...to try and return this fruit?

I've been getting the same 4-pack peaches and nectarines from Waitrose since July and they've always been really nice, but the most recent ones are soft but dry and flavourless. I guess the season is coming to an end - fair enough- but they still cost £2.50 for a four pack. I put the three remaining on the side with the receipt to return the next time I shop, but partner says they'll laugh me out of the store and you take your chances with fruit.

Who's right, me or him?

I don’t think the price is bad for what you get!
I also would never return them just because the taste wasn’t up to my expectations. I have no doubt they will refund you, their customer service is very good, I don’t even think they’d laugh at you.
I’d roll my eyes behind your back though, it’s a couple of quid, it’s coming to the end of the season, you really do take your chances with fresh produce.
I’d die of embarrassment queueing up to return 3 out of 4 peaches because of a disappointing flavour.
But crack on, you’ll get your money back!

@FreekStar - maybe I can afford to shop at Waitrose precisely because I don't waste money? I'm certainly not rich but I've got a decent nest egg and a paid-off house that I'm remodelling without a loan, and I can assure you I didn't get to this point by throwing money away. I buy nice food but I also plan and shop carefully so it's not wasted or thrown out.

I've done it at Sainsburys and they gave me the money back no problem. No one laughed.

You'll be labeled 'one of the' customers.

Only if the customer service staff are cunts. Usually nobody gives a fuck and the staff are more likely to 'label' a shitty attitude over a genuine return.

I wouldn't bother though. If you can afford to shop at Waitrose you can afford to waste £2.50.

This shows a serious lack of fundamental understanding of finances.

I honestly couldn’t be arsed for £2.50

OP wasn't asking if you could be arsed or not.

Cut them up and the birds will eat them from bird feeder.

Ring customer service. Dont wait to go back to store. You will receive a voucher

Waitrose is known for their customer service. Paying that price for peaches pretty much means they’re happy to accept them back if you find them to be sub par. I’d take them back, but would agree with the previous poster who suggested contacting them immediately rather than waiting until your next shop. If you’re on twitter, send a msg there. They’ll get back to you quickly and will likely send a voucher towards a new pack or whatever.

YANBU. You forked out for the fancy ones. Part of what you are paying for there is the reliability. The only reasons I wouldn't end up taking them back in practice are feeling awkward / not going back to the shop anyway or the knowledge they'll get chucked, whereas at home I could stew them.

I'd cook them and then not buy them again.

I’d just drop them an email to customer service and they’ll send you a gift card for the £2.50 - why shouldn’t you complain , they make promises about quality etc so perfectly within your rights to do so

I've taken fruit back to Waitrose before. They will refund and won't laugh, but you really need to take them back while they're in date, preferably today. It's hard to say fruit was bad quality on the shelf if it's a week old.

I’d expect better from Waitrose. Aldi’s fruit & veg has to be eaten within a couple of days that’s why it’s cheaper.

This is the last week for peaches and nectarines in my opinion. I never buy them past August Bank holiday for this very reason. They are going out of season, no matter what the shops try and have you think!

Yep I've done this. There's never been any awkwardness and I've used the giftcard they've sent me to offset the cost of any further shopping I get from them.

Take them back. My mum takes her fruit back all the time if it’s bad. You could also phone up customer services & they might refund you over the phone.

@mklanch too simplistic, I shop in both Asda and Waitrose, Asda's seeded black grapes (£1.70 for 700g) beats the pants out of Waitrose's grapes (£2 for 500g).

Waitrose fruit is often flavourless.

i understand the price point but everytime i get fruit from asda (online shopping) its terrible quality.
i personally like waitrose fruit although their grapes were terrible! (i brought red grapes and they were so sour)
morrisons fruit it very nice and m+s is excellent.

i love to shop and waitrose because you can pretty much guarantee most of your meat and chicken is British. in most of the other supermarkets it all comes from Thailand and is rubbish quality.

What did you do in the end @lookatallthosechickens ?

Report
Hairhelp234 · 24/08/2020 17:02

I probably would if it wasn’t going out if my way. I’ve recently taken back chicken which was open (Aldi) and a corked wine (Morrison’s) all exchanged without a quibble.

Get your peaches from the greengrocers next time. Much fresher and less than half the price.
