to think you can wear white to a wedding

...if you are a man.

I have just discovered DP thinks that men have to wear a coloured shirt to a wedding, because guests are not allowed to wear white. He's convinced and with a normal coloured (grey/blue) suit it is a huge faux pas to wear a white shirt.

AIBU to think that men can wear white shirts and it's only white dresses that are a no-no?

Yup. White shirt is absolutely fine.

PastramiNoRye · 28/08/2020 11:36

I don't think anyone is going to mistake your DP for the bride if he wears a white shirt...

Queenoftheashes · 28/08/2020 11:40

Erm yes he needs to be advised of the reasoning behind the rule

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2020 11:41

No, he can’t wear a white shirt of people will mistake him for the bride

NailsNeedDoing · 28/08/2020 11:43

Bless him! 😂 Good on him for trying to fit in with wedding etiquette! But you’re right, of course he can wear a white shirt.

FunorFitness · 28/08/2020 11:50

Grin how funny! Bless him, yea he can get away with a white shirt but he better keep his jacket on for the ceremony incase the vicar gets confused and he ends up married to the groom.

julybaby32 · 28/08/2020 11:59

Lots of white shirts at our wedding!
I would suggest your husband avoids a white lacy dress for the occasion however.
Smiling at his concern to not offend others though, he sounds a nice chap and rather like my DH in some ways.

unicornpower · 28/08/2020 12:01

Oh bless him! yeah he can 100% wear a white shirt. Unlike my MIL who decided to wear an ivory dress.

HoppingPavlova · 28/08/2020 12:08

He thinks if he wears a men’s suit (navy, charcoal, grey) with a white shirt that people will mistake him for the bride? Okay.

bravotango · 28/08/2020 12:09

No, he can’t wear a white shirt of people will mistake him for the bride

Lweji · 28/08/2020 12:13

🤣🤣🤣

It will depend on the type of wedding, but a coloured shirt would be more informal, wouldn't it?

Ponoka7 · 28/08/2020 12:17

Pale coloured shirts usually look better, so I think that's why more men go for them. Unless the wedding is very formal and they have one suit/shirt combo for weddings/funerals/court.

Ginkypig · 28/08/2020 12:17

I'd think he was trying to emulate the 80's with a white suit but I wouldn't notice a white shirt!

Decentsalnotime · 28/08/2020 12:18

Has he never been to a wedding before?

Why don’t you google wedding images

He doesn’t sound sharpest tool in the box

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2020 12:19

Don’t be mean, I think he sounds lovely
My DH is really really intelligent in a lot of ways but a bit clueless about this sort of thing

Florencex · 28/08/2020 12:20

He can wear a white shirt without breaching any etiquette. I would go for coloured though as I think it is nicer.

SantaClaritaDiet · 28/08/2020 12:22

There's always the risk to be confused with a waiter if he wears a bow tie, but apart from that Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/08/2020 12:24

Unless he’s a Daniel Craig lookalike no ones looking at him anyway so he doesn’t need to worry.

Quire · 28/08/2020 12:26

Did you ask him, very slowly, why he might imagine there is a Total Ban on White at weddings? Does he think he'll be struck by lightning, or indeed a rogue wedding planner, if he so much as carries a white tissue about his person?

Etinox · 28/08/2020 12:28
Grin Awww
fizzybootlace · 28/08/2020 12:30

Its sweet that has even thought about it! My wedding was black tie so 100% of men in white shirts! And three women wore white/ivory - two were black and one a size 6 so no confusion caused over who was the bride Grin

RoseGoldEagle · 28/08/2020 12:57

As long as he doesn’t also wear a white skirt and veil then he should be ok!

NameChange84 · 28/08/2020 13:24

White shirt = fine for a man

White tux... nope

White dress/jumpsuit/other ensemble - only if you are an attention seeking dickhead.

Thelnebriati · 28/08/2020 13:26

So he heard 'don't wear white to a wedding because you shoudn't upstage the bride' and thought it was about his shirt?

Yeahnahmum · 28/08/2020 13:28

Cute 😄
