...to try and return this fruit?

I've been getting the same 4-pack peaches and nectarines from Waitrose since July and they've always been really nice, but the most recent ones are soft but dry and flavourless. I guess the season is coming to an end - fair enough- but they still cost £2.50 for a four pack. I put the three remaining on the side with the receipt to return the next time I shop, but partner says they'll laugh me out of the store and you take your chances with fruit.

Who's right, me or him?

I think you're right, but I couldn't be bothered so would probably just bake them in a cake and not buy again.

They won't laugh to your face

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/08/2020 10:33

Imho him. Unless they came mouldy on the outside I wouldn't return. Just cook them down into something tasty

LadyPenelope68 · 22/08/2020 10:33

Him, you can’t take it back just because it’s not as nice as normal. If you’re buying fruit out of season, that’s what you get

FourEyesGood · 22/08/2020 10:33

Waitrose are pretty good about exchanging or refunding disappoint fruit. Give it a go.

FourEyesGood · 22/08/2020 10:34

*disappointing. Speaking of which, I’m very disappointed in my phone... Grin

YesINameChangeEveryDay · 22/08/2020 10:34

He's right. Unless they are faulty in some way you really can't return them just because they don't taste very nice this time.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 22/08/2020 10:34

I can't get passed paying £2.50 for 4

Xiaoxiong · 22/08/2020 10:34

Disappointing fruit is what crumbles/pies/cakes/crisps etc etc are made for. Get baking Grin

NannyR · 22/08/2020 10:35

I think he's right.
You could try cutting them in half sprinkling with brown sugar and baking them or making them into a compote.

WisestIsShe · 22/08/2020 10:35

They'll just swap them for you. I've returned fruit before. It's expensive, why wouldn't you if it's crap?

Crylittlesister · 22/08/2020 10:35

Him. Although customer service at Waitrose is usually great, so you may well get a refund and an apology. But your DH should be right and the staff will roll their eyes once you have gone. And if they were crap before, why buy them again?? Just make a crumble with them, will be fine.

wowfudge · 22/08/2020 10:36

I'd be surprised if Waitrose didn't refund you. Their customer service is excellent.

BaconsLaw · 22/08/2020 10:36

At the height of lockdown, a woman cut in front of me at Aldi to return lemons.

They accepted them.

itchyfinger · 22/08/2020 10:37

I once saw a woman return half a courgette because that half had gone mushy, this was in Aldi. I think waitrose would deal with it and give you a refund because they're all about customer service, but personally I couldn't be bothered. Maybe stew them with a a bit of sugar and have them with yogurt?

premiumshoes · 22/08/2020 10:37

They won't 'laugh you out of the store' that's ridiculous to say. They will refund you and move on with their day. People have returned much less to the supermarket and the customer services don't give a shit

RainbowDash101 · 22/08/2020 10:39

Of course you can return the fruit. I remember once returning some fruit to marks and spencer and they replaced the fruit and gave me a refund. It’s a bit of a faff though so I don’t often bother.

SmellsLikeFeet · 22/08/2020 10:40

Do it, humour us Grin
Take a big bite out of all of them first though

lookatallthosechickens · 22/08/2020 10:42

Unfortunately our kitchen currently consists of one of those freestanding £99 jobbers from Ikea plus a microwave and hot plate (we're in the middle of a massive remodel) so no baking or compote-making at the moment.

Interesting variety of responses. I'm definitely going to try it, I'm hard to embarrass so even if they say no I'll know for next time. And for those of you surprised at £2.50 for peaches, it is pretty shocking but I love nice peaches more than almost anything so when they're in season I buy them instead of chocolate. I've tried the cheaper 'ripen at home' ones and they've never, ever turned out to be even remotely edible, even after a week ripening on the side.

Poach them in some water and honey, serve with ice cream or pancakes.

YesINameChangeEveryDay · 22/08/2020 10:45

Is it really worth the journey to the shop and back, waiting in a queue for £2.50?

CatSmith · 22/08/2020 10:48

Make a peach tart or tarte Tatum. I’d not humiliate myself by returning something unless it was bad. Flavourless fruit isn’t enough of a reason to return it in my opinion.
