To have forgotten who I insured my car with?

Eastie77 · 20/08/2020 19:03

Whenever I renew my car insurance I usually print out a copy of the documents and keep them in my glove compartment. This year when I renewed (January) I forgot to do this. Earlier today I had to give details of my car insurer when filling out some paperwork and I couldn't remember who I'd insured with. Literally drew a complete blank. I usually change provider each year or so as I use a comparison site to get the best deal. Last year it was Aviva but I changed this year and couldn't recall who I switched to. I eventually found it after trawling through my e-mails for a while.

Mentioned this to a friend and she said she found it "absolutely unbelievable" that I couldn't remember such an important piece of information and asked if I was stressed or taking medication/drugs as this kind of forgetfulness is very worryingConfused.

Am I alone in thinking this is a slight over-reaction. It's not as if I forgot the names of my DC or my birthday?!

If you change insurer regularly, then I don’t see the big deal. I had to think twice reading your thread, and I only probably know because I see the DD come out of my bank each month.

Nosleeptilteenagers · 20/08/2020 19:09

I trawl through my emails to find this information every year!
Same with buildings and contents!

If you change every year and know when your renewal is due then what’s the problem? I can always dig out the email if I want to make a claim.

cathcath2 · 20/08/2020 19:11

Hahaha - I change provider for everything and often can't remember who I am with. That is what emails are for!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 20/08/2020 19:12

I'm not sure how you forgot tbh but I don't think its a big deal. Its just one of those 'brain like a sieve' moments, everyone has them.

CodenameVillanelle · 20/08/2020 19:12

I put my important emails like that into a folder and forget about them so if I ever need them I can find them. I don't remember things like that unless I have to!

mineofuselessinformation · 20/08/2020 19:13

Bank statement?

PleasantVille · 20/08/2020 19:13

Hardly a big issue in the scheme of anything, as long as you kind find any piece of information when you need it you don't get extra points for being able to remember it

This will absolutely astound her

Tell her not to be so silly

NurseButtercup · 20/08/2020 19:14

I do the same as you, change every year and always forget who I'm with.

Gingerfish91 · 20/08/2020 19:15

I di t think it’s unbelievable. We insured one car twice once. I’ve also taxed a van we didn’t own for over a year because my husband has loads of white vans and the new owner didn’t send off his part of the form and DVLA said they never received our part. When you have quite a few cars and loads of insurance policies for all sorts of things its easy to forget!

Fishyfinger · 20/08/2020 19:15

Of course it's not weird to forget.

If you think how many different policies we all have to deal with it's no surprise. There's car insurances, house contents and building, extra boiler cover, appliance cover, life insurances, health insurance for some, travel, pets etc. Then you have a choice of utility companies, Internet providers, TV, mobile phones..

All these have log in and password details to remember (no chance).

Eastie77 · 20/08/2020 19:20

Gingerfish - my friend and her DH both took out house insurance for a couple of years without realising.

I actually rang the wrong one once to update my policy, completely forgetting I had changed 🙄

Would always have to think twice and dig out the email, especially if I've been able to pay the year upfront

TheClitterati · 20/08/2020 19:23

I'm a regular changer and forget also. I use a journal/Diary so I note the vitals in there. Documents I save to google drive.

namechangetheworld · 20/08/2020 19:25

I forget every single year and usually have to trawl through hundreds of emails to find out. Ditto home insurance.

I worked in the insurance industry for years and we regularly had calls from people to check whether they had a policy with us. Your friend is weird.

pigsDOfly · 20/08/2020 19:28

Just trying to think about the information that is on your insurance documents OP and what it could potentially flag up for someone if they stole your car and found your information in the glove compartment.

Possibly not the safest place to keep it.

mrsed1987 · 20/08/2020 19:33

I did the same. I had to look back to my bank statement and then ring them up and ask to send again

Freshfaced · 20/08/2020 19:34

I had to check my bank account recently to see where the payments were going.....
I change yearly. Docs are electronic. Not remembering is perfectly normal

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 20/08/2020 19:40

I thought I was the only one who does this.
I started adding the confirmation email to a folder one for house ins and one for car ins. It's the only way I can keep track. But I have no clue who I have without looking.

PleasantVille · 20/08/2020 19:40

Why don't you use the email search function, you don't have hundreds of emails that mention car insurance do you?Confused
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 20/08/2020 19:43

search your emails or check your bank/credit card.
I don;t change mine often - I just check the lowest price online, call them and say its only £X on line and they discount by a few hundred ££ to price match.

Nosleeptilteenagers · 20/08/2020 19:46

@PleasantVille If you’ve ever used a price comparison site to find an insurer, or several price comparison sites then yes, you do get hundreds of emails than mention car insurance!

user1493413286 · 20/08/2020 19:47

I forget who I’m insured with as I change each year so it just doesn’t stick in my head and I have to check through my emails

Gillian1980 · 20/08/2020 19:50

I change every year and can’t remember easily. Also sometimes it’s cheaper for each car to be with a different insurer which is additionally hard to remember.
I don’t think it’s weird at all.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 20/08/2020 19:56

It's the gas and electricity suppliers I can never remember. It's one of dh's jobs and he loves reviewing them Hmm and tells me in great detail about the savings we are making. I nod and smile and when the people come door to door trying to sell us a different package I tell them we've just moved to their company, thanks very much and goodbye.

Margie70 · 20/08/2020 20:02

My partner and I have separately paid insurance on our washer dryer for 5 years! It would have paid for a new machine!
