 22:28

And lorne sausage, I could eat it every day!

sunsalutations · 03/09/2020 22:46

Selkirk Bannock from the Scottish Borders. A dense fruit bread. Yum!

8thArmouredBrigade · 03/09/2020 23:31

North West:
Yes to proper Butter Pies
Yes to Manchester Tart
Yes to Vimto

But what about a ‘Babbies Yed’? (Or even better - a ‘Babbies Yed Afloatin’)
I’ll let you ponder those two 😀

LooseleafTea · 03/09/2020 23:35

Please can someone start up a restaurant chain with a selection of all these regional things to try as I’m disappointed how many I have to Google! I love all the descriptions that save me having to and need a glossary!

It’s really annoying as now I’m hungry when I was perfectly happily settled for sleep

SweatyBetty20 · 03/09/2020 23:43

@8thArmouredBrigade - definitely yes to a Babbies Yed! But only if it’s floating on gravy, not mushy peas.
