... and leave the rest of us to get on with the work of figuring out how to open up social spaces in a safe way without being distracted by your egocentric tedious freedom fighting? Why do you want to crowd people and breathe all over them anyway? If you don't want to be out and about without doing so, just stay at home. We've got enough to do right now and don't need your nonsense.

@Bupkis

It is great when people lay out their true colours for all to see.
Absolutely

And i dont give a shiny shit if other people dont wear a mask

I assume there is a reason for it

But this snide ‘I’m so clever’ attitude is very tiresome

But...name noted and i look forward to future parenting threads 😀

For all the covid deniers, France is expanding mask requirement and Germany have fines for those not wearing masks.

FWIW, I do wear a mask in public places and I'm happy to do so, but this thread made my eyes do 360's in my skull after reading a page of posts. Just leave people alone and get on with your lives. There will always be risk going out in public places, and if you can't handle that, then the best option is for you to stay home and not socialise. Manage your own risk instead of jumping down other people's throats if you perceive them to not be doing enough. You have no idea what their circumstances are. You can't control other people and no amount of ranting posts on Mumsnet will change that.

PhilCornwall1 · 27/08/2020 16:46

Germany have fines for those not wearing masks.

So does this country, as Johnson was so keen to point out. The fly in the ointment there is, the Police won't enforce them, so his threats on fining are empty.

DarkMintChocolate · 27/08/2020 16:48

ITA. There’s a percentage of the population, who are self centred with no thought of the unspoken social rules - the ones, who go to A & E for a cold, or call an ambulance to change a lightbulb. Everybody must know by now the risks of Covid 19, and if they don’t care, then they are not going to change their behaviour, because of people like OP on Mumsnet! We all have to do our own risk assessments of where we go - either we accept it or stay at home!

loulouljh · 27/08/2020 16:52

For goodness sake get a sense of perspective.....what about the people dying from flu..far exceeding the covid deaths currently.

If you are worried you should stay at home. Let everyone else rebuild their lives and the economy. There is far more to life than worrying about Covid. Really there is.

Fruityloopyloop · 27/08/2020 16:57

@Teal99

Not so much don't like it or don't want to, more that I don't believe they work or are necessary for the amount of cases - they are being touted now as the great protectors to get people spending, a material placebo for the worried and those who just do what they are told without looking at the evidence for themselves. WHO, the scientists and the politicians have flip flopped over this issue - they are no good, don't wear them to now, yes wear them now that the pandemic is over.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I've been into town today and had my mask on in the first shop but then got sick of it and noticed quite a few others not wearing them so I took it off and didn't bother wearing it.

The rules are ridiculous anyway, for example we went into Starbucks, as we wanted to sit in we had to fill in the form for T&T and didn't need to wear a mask. Yet we are stood in the same queue to order as others who were getting take out and so had no need to fill in a form and had to keep their masks on. I mean wtf!! We're all in the same space breathing the same air, just some with and some without masks🤯

LiberteEgaliteBeyonce · 27/08/2020 17:13

My mind boggles. Are the conspiracy theorists out today?
Yes, wearing a mask is pain in the arse, I fucking hate it. And there is some evidence that wearing one might help to limit Covid contamination, this evidence exists (cue link please- who website).
But it's science, right? And science is not and never will be "fixed" knowledge because it is based on verifiable facts. Research on Covid is very new so findings are new. What was looking true yesterday may not be true today. It is not because science is unreliable but quite the opposite: scientists try and test what is observed and validate it or not.
What was first observed may have been anecdotal and now we might be getting to a stage where observations, having been tested happen to be true or not.
If wearing a mask for a while means that our kids can go back to school, then let's have it and stop fucking moaning about it.
And if turns out that wearing a mask was for nothing, then at least we tried something.

Bupkis · 27/08/2020 17:17

If you are worried you should stay at home.

Why do people keep saying this?! Listen to yourselves...
'Sections of society who are more vulnerable to Covid - stay at home! We demand to exercise our right to not wear a face covering occasionally!!"
It's hardly, ''It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done", is it.

Teal99 · 27/08/2020 17:27

Nobody is moaning about wearing a mask. I am not wearing one, but not moaning about it. Just made a decision not to wear one. I am not one of life's rule breakers, but I am for this. Would probably have worn a mask if instructed to at the start, even if it was made from an old t-shirt. We were told not to. I have made my own judgement. I no longer have any faith in the politicians or the scientists. They are contradicting each other, breaking the rules themselves, cascading confusing guidelines. Make your own mind up. If you agree that masks are effective, don't worry about those who aren't wearing them. I am willing to keep my distance, sing two renditions of Happy Birthday per hand wash, and stay in a bubble. But that's it. But no moaning, just getting on with life but with a face covering as per normal.

Teal99 · 27/08/2020 17:28

Without a face covering, that should have read in my final sentence

Madhairday · 27/08/2020 17:50

The problem is that those of us who are medically exempt are getting the abuse aimed towards the mask refusers and therefore feel really uncomfortable when out and about just in case. I've been out more this week since March (was shielding) but thankfully no one said anything when I was in indoor spaces that required masks. I did however very carefully social distance by a wide margin, I would never get up close to people. But I cannot wear a mask. I've tried and I can't breathe, so does that mean I should stay in? It kind of goes with the narrative I keep hearing about shielding people needing to stay hidden away so the rest of the world can get on with life. It makes shielding people feel worthless and their MH outcomes are getting far worse through all of this.

So what's the answer when some really are exempt?

Hopoindown31 · 27/08/2020 18:04

So many epidemiologists on this thread explaining how masks won't help. Quite amazing. I'm surprised you aren't all too busy advising the government to post on here.

Of course this is entirely to be expected in this country at the moment. Our government took ages to decide to require mask wearing and then when it finally does, lots of people decide not to wear them anyway! We really do get the politicians we deserve.

I wear one and I tell anyone without one in a shop that gets too close to me to back off in no uncertain terms. I appreciate there are a very small minority of people who can't manage to wear a mask, such as shame that there are many more people just ignoring the advice and next to no enforcement of it anyway.

It shouldn't be happening to you and I don't know what the answer is, but imo the mask refusers without exemptions are fuelling hostility. I wouldn't dream of challenging anyone as I respect exemptions but if I were to actually hear someone say publicly that they weren't wearing a mask because they just didn't want to and no one could do anything about it I'm not sure what my reaction would be.

Spain/France - super strict mask wearing rules for ages, case numbers rocketing, on quarantine list

Italy - no compulsory masks in most areas all along, stopped being compulsory in northern Italy weeks ago - cases under control, not on quarantine list.

Masks are a placebo and a distraction and make people think they are safe to carry on as normal otherwise, which they are not.

People have pretty much stopped bothering with social distancing inside and out in the UK now: mask in shops and buses box is ticked so that’s fine. It drives me mad.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 27/08/2020 18:38

Italy have reported the highest number of cases since May today. It’s all in the news

And maybe look at the reasons suspected why Spain has had such a surge in numbers mainly with young people

I would suggest you read the news before posting and making yourself look stupid with claims masks are a placebo

And evidence as to why EXPERTS in the field of viruses studies believe that masks should be worn.

Perhaps you should keep up with recent developments.

"Meanwhile Italy, which had some of the lowest case totals in Europe after reopening its economy, registered 1,367 cases - its largest rise since May."

PablosHoney · 27/08/2020 19:15

I think people who harass those for not wearing a mask are twats as are people who comment on those wearing them.

ILoveFood87 · 27/08/2020 19:29

Completely agree I know people have conditions where they can't wear a mask but how in the world is that my bloody fault!? Why should I have you breathing on me because you can't wear a mask. I'm protecting you by wearing one and in return you are breathing down my bloody kneck. Annoying. If they keep their distancing fair enough but I've had ones that don't or whose bloody kids don't.

Teal99 · 27/08/2020 19:37

You also have people who wear masks who think they no longer have to social distance. Who get up and personal

itsgettingweird · 27/08/2020 19:52

@BonnieMcflurry

But I am pleased with myself Who would want to wear one them horrible masks that make social interaction impossible and what horrible world it would be for our kids to grow up in
Kids who grow up in the world where people wear burkas manage. 🤷‍♀️
itsgettingweird · 27/08/2020 19:55

@AnyFucker

There must be somethimg about the Co op. It's a Covid- free zone, obvs
Yeah mine too. And the sandwich shop.

Mainly I find it's builders. We have lots around here and they nip in and out throughout the day.

Stupid thing is they wear masks for so much if the work they have to do!

It's interesting but makes in construction were recorded as one of the highest occupational death due to Covid in a report a read a few months ago.

You do wonder sometimes what's risk and what's coincidence of behaviour.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 27/08/2020 20:08

YABU - there is no requirement to wear masks in public spaces. I’m perfectly entitled to walk down the street or around the local park without wearing one. In fact most of the places you are expected to wear masks are private spaces which are open to the public. At least get your facts straight before launching into your virtue signalling rant Hmm

1940s · 27/08/2020 20:14

Fully agree with you @Frenchpastry

Ethelfleda · 27/08/2020 20:18

[quote Fruityloopyloop]@CaptainMonkey

How is what @Frenchpastry posted "childish blather"? She has a valid point.

"You're halting progress and we've got work to do" wtf?.

It's people like you who are obviously terrified of Covid who are halting progress. Maybe the likes of you should stay home in your safe bubble and allow others to live their lives without having to be constantly doused in ineffective sanitiser and wearing pointless bloody masks.
