To find sneezing *really* annoying

Brandyb · 21/08/2020 00:50

Whenever anyone sneezes, I have to suppress a shudder of irritation. Quite a visceral one. Maybe it's because my OH has allergies and occasional explosive sneezing fits. Also highly allergic to by mother's indecorous sneezing at quiet moments in theatres (how I miss that now). Maybe in both cases it's the momentary loss of control.

Does anyone else suffer this or other irrational and unreasonable intolerances that make you feel bad about yourself?

PS despite all appearances I'm actually a fun and tolerant person. It's mainly just the sneezing. Will get worse with second wave

PPS YANBU voting means you think I'm not being unreasonable about hating sneezing

Me me me!!!! I'm so intolerant of it but do try and hide it for the first three sneezes, any more than that then I can't hide my irritation. I find hiccuping intensely annoying though, it really annoys me, even when it is DC doing it Blush

Arsewell · 21/08/2020 08:09

Yep - my son has recently begun scream-sneezing, deliberately being loud because it's satisfying. My husband's sneezing fits are annoying too but he has allergies.

I can just about live with these. What I fucking hate are little girly cutesy sneezes. My former colleague made a little tiny mouse squeak when she sneezed, but followed it up with a fucking unbearable "eh-cheeeeewwwww" noise. It sounded so fake and like she was trying to be cute. Aarrrgghhh!

Taylrse · 21/08/2020 08:44

It depends. I also hate when people do those extremely load attention seeking sneezes!

I understand sometimes they just come out like that, but I find I'm able to kind of suppress and quieten my sneezes so feel like other people must be able to as well.

I do love a good old sneeze sesh though, feels so satisfying Grin

MilkRunningOutAgain · 21/08/2020 08:51

I sneeze loudly and with no warning, I can’t hold it in. I sneeze much more in a dusty room and much less outside in the fresh air, so it’s probably caused by dust. I’ve been like this for decades, I’m now in my 50s. So that’s another way I irritate others. What a depressing thread.

PablosHoney · 21/08/2020 10:55

I hate all repetitive noises, tapping, banging, sniffing, footsteps, rustling, chewing, whistling etc, I feel the rage on a visceral level, I know it’s unreasonable but wish to god I didn’t feel it.

SerenDippitty · 21/08/2020 11:04

@BlackLetterDay

Loud performative anything does my fucking nut in. Once had a friend who did ostentatious drinking, I mean seriously wtf.
You mean loud slurping or gulping followed by a satisfied sigh? That's disgusting.

I'm quite a loud sneezer. But I prefer proper sneezes to little cutesy ones.

honeylulu · 21/08/2020 11:15

I feel like this about hiccups. They make me feel murderously angry. If my kids get them and I have to go out of the room. If I get them myself I feel like slapping my own face. I can't really explain why.

I don't feel the same about sneezing but performance sneezing does annoy me. My husband screams when he sneezes and if I'm not expecting it sometimes I nearly piss myself in fright. One time I ended up throwing a tray of drinks in momentary terror. He claims normal sneezes "aren't satisying".

I find belching and farting hilarious though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/08/2020 11:21

It only irritates me when people yell loudly at the same time.

Yes, dh, I’m looking at you - yes, you can help it - just don’t shout your head off every time!

Why do some people feel the need to ‘voice’ a sneeze?

Was it attention seeking when they were kids, and nobody ever said, ‘Do that again and I’ll wallop you into next week!’

Menora · 21/08/2020 11:24

This has come up here so many times on MN about people who sneeze too loud and every time people are told you can’t actually control a sneeze, you can’t hold them in and some magical staring at the light - it is involuntary and I don’t want burst ear drums in the process

Sorry you find it so annoying, I think that is stressful for the poor person sneezing to feel so bad and awkward about an involuntary reaction though

queenMab99 · 21/08/2020 11:25

I love sneezing! (Takes another pinch of snuff)Grin

AramintaLee · 21/08/2020 12:01

When someone sneezes so loudly it actually makes my ears ring... that annoys me.

What annoys me most is... people hiccuping. I know it can't be helped but I honestly feel uncontrollable rage when someone hiccups. I rage at my own hiccups too but am effective at holding my breath to get rid of them.

Noneformethanks · 21/08/2020 12:04

Hiccups. Actually had to leave the room last night I couldn’t cope with dd.

ClaraJude · 21/08/2020 12:24

I get unreasonably irritated by sneezes too - especially my husband’s, because he sneezes SO LOUDLY. I think it’s because they give you a fright and have no warning.

I’m aware this is very unreasonable of me so I don’t vocalise the rage, but you have my sympathy!

Magicpaintbrush · 21/08/2020 12:30

I have allergies and have many multiple-sneeze sneezing episodes daily, it fucks me right off because it comes out of nowhere, forces me to stop whatever I am busy doing, and happens regardless of how much anti allergy medication I take - has been thus, every single day, for 25 years. And if I detected that my sneezing was irritating others in my household then let me tell you it would go down like a cup of cold sick and they would soon know about it. Believe me, it is more irritating for the person with the allergy than anybody else.

sugarbum · 21/08/2020 14:21

My DH accused me of sneezing exaggeratedly the other day. It shocked him and apparently I should have 'kept it quiet'. I'm slightly staggered by the suggestion that I did it on purpose!

Brandyb · 21/08/2020 15:21

@LunaLula83 yes, I also love a good sneeze (I don't voice it tho!)

Allergy-wise, I agree it's probably more annoying for the sneezer than the sneezee.

Therefore I must admit I am being unreasonable but I feel so validated by those who have sneaked in on my side

That's the thing

Not sure what I meant by that's the thing

and clear over enthusiasm to attack food is well commented on by friends, family, and colleagues... I'm 'that person' everyone looks really pleased about if I offer to slope off to the sofa with my plate of food if there's not enough seats at the dining table. I also scrape my knife on my plate

Eww. Learn some manners.

Badhairday101 · 21/08/2020 17:40

I feel this way about coughing, the sound of it gives me the rage. It's nothing to do with germs that doesn't bother me, just the noise of it. I have to move away from people when they start or if it's my children I actually say stop coughing like they have any control over it 😂.
