The Secret

AIBU to give “the secret” any thought?

I toyed with it years ago. Asked “the universe” for a £10 note. Walking through York the night after, found a wet soggy £10 note on the floor in a graveyard.

Played with it again a few weeks later. Asked the universe for a red balloon. Immediately afterwards I put YouTube on to listen to some music and the first recommended video was a song called something like “10 red balloons”. I’d never heard of the song before.

When I was a child, before I knew of “the secret” we were moving house and I desperately wanted a garden with steps in it. That would have been highly unusual in this area but I kept on thinking about it obsessively. The house we moved to had steps in the garden (the only house in the whole street that did).

My friend goes on about the secret all the time, I put all my “successes” down to coincidence as the alternative sounds batshit but some people truly believe it works, intelligent people!!

I watched the movie yesterday and I’ve decided I want £50k in my bank by New Year’s Eve 😂 ironically DH said to me this morning “we have nearly x amount in bank! The most we’ve ever had!” (Nowhere near £50k) ... maybe it’s already working lol

This is of course lighthearted but I’d be interested to hear other people’s experiences of it?! Please don’t turn it into a “you’re a fucking imbecile OP” type thread, it’s just for fun.

This thread has totally split planet Mumsnet, I remember Jim Carey talking about all this and how it put it down to his success.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 23/08/2020 17:02

@Clipclop10 you see that’s what I’m worried about -What I can see as is the original source work for “the secret”
Would never lead to such thoughts, this seems to be some half arsed self help book with a bit of woo thrown in without telling the full picture or the context these principles are , shall we say heavily inspired by. As such I would agree and see it as dangerous. I’m going to have a read.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 23/08/2020 19:11

@YouokHun it’s really really interesting that you mention Carl Jung in this context. In his letter to Rudolf Bernoulli of 5 October 1944 (Carl Jung Letters vol 1page 351) he writes:

“Fortunately I can go on with my work and am at present engrossed in the secret of the Chymical Wedding [The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz was the purported -although sometimes dismissed - third Rosicrucian manifesto for those unfamiliar with the title]....Hermeticism is not something you chose,it is a destiny.”

Jung was well known for his esoteric beliefs, especially Hermeticism. It is therefore unsurprising that similar themes crop up in his work and Hermetic philosphopy -which it basically seems The Secret is based on (although it appears rather dangerously, from what I have read so far, to only Capture a one sided, out of context snippet of a philosophy which should be read and understood both spiritually and historically as a whole).

I’m really grateful this thread appeared, I was thinking earlier today about something new to research and think about... maybe there’s something in this after all😁.

TrufflePioneer · 23/08/2020 20:06

Entirely due to this thread I started googling "The Secret", and then "Derren Brown" (who I love).

I didn't really know anything about cosmic ordering but I like to keep an open mind. Read a bit about it, along with LOA, and thought huh. Bollocks.

Then I downloaded Derren's audio book "Happy", which talks about The Secret in the second chapter. Debunks it entirely.

Sometimes when I have done something, like had a go on Tombola, almost the world slows down as I pick the ticket and I know it will be a winner

But the real mystery is, why does the universe want you to win some old shit that’s been donated to the Tombola?

serenada · 24/08/2020 01:20

@Lifeisgenerallyfun

When you have completed your research can you explain it to the rest of us??!! Because I struggled with just that bit🤣

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 24/08/2020 07:05

@serenada -which bit?

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/08/2020 12:17

I also get the feeling where the world slows down at pivotal moments in my life, no matter how innocuous the moment seems to be.

Re Jim Carey and MitziKs exh

I think there are 2 different things going on.

MitziKs ex convinced himself that he would get the job so just expected it to fall in his lap no matter how much of a jerk he was.

Whilst Jim Carey convinced that he would be a star then probably helped himself by talking to the right people, putting himself out there, not giving up and working hard to put himself in the limelight for what he thought would come.

Like the poster who wants £50,000 in her bank account by Christmas. It has given her drive to save harder and cut down on outgoings.

It might be BS but what harm can it do if you use it correctly.

If MitziKs ex had gone into the interview with the mindset of showing the interviewee how perfect he was for the job he would have probably got the job

It is about mindset and how you talk to people and if The Secret or Cosmic Ordering helps to change your mindset and focus you on what you want then it can’t do any harm if used with the knowledge that it is just one tool and nothing is going to fall in your lap if you don’t do anything or you piss people who could help off.
It isn’t going to give you a lottery win or pluck you from dangerous or life threatening situations but it might help you concentrate on what you do want

Kljnmw3459 · 24/08/2020 12:20

It's a version of "work towards your goal".

Jellybeansincognito · 24/08/2020 14:19

What about crystals?

They’re becoming a celeb trend.

Because obviously your life’s success and happiness are all because of the ‘awfully mined’ fake crystal in your pocket rather than your attitude and life choices...

notsodimwit · 29/08/2020 02:47

Since reading this thread I have been reading up about it.. Has is worked for anyone on here?

nandaandm · 29/08/2020 02:53

I have a lot of Friends who live by this, I'm a bit sceptical. I think if there's something that you want so much in your life then you work toward it, be it a new car (doing overtime) more time with family (adjust your current lifestyle) etc. That's not the universe, that's you adjusting.

acatcalledjohn · 29/08/2020 12:08

If correlation is causation then yes, but we all know that they are very different things.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 29/08/2020 16:23

@notsodimwit -I have been practicing the Rosicrucian visualisation technique that the book seems to be based on for years but using it as an acceptance of a much wider hermetic philosophy and it’s worked for me.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 29/08/2020 16:34

Although when o say worked I don’t mean in a birthday wish kind of way, it worked in altering my mindset and the things I achieved out of life.

everybodysang · 29/08/2020 16:47

I think it's an absolute pile of shite for naive plonkers.

But I guess as long as you're not doing anyone else any harm it doesn't hurt. Just know that when you bang on about it (I have a couple of acquaintances who are into it) you sound like an absolute fool.

Hadjab · 29/08/2020 17:20

Got totally obsessed by The Greatest Showman, ended up going to several screenings. Got sent a link to free tickets for a showing on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Leicester Square. My equally obsessed BFF and I decided this would be our last showing. Sitting in the cinema, I turned to her and said “Wouldn’t it be funny if Hugh Jackman turned up? Fingers crossed”

Five minutes later, Hugh Jackman was announced as the VIP guest! He’d stopped by in the way to the GQ Awards to say a special thank for making the movie a success.

coffeerice · 29/08/2020 17:30

Never read the book but I have always set goals for mine and my family's life. Honestly, we have achieved them all. Nothing out of this world but things like living by the sea and having a pool, being financially secure, success, happiness.
My DB recently said that I'd always had delusions of grandeur and my reply was that they weren't delusional.
I believe in positivity breeding positivity.

imissthesouth · 29/08/2020 18:56

@everybodysang
you sound very miserable
All law of attraction really is, is setting goals🤷🏻‍♀️

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/08/2020 19:16

So if this stuff is true (it's not) I caused coronavirus.

I was tired and fed up at work and wished there was some way I could have an extended period off work and still get paid. Along came coronavirus and I was furloughed for four months.

Sorry about that everyone.

imissthesouth · 29/08/2020 19:53

Maybe you did lol

Newbie1999 · 29/08/2020 20:00

Is the idea that if you keep thinking, for example, ‘I want to buy a house’, that all smaller decisions will lead to this eventually, ie spending less and saving a deposit quicker because it’s constantly on your mind?

Itsnotalwaysme · 29/08/2020 20:03

I spent the past 2 days obsessing over the clothes I used to have and wondered why I binned them. Fiance takes down some suitcases from the attic looking for something unrelated and low and behold here is all my old clothes!

imissthesouth · 29/08/2020 20:21

sort of @Newbie1999
basically say i wanted a new car.
Visualising my new car and acting as if i already had it helps me work towards my goal. This could be saving more money and looking around for a better time
