MIL hogging the living room

alliejay81 · 24/08/2020 19:27

MIL is here (she's in our social bubble). She's currently in our living room watching something on Netflix not suitable for DS so I had to make DS go in the family room.

WIBU to tell her to turn it off? It's not wildly unsuitable think adult themes / language: DS is 11. Not entirely sure why she's watching it, I guess DH must've put it on for her (he's currently mowing the lawn).

@MitziK

Bearing in mind the stuff I've regularly heard coming out of the mouths of eleven year old boys, there is nothing on TV that an eleven year old boy needs shielding from.
This is true. Particularly something that also appeals to his Granny Grin JUST SAY WHAT IT IS, OP.

@Meatshake

Fiver says it's the new season of Lucifer 🤤 some eye candy for grandma! Get some, girl 😂
Ha! That's probably it 😂
Darkestseasonofall · 24/08/2020 20:43

Jeez you're spoiling for a fight by the sounds of it. Why does MIL watching something in one of your reception rooms cause such an issue? DS is 11, surely he realises not everything is for him.
I'd never dream of telling my MIL off like that (unless I really hated her, which I absolutely don't).

1Morewineplease · 24/08/2020 20:43

Someone said MIL is dogging.
I’ve got me crocheting out.

wildcherries · 24/08/2020 20:44

@Lollee

Maybe she sensed that she isn't welcome and wants to sit quietly watching tv out of the way? I take it the room was empty when she was plonked in there like a child in front of the tv? Otherwise she would have been involved with what you and your son are doing.
Really good point.
Dugsbollox · 24/08/2020 20:45

Get over yourself. She's watching a programme, not hogging the room. If often tell my kids they'll have to watch tv/play their game elsewhere if I want to watch something that isn't suitable.

JamieLeeCurtains · 24/08/2020 20:46

Burn her 🔥

ktp100 · 24/08/2020 20:47

Post watershed programmes shouldn't be on in the day around kids. Could that be more obvious?!

Just tell her you don't want the kids seeing/hearing it and ask her to watch it later.

Unsure33 · 24/08/2020 20:49

Just be kind and say would you mind catching up on that later as it’s not suitable for the children .

She probably is not doing it to be confrontational so just approach it nicely .
Not all MIL are wicked in fact a lot of us end up walking on egg shells as well .

Waveysnail · 24/08/2020 20:49

What programme. Just tb nosey

Porcupineinwaiting · 24/08/2020 20:51

@ktp100 do you never watch anything not suitable for your children, say on a wet Saturdayafternoon? That's normal when they are tiny but not so much when they are 11 years old I think.

TooLittleTooLate80 · 24/08/2020 20:58

Is the show about golf or cycling?

honeygirlz · 24/08/2020 20:58

Not enough info. Is this a daily occurrence? What's the difference between living room and family room? Why can't you ask MIL if you could all watch a family programme?

TrickyD · 24/08/2020 21:01

Amazing the way so many posters pick on their MILs for the most trivial reasons.

QueenArseClangers · 24/08/2020 21:02

Game of Thrones bumming or a rated 12 mild swearing?

CountFosco · 24/08/2020 21:02

Let her watch it, DS at 11 may well go to bed later than his grandmother, and he is fine in the family room. That's the point of two reception rooms.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/08/2020 21:04

Is it Human Centipede 2?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/08/2020 21:04

FFS! You have another living room for your DS to watch TV in, what's the big deal.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/08/2020 21:05

And he's 11, not 4 😂

LST · 24/08/2020 21:05

I thought you were going to say about 5 not 11yo. WTH is she watching you have to shield your 11 yo from?! And if he is ok in the other room what is the problem?!

viques · 24/08/2020 21:08

I'm going to stick my neck out and say it's Drag Race.

Or

Botched Up Bodies. Mind you they always pixilate out gory bits, including nipples. There is a generation of UK kids growing up thinking Americans don't have nipples.

Redlocks28 · 24/08/2020 21:10

Is she staying with you or has she just pitched up and hogged your remote?

SummerPoppies · 24/08/2020 21:10

Unless she's watching a Ron Jeremy special, I would leave her to it.
You have another room to go in so what's the big deal?
Your husband put it on for her, she hardly swept in and demanded that you let her watch it.
Make her a cuppa and occupy yourself in the other room.

ClementineWoolysocks · 24/08/2020 21:11

Is she sat there alone while you and your son are doing other stuff? Jesus, she's a guest, at least talk to her.

Keeva2017 · 24/08/2020 21:11

Come on op answer @QueenArseClangers Grin bumming it swearing Grin
