...to try and return this fruit?

I've been getting the same 4-pack peaches and nectarines from Waitrose since July and they've always been really nice, but the most recent ones are soft but dry and flavourless. I guess the season is coming to an end - fair enough- but they still cost £2.50 for a four pack. I put the three remaining on the side with the receipt to return the next time I shop, but partner says they'll laugh me out of the store and you take your chances with fruit.

Who's right, me or him?

I very rarely buy fruit or vegetables from Waitrose as, in my experience, they seem to stock only the most poorest quality; I've found this in several of their stores over the years.

But £2.50 for 4 peaches seem very reasonable to me.

I once took a watermelon back to Tesco. I cut into it the day after I'd bought it and it was so rotten that it hissed and bubbled when I cut it.

I was so annoyed that I got straight into my car and took it back.

They exchanged it without question, obviously, but I must admit when I realise it had only cost just over £3 I did feel a bit ridiculous for taking it back.

I certainly wouldn't be returning 3 peaches because they weren't very tasty. Peaches aren't made in a factory, they grow on trees and it's coming to the end of the season so they won't be at their best.

I've never even considered returning any food because it didn't taste as nice as I had hoped! Surprised to see so many people say they have done...

Waitrose probably will refund you as their CS is amazing.
But surely it's just a risk you take with fruit and vegetables...

You can try twitter. It works with Sainsburys. I got a refund for some blueberries that oddly tasted like dirt. I also got a refund for easy peeler oranges that were decidedly not easy to peel. At Sainsburys they've refunded me the full price in Nectar points.

I'm with you, OP. I return bad fruit/food all the time.

Recently returned a £6 chicken that went bad 3 days before BB date and hummous.

It all adds up, why should I subsidise the supermarkets, they make billions.

I would take them back. I get very annoyed about this as I have bought the expensive packs which state that they are juicy and ripe and ready etc to find they are dry and hard. They are responsible for the quality of what they sell. I am sure they will be refunded.

I don't think you'd be unreasonable. Certainly our local Waitrose (now defunct) would have regarded this as a perfectly normal thing, unless you were spitting fire about your peaches or something.

Off-topic, but every time I see the title of this thread on 'Active', I think it's about returning a borrowed stunt pineapple. Grin

I can’t believe that so many people wouldn’t be bothered returning these peaches.
Peaches and especially those that cost more than 60p each should not be dry and flavourless.
Waitrose wants you to be happy with what you buy and will refund you without any question.
I’m sure there are signs going into my local Waitrose saying just that.

Waitrose will definitely refund or exchange. I overheard a customer returning fruit to Waitrose customer service for the same reason, there was no problem at all.

I am sure waitrose will refund those.

Are they the ‘perfectly ripe’ ones? Though I thought they cost more than £2.50 for 4. If so, I agree, they have been delicious lately, reminiscent of holidaying in the south of France as a kid. We often have them wrapped in Parma ham as a pre dinner nibble.

Just chop up & drizzle with honey. And get a hobby.

Take them back. I deal with this all.the.time at another supermarket! Grin
Like others have said, you won’t believe what comes back.
Right now we are dealing with an abundance of fans and gazebos - there is nothing wrong with them... people can be dishonest.
Your fruit will get fed to the pigs!

Yanbu at all. I can't believe how many people think it's unreasonable to return food that is substandard. 2.50 for 4 is expensive - if it was £1 for 4 I wouldn't bother. Waitrose are an expensive shop selling good quality food. They don't expect to get away with selling rubbish.

Just drop them and say they came out bruised. Next time don't waste your money shopping at waitrose!

I know that with Sainsbo eg you can complain online and they will refund in credit if there is problem with an order . Is there anything similar?

@Buggedandconfused between the knitting, ceramics, gardening, and fell running I will struggle to find time for another hobby but I'll do my best if you think it's important. Any recommendations?

I probably wouldn’t bother myself but since it’s Waitrose I’d be surprised if they didn’t refund you so there’s certainly no harm in trying!

That was me you were quoting.

Tbh I couldn't tell you what peaches cost generally as I don't like them so don't buy them but £2.50 for a packets of 4 peaches doesn't actually sound a lot to me.

Obviously, I'm in the minority.

I bought strawberries from Waitrose last Summer that had obviously been far too chilled, they were like defrosted frozen berries, yuck. When I phoned the shop to tell them that they seemed to have a problem with their stock they were mortified and told me when I was next in to ask for this particular person, I was given a refund and a load more berries of all kinds, which were perfect.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 22/08/2020 13:27

I might - but live close enough to take them back straight away.
If I had to leave it a week I wouldn't bother.

Report
FreekStar · 22/08/2020 13:28

They'll give you the money back, I'm sure, as they want to maintain good customer relations. You'll be labeled 'one of the' customers. I wouldn't bother though. If you can afford to shop at Waitrose you can afford to waste £2.50. When buying fruit you can't always tell if something that looks good on the inside will be nice on the inside- I'd say it's the luck of the draw and not something I would ever return. Sellers can't really tell either. I always put it don't to experience and don't buy out of season.
