MIL hogging the living room

alliejay81 · 24/08/2020 19:27

MIL is here (she's in our social bubble). She's currently in our living room watching something on Netflix not suitable for DS so I had to make DS go in the family room.

WIBU to tell her to turn it off? It's not wildly unsuitable think adult themes / language: DS is 11. Not entirely sure why she's watching it, I guess DH must've put it on for her (he's currently mowing the lawn).

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 24/08/2020 21:13

Wonder if the op will return to tell us what it was,,,and is currently sitting kicking her self from admitting her husband put it on..🤣🤣🤣

BoomBoomsCousin · 24/08/2020 21:13

I thought you were going to say about 5 not 11yo. WTH is she watching you have to shield your 11 yo from?!

How low are your boundaries that you think it’s hard to find something that’s unsuitable for an 11 year old?

Almost none of the programs my DH and I watch that we haven’t deliberately chosen to watch with our children are suitable for 11 year olds. The last four series we watched were Game of Thrones, American Gods, Stranger Things and Watchmen. Definitely not family viewing.

Thisismytimetoshine · 24/08/2020 21:14

@ClementineWoolysocks

Is she sat there alone while you and your son are doing other stuff? Jesus, she's a guest, at least talk to her.
It sounds like she's been stuffed in there to keep her out of the way. Your dh was bloody rude to sit her in front of the TV in an empty room and then go and mow the lawn! She probably feels unwelcome in the family room where the rest of you have congregated.
oakleaffy · 24/08/2020 21:18

Doubt if an 11 yr old would even care?!

honeygirlz · 24/08/2020 21:18

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

Is it Human Centipede 2?
There's a HC2? Shock
yolio · 24/08/2020 21:21

Just kill her. And leave no trace.

Pebblexox · 24/08/2020 21:27

Op are you coming back or no?
This is clearly a conversation to have with your dh if he put it on for her. You obviously aren't in agreement as to what's appropriate for your child.
Given you have sent your child to the 'family' room that makes me think you have to seating areas, more than likely with two TVs. Let it go, let mil watch the tv. You've obviously invited her round. It would be incredibly rude to turn off something that's she watching that her son said was okay.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/08/2020 21:30

My dd is 12. She put Peppa Pig on for her friends to watch and i was so surprised that I let slip I thought it was Scottish Peppa Pig so they put that on. Naughty mummy dragon. I sort of stood there and cringed a bit....

BoomboomsCousin
Stranger Things is relatively mild. Most of my dds friends were watching it at 11 - not dd. She liked kid stuff while in primary. GOT agreed with you there. Haven’t watched the other 2.

Arthersleep · 24/08/2020 21:30

Good lord. Whatever happened to being courteous to guests and respecting ones elders?

DeeTractor · 24/08/2020 21:30

"There's a HC2?"

And three.

ShebaShimmyShake · 24/08/2020 21:32

@Arthersleep

MILs are barely human, obviously. They're only guests in the same sense that a house spider is.
Offshoreliving · 24/08/2020 21:32

I'm way too invested in what it was that was unsuitable for an 11 yo but you're able to comfortably watch in from of your son&Dil.

'mon OP what was it??

oakleaffy · 24/08/2020 21:35

Perhaps the butter scene in Last Tango in Paris?
That might not be suitable.

MrsMayo · 24/08/2020 21:36

It's your house. I'd just walk over and switch it off and say that's not suitable.

Bit dramatic, I'm sure your DS is okay in the family room. Chill.

LST · 24/08/2020 21:38

@boomboom GOT isnt on Netflix and Stranger Things would imo be ok for most 11yos in the background. They wouldn't need to leave the room when it was on.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 24/08/2020 21:40

@katy1213

It's your house. I'd just walk over and switch it off and say that's not suitable.
Why do some people seem to hate others so much? WHY would anyone be this much of a dick?
Windyjuly · 24/08/2020 21:43

Glumny, I blame it on the cream carpet brigade and shoes off.

That was the last bastion of being hospitable. Forcing humans to relent to cream carpets.
Now I've entwined the mn classic, shoes on or off with, a Mil dogging in the front room 😂😂. Volcanic mn surely!! Front page of Sydney hearld.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/08/2020 21:47

There's a HC2?"

And three.

Bloody hell, a third one? Shock I watched the first one and it was just foul. MIL is clearly made of sterner stuff. If she gets the sewing kit out - run.

KnobChops · 24/08/2020 21:49

Blimey. I developed my love of horror from watching ‘inappropriate’ films with my grandparents in my formative years. I’m always amazed at the number of kids who have very restricted viewing.

Gingerfish91 · 24/08/2020 21:51

I’m intrigued too! I mean unless it’s pornographic there’s not much on TV I wouldn’t let my kids watch at 11!

LST · 24/08/2020 21:51

@knobchops thank God it's not just me!

MrsMayo · 24/08/2020 21:55

katy1213

You sound a bit mental

Thisismytimetoshine · 24/08/2020 21:58

I'll bet most of his class have seen Stranger Things.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/08/2020 21:58

I feel really sorry for mils sometimes. The poor woman is literally just watching the telly. I'd hate to feel so unwelcome in my son's house.
Posters who would just turn off the TV because it's their house are fucking rude.

Freddiefox · 24/08/2020 22:13

I guess DH must've put it on for her (he's currently mowing the lawn). she probably too scared to turn it over incase it’s the wrong thing to do and she pisses someone off and she’s banished forever.
