To prefer my pet over some family members?

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day and I made a comment about not really being close to some of my family and actually preferring my pet cat to them. My friend was absolutely horrified that I could prefer an ‘animal over humans’ and actually thought I was joking! But thinking about it, I hardly see some family members so have no relationship with them yet I see my cat every day and actually love her!

Not in the slightest. I prefer my pets over loads of humans!

YADNBU. Definitely prefer DDog to several of the in-laws.

Pets are much easier than humans as they can't make nasty comments and answer back! Of course, their conversation is abit limited, but they're so cuddly...at least my dog is.

i love my dog so much that I get upset thinking about when she is not going to be here.
She follows me everywhere, cuddles up to me in bed and can read my mind.

Prefer my cat to heaps of humans. She s cuddly, loves me, doesn't care if I look like shit and we meow at each other sometimes (when i m not having a full blown convo about work and stuff with her).
Good to sleep next to as well. Purrs are better than ex s snoring like a buffalo

You are absolutely not being unreasonable - I prefer all of my animals to my inlaws, and some colleagues - even the hen that pecked me in the eye last week when I was changing her water, and the sheep who regularly knocks me over with her shows of affection (or greediness).

I adore my cat. DH swears blind I love her more than him. Which I deny but...

Our old family cat died very shortly after my DGM (or shortly before, I forget). My Mum genuinely said afterwards she mourned the cat more than her mother. Far less complicated relationship.

YANBU at all. Our lovely, lovely dog died last week. I certainly preferred him to many people, including family members.

Perfectly normal. Pets ask for very little and give bucketloads of unconditional love in return. Reminds me of an old joke:

"Try locking your wife/husband/SO and your dog in a cupboard for a couple of hours and see which one's most pleased to see you when you let them out".

I love my dog more than many humans... I occasionally also think that five or six dogs would be less disruptive to my house than my two children

My dog never lets me down, I love him unconditionally and he loves me the same way. Can’t say the same for some family members so my dog gets my vote every time, he is amazing and makes me happy every day.

I love my cats more definitely. My cats have never let me down.....their live is unconditional

Defiantly not being unreasonable. I prefer the neighbours yappy little dog that I've never met and that drives me mad barking at all hours to some of my relatives.

Totally with you - I love DD DP cats and Ddog - not necessarily in that order .

As far as I'm concerned my DD is simply one of the menagerie, that is, my family, which currently consists of 3 humans and 9 non-humans. I love them all, far more than anyone else (and that definitely includes other human-family members!)

My cat is my favourite person, I think she always will be. Shes clean, cute, doesn’t answer back, tolerates as many cuddles as I want.

People are bastards OP. And cats may piss on your clothes, shit in the house and have fleas. But I STILL prefer them to people. Your friend is a dick.
