To find sneezing *really* annoying

Brandyb · 21/08/2020 00:50

Whenever anyone sneezes, I have to suppress a shudder of irritation. Quite a visceral one. Maybe it's because my OH has allergies and occasional explosive sneezing fits. Also highly allergic to by mother's indecorous sneezing at quiet moments in theatres (how I miss that now). Maybe in both cases it's the momentary loss of control.

Does anyone else suffer this or other irrational and unreasonable intolerances that make you feel bad about yourself?

PS despite all appearances I'm actually a fun and tolerant person. It's mainly just the sneezing. Will get worse with second wave

PPS YANBU voting means you think I'm not being unreasonable about hating sneezing

I think it depends, there are some sneezes which feels like people have really leaned into it and are doing it to attract attention (loud, elongated ACCHOOOOO types), which isn’t on the same annoyance level as someone quietly sneezing into a tissue (for me anyway). You can’t help the way you feel but people on the whole can’t control sneezes! Are there any other noises which provoke the same strong reaction?

Smallsteps88 · 21/08/2020 01:01

Sneezes can be quite a forcefully intrusive thing. I’m sure most sneezers don’t intend them to be (although some seem to really enjoy their loud sneezing) but the nature of them makes them so. Personally I hate having to sneeze and have learned to suppress them pretty much all the time unless I get dust in my face or something. I do hate hearing others sneeze to and often think “oh bloody well just hold it in.” I know that’s ridiculous and my own issue though.

I hate whistling but I don’t think that’s an unreasonable intolerance and don’t feel bad about it. Grin I never tell people though because then they whistle deliberately to annoy me.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/08/2020 01:03

Yes sneezing is annoying, hate it when i sneeze loads.

Its a natural thing to do, just like farting its hard to keep both in lol

ShyTown · 21/08/2020 01:16

I once knew an utter twat someone who always shouted a fake high pitched ‘atchooooo’ after she sneezed. Now that’s annoying.

Deadringer · 21/08/2020 01:19

Yes stupid bastards sneezing, they should learn to control themselves.

isabellerossignol · 21/08/2020 01:21

Yes, I'm the same. I know it's irrational, I know it's not the sneezer's fault, no one chooses to have allergies or a cold. In my defence, I annoy myself when I sneeze too. It's just a noise that is like fingers on a blackboard to me. And I'd never ever say anything to the sneezer, or shudder or roll my eyes.

Maybe I have low tolerance because my daughter has allergies but refuses to take antihistamines...

AlwaysLatte · 21/08/2020 01:21

I usually do it with my mouth closed so it's just a quiet'n' sound. But my husband A-CHOOs like he's auditioning for a part in a Wagnerian opera. No bloody need for that, and he doesn't get a 'Bless you' from me!

FuckwitMcGee · 21/08/2020 01:24

I have inherited The Family Sneeze, it has passed through many generations of my ancestors.

We don't all have delicate little sneezes like tiny kittens.

YABVVVVVVU!

Micsam89 · 21/08/2020 03:17

Sneezes, yawning and loud chewing make me want to commit murder.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 21/08/2020 03:21

@Brandyb, it's called missaphonia and its definitely a thing. Mine is saliva noises when speaking. I stop watching shows, films or even interviews on the news because I want to lob something at the screen.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/08/2020 03:35

Dh has reactive rhinitis which is triggered by temperature changes. So in winter when he goes downstairs in the morning, where it tends to be colder than upstairs, he will have a sneezing fit of maybe 20 sneezes.

I know I should feel sympathetic but it makes my hackles rise. He doesnt do loud sneezing - I probably sneeze more loudly than he does - but it's the length of time it takes, and just when you think he's finished he sneezes again.

DancingCatGif · 21/08/2020 03:47

normal sneeze, fine. Deliberate loud "achoooooooooOoooOOOOoo" sneezing, no.

BlackLetterDay · 21/08/2020 04:01

Loud performative anything does my fucking nut in. Once had a friend who did ostentatious drinking, I mean seriously wtf.

Terrace58 · 21/08/2020 04:06

As long as you don’t run over and bite the sneezer, I think you are ok. Since you are a human and not my cat, Who will come from another floor of the house to attack me if I sneeze, I am guessing the sneezers are safe

Catsup · 21/08/2020 04:38

I'm an unfortunately loud chewer. Everyone hates me! 😔 The combination of my naturally 'clicky jaw', and clear over enthusiasm to attack food is well commented on by friends, family, and colleagues... I'm 'that person' everyone looks really pleased about if I offer to slope off to the sofa with my plate of food if there's not enough seats at the dining table. I also scrape my knife on my plate 😳

upsidedownwavylegs · 21/08/2020 06:25

*I also scrape my knife on my plate

I’d scrape mine on your cheek after the first time.

DancingCatGif · 21/08/2020 06:39

"I also scrape my knife on my plate"

My entire body cringed at that

blubberball · 21/08/2020 06:46

My dad sneezes so loud, the house shakes, and the entire street hears.

I try to suppress when possible, shut my mouth and close my eyes so that it feels like my ears will explode.

Occasionally, one of my sneezes will get out of control, if it catches me by surprise. Then my bf says from another room "What did you say?"..... Nothing... It was just a sneeze that got out of hand.

Potterpotterpotter · 21/08/2020 06:48

Yanbu - my partner has sneezing fits and it really winds me up

TriciaMcMillan · 21/08/2020 06:51

DH has inherited his mother's propensity for protracted sneezing fits. The first one is fine, but each subsequent sneeze irritates me exponentially. The delay between them becomes ever longer but, just when you think it's finished, he goes again. It's so loud, it's physically intrusive, the whole sofa shakes and my ears ring.

In most other ways he is a delight, but this is a significant genetic flaw. I can only hope and pray that he hasn't passed it on to the children....

pussycatinboots · 21/08/2020 06:59

YABU
I start small and work up to a crescendo when I sneeze. It's "quite entertaining" watching me lose control, unable to speak or see for a few minutes, apparently Hmm
I don't ask to sneeze - it just happens - you can't hold the bastard things in.

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2020 07:01

Misophonia.
I have it about sneezing too and feel absolute rage.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 21/08/2020 07:04

YANBU. I have sneezing fits (no idea why) and I annoy myself. 😂

LunaLula83 · 21/08/2020 07:04

I love a good sneeze!
