To prefer my pet over some family members?

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day and I made a comment about not really being close to some of my family and actually preferring my pet cat to them. My friend was absolutely horrified that I could prefer an ‘animal over humans’ and actually thought I was joking! But thinking about it, I hardly see some family members so have no relationship with them yet I see my cat every day and actually love her!

I grieved more for my first dog than I did my mother. Why.. well I liked the dog, he stuck by me through all manner of things, she certainly did not.

In fact if I am honest, I like our shitty little ratbag blind bitey fucker dog more than I liked my mother - he can't help being a little turd, and I can prevent him upsetting or hurting strangers, the same definitely did not apply to her!

I guess it's hard to understand if you never had a pet. I never really had a pet other than fish/a lobster and neither has DH. Our families never had pets either.

I think there are 'pet people' and non pet people. Non pet people are a rarity in England though so you are in good company.

My cat fecking hates me and DP, bites, hisses and scratches if I try and pick her up and only wants to know me when she's hungry. I still prefer her to a lot of people.

Cats are better than most things in the world.

My Husband and I have agreed that if the fire alarm goes off at night (we sleep in different bedrooms), we both look for the cat first, before each other.

Assumption is - we're more likely to be able to get out the house and if we both aim for the cat, we'll probably bump into each other on the way down the stairs / out the house, anyway......

But yes - The cat has a place at the Christmas Dinner table... his own chair / plate / turkey..... and not all family members are invited Hmm.

YANBU at all! I would throw myself between a speeding bullet and any of my animals.

Yes 100% this! I can admit this because its anonymous but I genuinely felt bigger heartbreak over my dogs death than I did some family members! I also now prefer my cat to most people Blush
