Head recommending wearing masks in school

rainyinscotland · 21/08/2020 18:05

So DC has been back at school full time for a bit (Scotland). Secondary school. All pupils in and no masks. The Headteacher has now written to parents that it's not possible to socially distance, so he/she is recommending that pupils and teachers wear masks. Recommending, not requiring.

YABU - the Head was wrong to do that.
YANBU - the Head was right to do that.
@PoppySeedSaid maybe you can tell all the HTs how to organise effective social distancing in schools with the limited space schools have, as I am sure they will be all ears.
I'm not volunteering. Made it really clear in my original post that the teacher will have to let someone who can implement social distancing do the job. Thanks for believing in my ability to do it though. It's really nice of you to think of me.

spanieleyes · 22/08/2020 11:18

My classroom is 16 sq metres. How can I get 30 children and 3 staff members in there and socially distance?

itsgettingweird · 22/08/2020 11:18

@PoppySeedSaid

The guidelines are to socially distance, not to wear a mask. If he can't figure out a way for people to socially distance at his school he needs to step down and let someone who can figure it out do the job.

Of course there is nothing stopping anyone wearing a mask at any time. It's just common sense.

You've clearly not been in a classroom for years!

2m distance between each student requires a 2m2 space each.

That's 30 odd kids and more in one room.

Each classroom would have to be the size of an average school hall.

What makes you think any HT could build that school between now and September?!

ineedaholidaynow · 22/08/2020 11:21

The point is @PoppySeedSaid very few schools can implement social distancing in classrooms if all the pupils are in. The media/Government are trying to infer that schools can with misleading photos of classrooms with desks apart, but that was when there were about 8 children in not 30+.

If parents think social distancing will happen in schools they will be very disappointed.

hedgehogger1 · 22/08/2020 11:37

@PoppySeedSaid do you want every single member of school staff to resign? The guidance to social distance is impossible in schools, so according to the guidance there should then be other measures in place.

TeenTraumaTrials · 22/08/2020 11:54

We have had very similar message from head at DCs secondary school. They are 'encouraging' pupils to wear masks. I am not keen on masks in class but see value of wearing them in the corridors and social spaces. But DCs don't want to be the only ones wearing them (as very very few are) and get the attention that would bring. If it becomes mandatory in class I would not be happy but would make it clear to DCs they need to comply. I can see that coming.

velocitykate · 22/08/2020 11:58

Gosh, where did you get your doctorate from? I also live in Wales and in my view the lower rate is largely down to the lower population density. Please don't spread your understanding as fact - there is as much research to say that children do, in fact, carry and transmit larger viral loads.

Not along the Cardiff/Swansea M4 corridor and the Rhondda valley. Scotland also have a low population density, but their case numbers aren't coming down. There will be many reasons for this and I did say I didn't know what the right answer is. I don't think anyone does

PoppySeedSaid · 22/08/2020 11:59

You would be better off asking questions instead of making assumptions. It will help you understand how others can come up with solutions to problems when you can't.

If I wanted that I would have said that in my original post.

spanieleyes · 22/08/2020 12:01

So, how do I Social distance in my classroom then?

ineedaholidaynow · 22/08/2020 12:02

I asked whether you had ideas @PoppySeedSaid

Parker231 · 22/08/2020 12:05

Friends and family in the US - back at school with compulsory masks from kindergarten upwards. Everyone has to provide their own washable masks.

PoppySeedSaid · 22/08/2020 12:14

And I'm truly flattered. Thank you 🙏
spanieleyes · 22/08/2020 12:19

I guess that's a No then🤔

lifeafter50 · 22/08/2020 12:23

Guidance on my school is that SD will not be policed at break and lunchtimes (would be impossible -require staff to be monitoring permanently with no break) and counterproductive to children having normal social interaction.
Lots of extra hand washing stations set up on the grounds and sanitiser in all classrooms
Staggered lunchtimes with cleaning between sittings.
School toilets cleaned three times a day.
Pupils and teachers are permitted to wear a mask if they want to.
One way systems in corridors (which would a sensible option on a permanent oasis to reduce congestion).
As a teacher I am happy with that -O god think the school would take a pragmatic approach that would be achievable rather than a nonsense Stasi approach

What's your solution to social distancing in a classroom not big enough.

Beyond the HT resigning which doesn't create space.

*What's your solution to social distancing in a classroom not big enough.

Apologies if my original post wasn't clear.

The point I was making was they allow someone who can problem solve and find solutions to come in.

Obviously if they just resign and the person that replaces them can only only see barriers to a solution, then that won't solve anything.

There ISN'T a solution, it doesn't matter how many Heads you bring in, they will all find the same situation. If there was one, do you not think all the Heads across the country would have come up with it by now? You cannot Social distance in a school.

You cannot Social distance in a school.

The staff can social distance - the outbreak at the school in Derby at the beginning of June involved 7 members of staff - teaching staff and admin staff but not pupils.

echt · 22/08/2020 13:12

Not at all. MN have deleted a post that attacked arguments, not the person. They have not followed their own guidelines. Look them up.

Yes, I'm sure it's MN that's wrong, not you.

Are you seriously gaslighting and suggesting that you are the victim?
