To think going on holiday at the moment is selfish and unnecessary

I think it’s totally unnecessary and selfish for people to go abroad on holiday at the moment. I’m not talking about people that need to go abroad for other reasons, such as ,work or to see ill relatives etc. I think getting our children back to school trumps a holiday.
However, lots of family and friends are going away abroad for holidays, do others agree with me or am I being unreasonable?

I would travel to France or Spain (by ferry and remain outside the whole journey to France, or use my cabin if Spain, before returning to my uncontaminated car) to stay in self catering accommodation. I wouldn't get on a plane at the moment, nor would I stay in an hotel. I'm not obsessive, but DH is vulnerable, so I would be careful to restrict opportunities for him to contract any infection. He is awesomely grumpy when he's poorly.

malificent7 · 30/08/2020 17:55

Lots of economies rely on tourism...for that reason i think yabu. However, people who don't quaratine are also bu.

SantaClaritaDiet · 30/08/2020 18:01

@Bwlch

If you think that the UK will magically become self-sufficient and borders will genuinely and fully be closed, you will be very disappointed

I think the point being made was that you wouldn't actually be able to relocate if the borders are closed because the borders would be closed.

I know, but the idea of a full lockdown is not realistic, is it. Even during the last one people were still able to travel between countries and genuine border closure for years on end is not possible.

I am astounded that in the midst of the biggest health threat we have seen in most of our lives, people are so obsessed with going abroad.......risking transmission, illness, quarantine.

Just Why?

Holidaying in the UK makes much more sense, a break with many fewer risks.

what do you base your idea about "fewer risks" on exactly?

Most of us are not obsessed, we just get on with it.

Some of us have had "it", dealt with "it", quarantine on return is not an issue, weighed up the pros and cons of going abroad for a holiday (including losing a three figure sum if we cancel) and come the the conclusion that the risk is minimal to us and everybody else, so why not go.

Walkaround · 30/08/2020 18:15

@OverTheRainbow88 - aren’t we lucky those irresponsible tourists who got coronavirus on Zante were on a flight, where track and trace is easy, rather than on a train heading back from Cornwall?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 30/08/2020 18:17

Why would a holiday cause a spike
More than
Going to Tesco
Travelling to work
Etc ?
Genuinely curious

Aragog · 30/08/2020 18:19

Holidaying in the UK makes much more sense, a break with many fewer risks.

Can you list some of the main differences between them where the risk is reduced?

Bear in mind many people travel abroad without using an airport or taking a flight, and don't stay in big beach based hotel resorts.

RealBecca · 30/08/2020 18:27

Yabu because it's none of your business

northprincess · 30/08/2020 18:37

Utterly selfish to go abroad and get on a plane.

How?

I had no contact with anyone other than my household in our isolated rental in France. We went to the supermarket as little as possible. EVERYONE in France wears a mask and sanitises their hands on trolley on entrance to the supermarket or they aren’t allowed in (unlike U.K.). All staff wear masks (unlike U.K.).

We drove there and back. Fuel stops were pay at pump (gloves & sanitiser used).

Area we were in has had less than 50 cases. Area I live has had THOUSANDS.

Far safer there than here!

Did you not need to stop for loo breaks? Sleep somewhere to break up the journey etc?

@OverTheRainbow88 - and if you, eg, drive to a holiday in the Lake District from the South of England? How is that safer? At least France is less densely populated, so if you were that paranoid, there would be far more opportunities to stop and pee in the fresh air...

ZooKeeper19 · 30/08/2020 18:57

@OverTheRainbow88 don't think you'll get the response you are looking for here. 1. look who is in charge of this country, then 2. -> he was peoples' choice, then -> 3. MN is also "people".

Whilst this may be a massive oversimplification, from the majority of responses it is "how will holiday of A affect schools of B, C, D..." or "it is way safer than going to the UK" or similar responses. It just is not hitting home here in the UK.

They want to clap for NHS on Thursday and then fly off to Ibiza Friday morning. Partially I also blame the media, it was not covered well enough, the government is a standing joke so it's a ship without a captain just sailing over the cliff.

Now the virus is here to stay, yes, and we cannot be on lockdown forever, yes, and we need a break, yes... but surely not going to a seaside one year will not mean the UK will end up in mental breakdown.

As long as your willing to quarantine or catch covid 19 then fill yr boots.

HeronLanyon · 30/08/2020 19:03

I honestly don’t even understand how people are travelling abroad on holiday (partic where flights are involved).
I feel as though I am in some parallel universe when I see media reports of minor celebs from Eg Ibiza (I know it extremely well and would love to be there). I can’t imagine flying anywhere in holiday.
I’m not sure I think it selfish. I do think it hedonistic and risky. Actually I think I do think it selfish.
Trouble is there are those whose mental health is shot to f and for whom I do think proper get away is more important than for others. I kind of respect that for some.
The ‘deserving’ few - now o sound like paternalistic Victorian Moraliser.
Hmmm

^ This. The PP preferred to have a dig.

I'd quite like to be where my family live but the borders there are all closed and will be for some time.

@ZooKeeper19 - Given that currently the UK overall has lower rates of covid 19 than Spain, France, Denmark and a greatmany other European countries, and Latin American counties, and the US, you really need to widen your criticisms if that’s how you feel.

ellentree · 30/08/2020 19:06

We came home from Cyprus on Friday. It was amazing. We were tested before we went (a requirement for entry) and have no regrets. We have followed all guidelines (for both countries) properly and make no apologies for continuing to do so. Not sure what more can be expected of people!

I8toys · 30/08/2020 19:08

YABVU - Just back from Dubrovnik and Split. It was a wonderful break that we all needed. Very quiet.

My home town however is packed with people and I can barely socially distance anywhere.

Walkaround · 30/08/2020 19:10

Talking of the US, closing its borders to other countries did FA good to the covid case rate there.

This. Not really bothered about how 'selfish' judgemental arses think it is, either. Not a gram of fuck given.
