To be irritated / concerned about DH's obsession with Ben Shapiro?

WakingUp55643 · 25/08/2020 11:21

DH spends a lot of time on an evening watching youtube videos. This used to be on his own computer, with headphones, but now he just puts them on the TV and inflicts it on all of us. Yes I should just tell him to pack it in, but the bigger issue here is the type of people he follows obsessively. His latest mancrush is Ben Shapiro. Last night he even watched a video of him as a child playing the violin, ffs. Amongst the other people he admires are Jordan Peterson, Nigel bloody Farage, Laurence Fox, Ann Widdecombe.........
But because I finally snapped and showed my annoyance at this a couple of weeks ago and asked why he chose to sit in the house watching this stuff rather than play out in the garden with his kids (it's always me who plays with them) apparently it's my fault for not 'inviting' him out to join in. And then if I don't respond to his polite chats about how my day has been etc, it's me who's creating an atmosphere.
Am I really being unreasonable by being annoyed at this????! I'm really REALLY trying to be supportive at the moment as he is having real difficulties with anxiety, but honestly it drains the soul out of me. He suggested he would like to go and visit his mum for the weekend (quite a long drive) and I said he could take the car, then last night he announced that he'd changed his mind. I have never been so disappointed. I need a break from this.

YADNU. I hope you manage to get yourself out of this situation. Hopefully soon. Good luck.

thewhitechair · 25/08/2020 13:38

I’ve seen/read bits about him and it seems he’s totally anti-abortion, anti a lot of types of contraception too, against gay marriage and other gay rights, doesn’t believe in letting kids be gender non-conforming etc

DimidDavilby · 25/08/2020 13:40

Not a chance in hell would I share my bed or life with an alt right fanboy. How unappealing.

WakingUp55643 · 25/08/2020 13:44

@TheSultanofPingu to clarify the Ann Widdecombe situation, he's got a signed Brexit Party placard signed by her, on top of our wardrobe..............
Confused

Oh, cringe at the signed Brexit thing.

geekaMaxima · 25/08/2020 13:51

they're still a misogynist if their moral compass can't condone abortion,

No, that's not it at all. People can hold whatever person beliefs they want about abortion; I may not agree, but they have a right to hold that personal belief inside their heads (or "moral compass" if you prefer) and use it to inform their own life decisions.

What makes Shapiro and Peterson misogynists is that they are actively trying to impose their anti-abortion beliefs on other people, specifically women, since women are the ones who require abortion services.

Shapiro and Peterson are campaigning to stop women seeking legal abortions. They are trying to stop women from controlling their own bodies. They are trying to force women into giving birth rather than ending an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy.

That is what makes them misogynists.

geekaMaxima · 25/08/2020 13:56

If being pro-life = misogynistic, there are plenty of misogynistic women out there.

Indeed, indeed can be misogynistic.

Not the women who keep their anti-abortion beliefs inside their heads: they're entitled to hold those views.

But the women who protest outside abortion clinics and campaign to make abortion illegal? Yes, they are misogynists.

Internalised misogyny is a thing.

MangoFeverDream · 25/08/2020 13:57

Nothing wrong with listening to the names you listed, everything wrong with being an anxiety-ridden mess that has to be invited to play with his family. These are the real issues, plus the drip feed about your lack of intimacy

geekaMaxima · 25/08/2020 13:57

Should have said: Indeed, women* can be misogynistic.

peachgreen · 25/08/2020 14:04

also since, if all men treated all women with respect, there wouldn't be any rape or incest in the first place

Those aren't the only reasons for having an abortion and if someone believes they are and attempts to force those beliefs on others then yes, they're a misogynist.

Get him to watch this clip. It really shows how ridiculous Ben Shapiro is.

I’m not a fan especially of Ben Shapiro and my politics differ, however I don’t think he comes out of that interview all that badly and he’s bang on the money about the pointless gladiatorial approach of traditional news media. There’s no spirit of intellectual enquiry and it’s all about throwing someone off balance and getting a gratifying ‘gotcha’ moment. There’s no interest in dialogue or representing someone’s views honestly.

..... gosh Blush

BigChocFrenzy · 25/08/2020 14:19

Extremists of various politics - and religion too - groom vulnerable people online and change them for the worse

It must be very worrying, living with someone being sucked in to whatever cult
and infuriating as it often takes up all their time, so they dump their family responsibilities

QuieterMass · 25/08/2020 14:22

Some couples get on fine despite having differing political views if they still respect each other as people, but OP it sounds like you don't even like your DP.

In my 51 years on the planet that is the singularly most disturbing thing I have ever read.

WakingUp55643 · 25/08/2020 14:49

See @ClementineWoolysocks I just let that go when it arrived in the house. I didn't like it, and I showed I was annoyed, but I still just let it go. I'm too patient for my own good.

Ann Widdecombe. The woman who maintained that female prisoners in labour should be shackled to the bed. Disgusting, hideous woman.

AntsMarching · 25/08/2020 14:53

@WonderHike. I think he comes out badly because he tries to use a tactic to move the conversation by lobbing insults/making accusations to the interviewer. When Neil doesn't take the bait and instead presses forward with his questioning, where he reasonably compared the premise of the book to previous tweets/words of Ben Shapiro, Shapiro gets angry and just becomes personally insulting and then ends the interview.

This is exactly the behaviour Shapiro accuses the other side of doing, he wasn't even aware that Neil and falls on the same side of many arguments as him, he just assumed Neil is on the left because he challenged Shapiro on how his behaviour did not reflect what his book was about. Basically, he couldn't handle actual journalism. And usually, in the US, he doesn't have to, he normally can goad the interviewer into changing tactic, the way he tried to do with Neil.

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 25/08/2020 14:55

I love Andrew Neil totally ripping him to shreds in that interview. Ben Shapiro is a horrible little arsehole

TheSultanofPingu · 25/08/2020 15:45

I wouldn't be able to sleep in a room with a signed Ann Widdecombe placard on top of the wardrobe.

Touca · 25/08/2020 17:07

I'd be long gone.

SimonJT · 25/08/2020 17:10

So he is actually spending time radicalising himself.

salty78 · 25/08/2020 18:46

It annoys me that Jordan Peterson gets lumped in as alt-right when he doesn't profess to any political or religious leanings. Those who think he's alt-right seem to take his writing and speaking out of context. His daughter seems a bit more of a worrying character though.

PhilSwagielka · 25/08/2020 18:59

He should spend less time watching these chodes on Youtube and more time parenting, IMO.

DimidDavilby · 25/08/2020 22:16

You're sleeping under the watchful eyes of Ann Widcombe? Like a cut-out?

I have no words.

And @salty78 Jordan peterson is a raging misogynist who incites hate against Muslims. If it looks like sht and it smells like sht it's probably lying when it says it's not sh*t...
