Pet driving hates. What gets your goat?

For me it's lorries in the middle lane on motorways, driving parallel to another. Yes I know they have deadlines, but miles and miles side by side? 😡

@BrandyandBabycham

I was told once to drive as if everyone else on the road is an idiot. The trouble is, an awful lot of them actually are! My pet hates are people not thanking me for waiting & people who drive way too fast for the conditions. Oh & people who go when it’s not their right of way. I’m mild mannered normally but behind the wheel I get the rage!
I am sure lots of drivers don't have a licence.

I followed a bloke in a Vauxhall Agila yesterday who had random speeds between 20 and 40 in a 50 limit, slammed on the brakes when he saw a car coming the other way and as soon as a corner came into view. He clearly had no idea how to drive and can't have been near an instructor of any kind, much less passed a test. He had a small child unrestrained in the back too.

keepingbees · 24/08/2020 18:11

No one in my town seems to think they need to stop at a roundabout, I'll be driving round it and they'll just sailing along staring straight ahead and slam the brakes on at the last minute if I'm lucky.
Tailgaters when you're doing the speed limit. I used to feel pressured by them but I'm quite happy to ignore them now.

woodhill · 24/08/2020 18:11

@HunterAngel

People who don’t indicate.

People who try to straighten out a roundabout, heedless of the car next to them turning right who has to stand on the brakes just to keep their front wing the shape it started the journey with.

People who get in the lane with the shortest queue, whether it’s the lane they need or not then give verbal abuse to the person who actually got in the correct lane.

Yes to the last point - cfs
StripeyDeckchair · 24/08/2020 18:12

Tailgating

Not indicating

Middle lane hogging on the motorway

Not acknowledging me when I let you in / pass on a narrow street.

Walkers, cyclists, runners etc who dont wear reflective clothing - it should be worn irrespective of the time of day or year you are out. I dont think they realise how easy it is to blend into the background.

Using the phone while driving

Cutting in front of me so sharply that the only way I miss hitting you is by breaking heavily. (Usually men just before the junction on the motorway)

AlwaysLatte · 24/08/2020 18:16

And people who assume you're just going to move over to let them join a motorway, instead of judging their speed to find a gap. I always move over if I can to let them in but there's a spot I drive regularly where the incoming traffic is immediately before an exit which I take (literally where the first marker for the exit is 3.2.1) There's always a lot of traffic joining there so if I pull out there's no way I can get back in without missing my exit.

noss24 · 24/08/2020 18:18

Short journeys by car by people who are perfectly able to walk but just too lazy. Taking up road space and delaying buses, delivery drivers, key workers and those who genuinely need to travel.

Macncheeseballs · 24/08/2020 18:19

Cars driving too close to me when I'm cycling, and cutting me up and generally endangering my life.

ThereIsNoSuchThingAsRoadTax · 24/08/2020 18:19

I'm with you on cyclists. IMO anyone using the roads should pay road tax and be insured. I include horses in that too

There isn't a single person on the road who has paid road tax because it does not exist.

Motorists who don't understand that their presence on the road is tolerated under license whereas other road users have a right to be there.

noodlezoodle · 24/08/2020 18:20

People who stop to let you out of a side road then get narky when you don't go... because there's something coming the other way. So annoying!

Potterpotterpotter · 24/08/2020 18:20

That’s a poor set up..

What if there is no gap for them to pull into at rush hour ?

GroupSects · 24/08/2020 18:21

People who can’t stay in their own lane on a roundabout. Had one lady drift over into my lane going round a roundabout and then have the audacity to beep me! She got a few choice words I can tell you, she wouldn’t even look at me by the time I’d done with her. What do you think the lines on the road are for??

People who stop dead at roundabouts when you can see perfectly well there this is NOTHING COMING! Use your eyes 👀

People who brake hard and THEN indicate.

fishonabicycle · 24/08/2020 18:24

People using their phones while driving (wankers), people who are too lazy to indicate (twats), people who sit in one lane on the motorway all the time (tossers).

ArsenicNLace · 24/08/2020 18:25

People who don't seem to understand yellow box junctions. They drive into them then block all the oncoming traffic.

Drives me crazy. Angry

Macncheeseballs · 24/08/2020 18:25

Drivers who say they hate all cyclists give me the fear

dwiz8 · 24/08/2020 18:26

I will also add people who put their hand up to say sorry/thank you after cutting you up

I wasn't letting you out, don't thank me!!

MummaGiles · 24/08/2020 18:26

People not indicating at mini roundabouts. Stops the whole thing from working.

PushyMeez · 24/08/2020 18:27

Ooh loads! 😆

When there are two lanes going the same way at lights or a roundabout (but it'll narrow to a single lane) and some twat sits in the right-hand one and then takes all day setting off.
Especially if they're sat next to a lorry or other slow car, so they still get in front first, but then drive 10mph under the speed limit the rest of the way. Gahh it's so annoying.

Being stuck behind a bus on a long road with loads of stops, but no chance to get round

Cars which can't position properly. Particularly when they hog more than one lane while waiting at lights or roundabouts. At busy times, it often blocks up space so fewer people can get through, and causes single file queuing traffic to form behind.

Middle lane hoggers

Tailgaters

People who dither for ages on roundabouts

Cyclists (sorry)

Failing to indicate

People who love their horn!

KeepingPlain · 24/08/2020 18:29

People who swerve into the other lane to do a left hand turn. Why do you need to do that? You're in a car! I had someone swerve into my lane as I was driving towards them so they could make a left hand turn. They were driving a hatchback! Confused So terrifying if you can't figure out how to turn.

Bananarama101 · 24/08/2020 18:32

As we're massively generalising, people who say they hate cyclists and whinge about them being insured/have numberplates/pay road tax are selfish, insecure, and terrible drivers who should just do everyone else a favour and post their licences back to the DVLA with a note explaining how they do not have the attitude or aptitude to actually possess one.

Fleamaker123 · 24/08/2020 18:35

When you wait to let someone go past, but then they end up pulling over and parking up but pretend they haven't seen you... So rude!
And drivers who don't put their hand up to say thanks if you let them through, no manners.

Blimey. Nothing like generalising the driving ability (or lack of) of those who get cheesed of with selfish thoughtless cyclists who cycle like the rest of the world needs to accommodate their swerving and weaving in and out.

OP posts:
trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/08/2020 18:38

People who drive very slowly past Stonehenge, the bottle neck from duel carriageway (coming west), onto the single carriage is bad enough without the sightseers adding to the mix.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/08/2020 18:38

Not ALL cyclists, but the ones who:

  • cycle the wrong way down one way streets
  • cycle along the middle of a road that's been narrowed to half its original size to create cycle lanes
  • no regard for other traffic because they are too busy yacking on their mobile
  • no regard for other traffic because they are too busy texting
  • jump red lights
  • can't be arsed to stop at pedestrian crossings
  • weave in and out of stationary traffic when there is no space to
  • zoom across the road in front of traffic with no indication or bothering to check if its clear
  • If no space to weave between traffic, simply divert to cycling on the pavement
  • Use pedestrian crossings to cut across traffic
  • Cycle on the pavement
  • Ignore no cycling signs
  • Race along the canal towpath superfast with no regard for pedestrians (TBF, that's not when I'm driving)
  • Dress in dark clothing and eschew any form of lighting when cycling at night

I'm sure I could think of more, but you get the idea!

Doggodogington · 24/08/2020 18:39

Oof, this is going to be cathartic!

People on the motorway who overtake one mile an hour faster than the car they are overtaking.
Middle lane hoggers
Not getting up to speed on the slip road
People in the outside lane not overtaking anyone
People not indicating at roundabouts
People who don’t say thank you when you have waited to let them through
People using mobiles
Moving lanes without indicating
Driving well under the limit in good clear conditions
Going slow, then speeding up when I go to overtake.
Cyclists riding 2 or more abreast.
People who find themselves in the wrong lane, and try and force themselves into the correct lane. Just go around the roundabout and try again ffs!!!

Aaaannnnddd I’m spent. I think.
