To ask how many driving lessons before you passed your test?

Hi everyone. I'm starting driving lessons in a few weeks and am wondering how long it took for you all to pass? My dad has very kindly offered to pay for the first 26 hours worth of lessons (2 hours, once a week) and then in will be funding them myself. So hoping not too long! :) Thank you

I only had about 15 lessons x 1 hour, spread out over about 18 months, but was lucky I think.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on

riotlady · 25/08/2020 16:07

I took about 50-60 hours I think, in an automatic, which is obv a bit easier- I struggled a lot with my instructor though and had a lot of delays in doing my test, and didn’t have access to a car to practice between lessons.

Cabinfever10 · 25/08/2020 16:07

A good rule of thumb is 1 for every year old you are plus 5 (unless you're my sis who has failed 22 tests)
Good luck

DrDetriment · 25/08/2020 16:09

I had 15 in the couple of months after I turned 17 and passed my test 4 months after my birthday.

custardbear · 25/08/2020 16:12

I had weekly lessons that were 1.5 hours, passed after 2.5 months - so approximately 15 hours i think

Thanks everyone! :) Cabinfever I'm 28, so to pass with 32 hours would be amazing, and anything less than that a bonus :)

Probably over 100. I failed my test NINE times. Finally passed on my 10th try and I actually cried and the driving examiner got very uncomfortable. Lol!

Nix2020 · 25/08/2020 16:16

I don't even remember, I passed my test on tenth attempt. By the end my instructor was charging half price.

Glad I kept going, was worth it in the end

cannotbebotheredanymore · 25/08/2020 16:17

Oh also - I was a good driver, no issues during my lessons at all. Every time I took a test I was absolutely riddled with anxiety, my legs would shake and I would make really stupid mistakes - once failed not even one minute out of the test centre for pulling out when a bus was indicating. I was prescribed beta-blockers two days before my 10th test, and passed with six minors. If you struggle with anxiety during test situations I’d definitely recommend talking to your GP before spending hundreds on tests! :)

Mustardbay · 25/08/2020 16:17

20 hours, when I was 18 though.

littlealexhorne · 25/08/2020 16:19

I've only just started learning myself, but I've seen a lot that the average is meant to be around 40 hours I think?

VoldemortsKitten · 25/08/2020 16:19

30hrs for me BUT lots of time driving partner's car too with my L plates - do you have access to one to bump up your practice time that way? Good luck, it's such a game changer being able to drive :)

Hingeandbracket · 25/08/2020 16:19

20 - I was 18.

PinkiOcelot · 25/08/2020 16:20

I honestly can’t remember, it was 30 years ago now.
My daughter passed 4 months after her 17th with a lesson a week I think it was.

MouthBreathingRage · 25/08/2020 16:21

Lost count! I had a good 20 odd hours years ago before having give up for personal reasons. Then had 5 months of once-a-week lessons from last October until lockdown (my first test was cancelled for the end of March). Didn't really have lessons as such after restrictions lifted, just a refresher before my test.

So probably about 30ish hours or 50 all in if including ones from several years ago, with no access to another car for practice outside of lessons. I wouldn't rush for a test anyway, it will be very difficult to get one before Christmas the way the DVSA have handled things. Thank goodness I passed over summer!

vanillandhoney · 25/08/2020 16:21

I passed first time, but I started learning at 21 and didn't pass my test until I was 29. I had three instructors in that time, plus practise with my dad and DH.

I'd say probably 60 hours of lessons, plus practise outside of that. I'm certainly not a natural driver though and I struggled badly with anxiety when I was learning.

hibbledobble · 25/08/2020 16:21

I wonder if the people above were practising with relatives in between lessons? Otherwise such low numbers seem rather improbable!

I had a lot, probably in excess of 80 hours, but no car available to practice in between lessons.

Penguinnn · 25/08/2020 16:33

5 months at twice a week.

MurderousChicken · 25/08/2020 16:33

I had about 20 I think, I was 17. My dad used to take us out once each week in between lessons as well, that really is a massive help.

Penguinnn · 25/08/2020 16:34

Sorry that’s two two hour lessons a week for 5 months

Me too ! I’m Am amazed I never gave up

Vivi0 · 25/08/2020 16:35

I can’t remember the exact number, but weekly lessons from January to the end of September (when I passed my test).

SapphosRock · 25/08/2020 17:08

I had about 15 but I was lucky that both my parents took me out every day and got me to do some long and complicated journeys. I found having lots of practice helped me master driving and the lessons prepared me for the actual test.

MeadowHay · 25/08/2020 17:13

I'm about your age and my instructor has advised me I'm likely going to be clocking up 70 or maybe even more hours before I'm test ready. But im autistic, dyslexic and have an anxiety disorder so understandably that's all affecting the pace of my learning, plus having a 4 month gap of no lessons due to covid hasn't helped either. I've had about 45 hrs so far but I couldn't get my theory booked sooner than mid October and even if I pass that I'm guessing the waits for practical driving lessons will be many months itself so we are definitely looking at 2021 now before I can even sit a test. Really frustrating as I started learning Jan 2020 and was blitzing many lessons a week and would otherwise have hopefully been done and dusted by now or at the very least before the end of this year.

Good luck! One of my friends had well over 100 hrs of lessons before she passed and she was only about 20 when she learnt. It varies massively by person.
